That answer fits the drawing much better than Moonrise Kingdom, which people are just saying because they already know it's on the way. The drawing doesn't show a kingdom, it shows a city.

Night and the City is coming!

Interesting how many of these are being figured out late in the day here. When I saw the cartoon this morning, I thought some of the drawings were too nondescript to figure out. Good work cartoon sleuths!

This most certainly isn't what it is, but the two driving toward a road that ends… Thelma & Louise? Sorry, that's all I've got.

Secondly, Michael Bay didn't have "a Criterion clause in his contract". Yes, he twisted Disney's arm into letting Criterion do two of his films, but that certainly wasn't in his contract.

Thirdly, Michael Bay wasn't the only director to get Disney to license a title to Criterion. As I mentioned before, there's Kevin Smith's Chasing Amy (on LD and DVD). There are also (on LD) Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, Alan Parker's Evita, the Hughes Brothers' Dead Presidents, and Danny Boyle's Trainspotting

And yes, as GuruAskew mentioned, Disney no longer controls the rights to the Miramax releases, but they did at the time they were licensed to Criterion, and the Parker and Hughes' films are still controlled by them through their Hollywood Pictures subsidiary.

And those are just the Criterion titles I can remember coming from Disney.
Thanks for this list.. complete or not. I was actually wondering about Disney/Criterion releases.

The fact that they are still selling titles they've licensed from Disney indicates that Disney is still allowing them to sell them.

The Disney titles were never actually licensed in the first place. They were Disney titles with Criterion branding just like Benjamin Button was a Paramount title that has the Criterion name slapped on it.

In any event, it's still unsold stock left over from years ago. I'm sure no assembly line has produced those two titles in years and I'm sure Disney and Lionsgate are thrilled to have people unloading them.

It would be so funny if the ship were The Goonies, instead of The New World.

I'd love to see The New World released on Criterion, though.

(Although I'd be just as happy with The Crimson Pirate or Captain Blood)

So far, the list of possibles doesn't excite me very much.

You're confusing with The New Land which was mentioned in one of the Wexner talks.

I take it back, The New World does appear on the list, under unknown Malick.

Here's the link. Just because it appears on the list doesn't mean that it was ever hinted at in a Newsletter or New Year cartoon, but (as others have pointed out) clues have been repeated in the past.

It wasn't from any clue. They just mention at the Wexner Center that they licensed a Malick title from Warner. This is the first time they've publicly hinted at it that I'm aware of.

I thought I had come up with an interesting possibility ... 2 Days in the Valley ... until I started researching it and was reminded of all the mixed reviews it received. Interesting cast, though, including Danny Aiello, Jeff Daniels, Glenne Headley, Peter Horton, Marsha Mason, Paul Mazursky, James Spader, Eric Stoltz, Charlize Theron, Keith Carradine, Louise Fletcher, and last but not least, Teri Hatcher, whose performance earned a nod from the Razzie Awards for Worst Supporting Actress.

Night and the City would make me very, very happy indeed! Hmmm ... is there any way we might also read Thieves Highway into the drawing or am I reaching too far?

The bridge looks like the Brooklyn Bridge. How about Sidney Lumet's A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE?

That may well be, but it wasn't my point, which is that for Criterion to still be able to sell them means that an agreement must still be in place.

I don't know if it's just my mind playing tricks on me from staring at it too long, but does this drawing look like Clint Eastwood to anyone else? I remember there were some rumors that Criterion might get A Fistful of Dollars, which was recently restored, and Sergio Leone and Eastwood's name have shown up on Criterion's site too.

Unless it doesn't.

Those titles played by different rules than the rest. It's absurd to even suggest that they are still licensed and are still being produced, especially when both are available on Blu in non-Criterion editions.
