Watched the trailer for Jellyfish Eyes and really don't know what to make of it. I thought it looked pretty abysmal, and things that look "edgy" just seemed cheap. Though this could of course be based on the edit of the trailer and not about the movie itself.

All in, this is something that I would have passed on if I knew it existed when released, just based on the footage I've seen. I doubt I would spend twenty bucks on this disc, but if they are releasing the film it is certainly an interesting (albeit questionable?) choice. But if they see something in this guy and wish to work with him, good for him to be able to get his stuff out there a bit.

"Backlash" against Criterion for releasing a film you don't like - let alone one you haven't seen - is indefensibly absurd.
So, you think it could turn out to be an underrated masterpiece?

personally, I think there are tons of "important" anime films they could release instead of this (as I see it in the trailer)..

Their "important" thing is marketing anyway. They release what they think they can make money on, end of story. Back in the day they released endless amounts of dumb fun blockbusters.

Criterion is addressed to certain customers, right?
Customers that like Fellini, Malick, Ozu, Bergman etc. etc.

I wonder how many of those customers would love to get their hands on Jellyfish Eyes..
If this was a very old film and had a cult status now, it would be different..

It veered towards that stuff a lot in the big DVD era because studios released all their own stuff, but since Laserdisc Criterion have always released whatever they could get their hands on that would sell, basically. Even on DVD they released stuff like Armageddon and Chasing Amy. In the BD era they are releasing a lot more of an eclectic lineup, especially recently. They release what they can sell, period.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Criterion releasing Jellyfish Eyes. Contemporary Japanese films are sorely underrepresented in the Collection, and region 1 BluRay in general.

I like the look of Jellyfish Eyes... I don't think that you can really tell from a trailer though, apart from the visuals. How it actually pans out - impossible to tell. I dare say I'd blind buy it on the strength of that trailer.

I don't usually make predictions, so all I'll do is echo previous calls for more P&P. A Canterbury Tale would be a day one release for me - I'd even consider paying mega bucks for MovieTyme so I could get it early...

Edit: As long as they change that awful cover!

There are many contemporary japanese film that are more deserving of the time and effort put in for a Criterion release....

TAKASHI MURAKAMI is a huge figure in modern art with JELLYFISH EYES being his first movie; it is the equivalent of Criterion releasing something by ANDY WARHOL.

This is the appeal.

Just cause he's a big artist doesn't mean his first film will be the best thing yet, the film looks cheap and doesn't really give us anything new it seems. We already have Pokemon/Digimon lol. I can't stand the guys art though, sorry >.<

I would rather see Criterion release Matthew Barney's films, but that would never happen in a million years....

Actually, they should get a bluray release of Saul Bass' Phase IV!

It's because he's a big artist that's having his film debut. It might not be a masterpiece, a few contemporary films in the collection aren't, but it is undoubtedly important. And that's one of the purposes of Criterion. Not for masterpieces of classic and contemporary, but for important classic and contemporary films.

As I said before, there are many films out there that are far more important that Criterion can release but haven't cause they waste time on silly releases :P

He must have used his power as the only visual artist on Time magazine's 2008 "100 Most Influential People" to get the Criterion treatment...

I've seen other films that are deserving and have been ignored for years though...

Obviously illd watch it if I get a chance, but not wasting my money on it, if I'm wrong about it ill admit it, but it looks awful, and some reviews have been bad for it. Also the story is very unoriginal lol

TAKASHI MURAKAMI getting the Criterion treatment is just like LENA DUNHAM getting the Criterion treatment; white entitlement strikes again.

Im sorry but what is wrong with Tiny Furniture? I see so many critizim but never see a valid reason except 'Lena Dunham'.

She's only started being annoying recently, I loved TF and also the first season of Girls wasn't bad, not seen the rest though.

My team advanced in the playoffs last night (Hawks or Wizards look out). After work today I look forward to the announcements.

A "light" month.
