This is worse than when I found out that Santa Claus is not real.

I'm still in for the Criterion Blu-ray, though.
Sorry for your loss. For real Angie you'll need to visit Big Bad Mama.

MGM could still license it. Weve seen studios release titles on blu ray only to have another label release the same thing not much later such as the Shadow and Mad Max. Escape from NY also was released by MGM and now Shout has it. Somewhat unpredictable

Criterion should announce that one next month.

I'd say especially the former, as they did it on DVD and have two other Alex Cox flicks in print, including Repo Man (AKA one of my all time favorites).

As a side note, I bought Cronos today. Great disc. Makes 13 official Criterions. 3 Criterion films in other forms of release.

So far we have got The Black Stallion and Dressed to Kill. Leaving Las Vegas and Midnight Cowboy will hopefully be upgraded soon, as well.

As for the other expectations/prediticions?

I expect to see The Silence of the Lambs and Blue Velvet coming down the line. Straw Dogs too, altough it's techically a Disney title.

Perhaps, The Graduate, Carrie, Raging Bull...or Missing in Action?
I could go for a 4k remaster of Ronin. Not sure if people would consider it Criterion material. But it is Frankenheimer.

It's also notable because

A bit disappointed in how this year is going. I do love some of what they've been releasing. Of course the soon to be coming Apu Trilogy, Hiroshima mon amour, Don't Look Now. But I'm disappointed in that out of all of their 46 releases of 2015, only 4 releases are from countries not located in Europe or North America. That said, I'm still excited for what they have coming for September, October, November and December... but less so. Because I have a feeling that they're going to keep concentrating on the United States, France, UK, and leave out other countries.

At the same time, a day like this would have made me even more disappointed had I not gone region free recently, which is like opening a door to the films Criterion will likely never release.

Nothing against Ronin, I admire the film and it's one of the few gems from Frankenheimer's later years, but I'd rather see Seven Days in May or Black Sunday finally get a release first. Granted, those films aren't controlled by MGM, but still...

I understand your point, but Criterion has always concentrated on those same countries, mostly based on directors, i too would like more movies from all around the world (excluding USA, UK, France, Japan and Italy), Germany and the USSR seem to be a bit neglected considering their strong output.

Aside from those there is a large chunk of world cinema that i would like to get my hands on, but i decided to start seeking on various services instead of waiting for the companies to put them out.

I thought a good starting point is that list that was posted a few months back: They Shoot Pictures Don't They? which contain mainly the top 1000 but also the next 1000 films from all around the world.

Here is the top 1000 for anyone interested:

http://letterboxd.com/cinebro/list/t...op-1000-films/

Criterion has released a lot of those, so i feel there is a strong possibility that the ones on that list that can be found with HD masters, mostly via Hulu or Amazon, will probably end up with a release in the near future, even if not by Criterion due to rights issues.

WHAT !!!.....oh, man, you really need to use spoiler tags. I come here to read about the new Criterion announcements and in the middle of a post you just bust out with something like that.

I guess I should have figured it out by now, otherwise we would already have Criterion blu-ray upgrades of Le Samourai, The Cranes are Flying, and The Naked Prey.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

Glad to see they're releasing Day For Night. Fantastic film!

For some reason, I've never seen Dressed to Kill, so I'll have to change that soon.

I also like it when film noir brushes with sports (boxing, wrestling, etc.).
That's a reason I'd love to see The Harder They Fall in the Collection. Bogart's last film is a great expose of the seamy side of boxing.

I think MGM is barred from sublicensing the ABC titles.

Criterion has undoubtedly spent a fortune restoring the Apu Trilogy (money that is going to be hard to earn back) and they are in the early stages of restorations of more of Ray's films (and other Indian films). I think that this means that their release slate is going to be heavy on titles that are in really good shape and/or have really good masters available (i.e. stuff from US/UK/France/Sweden.)
