I thought it was decided on a few of those unsure ones. The deer I think is meant to be All that Heaven Allows. Then the band is Il Sorpasso.

Red tie man has been nothing though.

It certainly makes sense.

It is about that time for more Chaplin since they haven't released any this year, so it's possible one could be part of the announcement. They'll release one at some point before the end of the year for sure at the very least.

I was watching The Great Dictator yesterday and it got me thinking that I would love for Criterion to release the rest of his features on blu. There's only

A Countess from Hong Kong
A King in New York
Limelight
The Circus
A Woman of Paris: A Drama of Fate (not starring in)
The Kid

left plus some other shorts that I haven't heard announced to be released. I think all of the Criterion releases plus the upcoming Flicker Alley collection will go excellent together.

The first three on the list would make a great "Late Chaplin Boxset."

I haven't watched my copy yet, but it's next on my list of the Chaplin Criterions. Really looking forward to it after watching my copies of Modern Times and The Gold Rush.

They release one Chaplin film a year, so it's just a matter of what month and which film.

A Countess from Hong Kong is not part of the Chaplin Estate titles (owned by Universal I believe), so they'd have to arrange a different licensing deal to release it.

Actually, they released two last year: Monsieur Verdoux and City Lights.

Just got back from seeing the new Jarmusch movie Only Lovers Left Alive.

I can honestly say its the greatest modern vampire movie I've ever seen. I think it would be a perfect fit in the Criterion Collection.

This film was just brilliant on all levels, from the setting to the characters and story. I loved the whole blend of Detroit rock music with old English literature and vampire history. I'm starting to wonder if Jarmusch himself is a vampire now. I wouldn't be surprised.

I'm really looking forward to see it. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

While we're on the subject of Jarmusch, I would be A-OK with Criterion releasing both Broken Flowers and Ghost Dog.

I rarely recommend blind buys, but if you can play Region-B discs make sure you add Claire Denis' latest film to your collections. Don't read reviews. I would also suggest that you do not watch any trailers, though we have one on the site. Just buy it and see it. It has to be on Blu-ray because the soundtrack is just as impressive. (Pure atmosphere...The Thindersticks).

David Lynch would have loved to direct Bastards. The year's best film

Our review will be up shortly.

I'll be sure to completely ignore your review of the film itself until I've seen it and just focus on reading the V/A/E sections I think I recall reading an interview with Nicolas Winding Refn and he mentioned talking to her about her film Bastards.

This was at a festival premiere for her film and his Only God Forgives. She jokingly said his film is too ponderous and he jokingly criticised her film. Clearly they both liked each other's work though from what I remember.

I was wondering what your opinion of Refn's work so far is, Pro-B?

Also really looking forward to reading your review for Life Aquatic.

After closer examination, the man is wearing a red shirt, not a red tie.

There is a 1952 film called Red Shirts by Francesco Rosi. Maybe?

I watched it sometime last year via On Demand and I thought it was a pretty decent movie. It definitely has some really disturbing and sick moments throughout it.

It was my first Denis film, but I still have White Material to watch via Criterion.

Might the band be Bertand Tavernier's Round Midnight? Or is that too obvious? Would also love to see a Coup de Torchon blu.

TJS or anyone else - do you have a link to a post that talks about this? Someone else once commented about upgrades being handled in spine # order. I looked at the list and while a lot of the early spine #s have been released, I don't think that it is necessarily true.

I would imagine that the amount of work required to clean up some of the prints would be taken into consideration when determining the order for future releases.

On the topic of Kurosawa films that have not been upgraded. I am about 60% through Stray Dog. Got sleepy last night, so will have to finish it today. So far, however, it is a VERY entertaining movie. It is easy to see how Kurosawa was an influence on a lot of modern cinema. Looking forward to finishing it this afternoon.

My bad. I forgot about Monsieur Verdoux since I never picked it up. It's the only one of his that I'm not sure I'd want to watch more than once.
