Hey Scottie

I own the OOP 2DVD set, from NoShame Films U.S. Wonderful release, and very good film of course. NoShame Films also used the original poster as cover art for this release. (I took two pictures for you to see the poster). I own everything from Michelangelo Antonioni that has been released on DVD (and Blu-ray).

By the way, there is a good short (though not everyone likes it) in the Eros collection. If you have not seen it, you should:

But I am really looking forward to the "acid" westerns by Monte Hellman. After watching Two-Lane Blacktop about a year ago (one of Warren Oates greatest movies), it sparked a great interest in this director. Now we get two westerns by him starring with no other than JACK NICHOLSON.
I watched it one afternoon on my computer via Hulu and I really enjoyed it. I can't even imagine how great it is going to look on Blu-ray.

The covers are actually slightly different. The left image is the original DVD release and the right one is the new Blu-ray release. I much prefer the left, as it does not look as animated. Still, I think both covers give off an alienated mood.

Speaking of Monte Hellman, I plan on watching his two westerns via Amazon Instant Video prior to purchasing the films. I just watched Two-Lane Blacktop a few weeks ago and while it certainly wasn't a bad film, I just found myself not very enthused with it as a whole. I think a lot of it has to do with my lack of interest in road movies (aside from Y Tu Mamá También). Warren Oates certainly did a great job (my favorite film of his is Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia) and I really enjoyed the ending scene with the slow-motion burn. I'm curious how these westerns are going to be.

Thanks so much, Pro-B. I'll definitely check out "Story of a Love Affair" and I'll try my best to track down that short in the Eros collection.

By the way, I just noticed that both "Story of a Love Affair" and "Il Grido" are available on Amazon Instant Video. I know what I'm adding to my watchlist.

It gets a little syrupy towards the end buy it's more of a snappy romantic comedy, with some great chemistry between the stars.

I love Il Grido! That and Blow-Up are by far my favorite Antonioni films. Will rewatch L'avventura, La Notte, and L'eclisse again soon tho.

Amazing month of new Criterion releases.

A Frank Capra film! Antonioni! Pollack! Hellman! Les Blank!

I'm rendered speechless still.

I'm here in NYC for a few days and I've hardly had time to go on the internet and now finally at 2 AM I find out the new releases for November! A great way to cap off a long day in the big apple.

Tootsie is most likely not something Criterion had a look at to "try and go a bit outside what they usually do" but more probably the pass in the deal with Sony to get other titles much more within Criterion usual lineups.
Also, like other very well known titles, it will certainly bring Criterion tons of movie than will help them to get the titles within their usual lineups (think Ben Button).

It seems to me it shows in the specs since it will mostly only be old extras being ported.

Finally, Last days of Disco has certainly nothing close to Tootsie in terms of wide appeal.

Unrelated, the Hellman is cover is fugly as hell and the Les Blank box RSP at $125 ?!

There are a number of films that were released on Eclipse that have HD transfers available that I could see (and def hope) being released as part of the Criterion Collection proper. For whatever that's worth.
If they can release Killer's Kiss and Stereo on Blu-ray, I guess there's some hope for the Eclipse label. The Martin Scorsese World Cinema Project sets are pretty much the same idea as that behind the Eclipse sets.

I am surprised at how many hipsters are griping about Tootsie on the Facebook page.... some of us actually are huge fans of that movie and have waited patiently for years for this to come out on blu-ray, assuming the best we'd get would be a Twilight Time version with no new extras.

God forbid Criterion releases a movie that the general public actually knows of.

Anyone notice that many Criterions on the B&N website are $29 right now. With the 10% member discount plus the 20% coupon that expires Sunday it comes out to just under $21. It's not a bad deal if you don't want to wait for the November sale.

You do not get the 10% members when you order from the website. Instead you get free shipping.

I've not seen any Antonioni - I am quite likely to pick up at least one of his films in the near future. Not sure which will be first up though. L'avventura a very likely purchase anyway.

It Happened One Night is exciting! I'll get that for sure.

I'm very interested in the Hellman westerns.

Tootsie is one of my wife's least favourite movies ever, so that's a pass (I've never seen it)

And Les Blank doesn't interest me at all. Looks like a great set for those that are interested though.

Not saying they wouldn't be worth it! There's a lot on the By Brakhage set (obviously shorter pieces) but that's a substantially lower price point.

Disappointing to hear that Les Blank's 'Werner Herzog Eats his Shoe' (1980) is not included in the set.

That's something everyone wants to see in HD.
