It's likely that SC will do a new release based on the restoration and, like the recent Third Man blu, will turn out a fabulous transfer that bests all previous releases...at least I'm hoping for that to happen.

Yeah agreed. Don't Look Now is an amazing film. I agree with Edgar Wright's assessment on it. It's a perfect example of excellence in film editing. Long time fan of the film and the source material.

Then SC/Lionsgate sits on the rest of the titles they took from Criterion when their Region A studiocanal collection crashed and burned. ![]() Really there should be something in every contract that if the film isn't released within a given period the distribution rights go back to the films owner to do with as they please. I received the StudioCanal version of Lynch's The Elephant Man yesterday. Is this title on Criterion's radar?
I haven't seen it, but remember thinking as a 5 year old when there was so much discussion about it that it was about a man with an elephant trunk for a nose. I'd like to watch it within the next couple of weeks to see whether or not that is the case. |

Not exactly Criterion-related news, but it will be soon...
I have a UHD 4K television now. Ho ho ho. [Show spoiler] Earlier today, when I had the afternoon off, I replaced my 32" LG 1080P television with this LG 49" 2160p 120 Hz UHD 4K TV. This was halfway a spur of the moment thing and halfway something that has been on my mind since I bought my new home two months ago. I initially went to Best Buy this afternoon with the intent of shelling out $350-$400 on a good 49" to 60" 1080P television. I looked at the 1080P sets, then looked at the 4K sets just to see how astronomical the prices were. Some of the smaller ones were in my price range, but the 49" and 55" 4K televisions in that particular Best Buy had support setups that I did not care for, since my television sits on a chest in my living room. I then went to Target, and found the above LG 49" on sale for $699, and, since I've loved my LG 1080P television, it was a quick decision. Unfortunately, that Target store was completely sold out of the set. They did a search for me, and all of the Targets in the area were sold out of the set as well except for one store on the other side of the county. I drove 13 miles to the other Target after reserving the televison, and bought it there. The Target clerk notified me that this television was eligible for a 10% discount, so that helped sweeten the deal. I bought it with the 4-year Target protection plan, took it home, and set it up. I watched a few minutes of Casino Royale, which is still my "demo disc" of choice. I then watched a few minutes of a Zatoichi film. Finally, I watched a few minutes of my all-time favorite film, Out of the Past, to check how black-and-white films look on the set. I'm loving the television so far. I only sit about six feet away from this 49" television, so the fact that it is small for a 4K set is of no concern. It actually fills up my living room just like I wanted it to. One strangely spooky thing... I hooked up my Blu-ray player and HDMI to this new television, and went into the menu to see if there was a similar "Calibration Wizard" that my old LG television had. As it turned out, my custom settings from my old LG were already present on the Expert 1 picture setting of this new LG. Not sure how that happened, but the settings are pretty much identical, from what I can remember. Needless to say, I'm looking forward to watching Gilda on this set. |

Blind Chance Blu-ray REVIEW
![]() The 4K restoration is excellent and there are massive improvements virtually everywhere -- from detail and clarity to color reproduction. My one and only criticism here pertains to the brightness levels. There are a couple of indoor sequences that look a bit too dark. It is still a vastly superior presentation of the film. Also, the audio IS fully restored (and if you have seen the Artificial Eye DVD you will be able to tell right away). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 09-04-2015 at 01:59 AM. |

DRESSED TO KILL: SECOND PRINTING
These photos are from the upcoming Second Printing of this release. We will post a separate review tonight so that people can see exactly what type of corrections are made and know what they are ordering. We will also include the photos in the second review so that it is clear what the first and the second pressings look like (back covers). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 09-04-2015 at 05:43 AM. |

I think Nicholas Roeg can be a difficult director for some audiences to embrace. Personally I generally like his films, and though I wasn't blown away by the first time I saw Don't Look Now in the theater (in 2013 - 40 year anniversary), I am committed to giving the film another chance. His output is just too good to not take seriously. Walkabout is a beautiful and bizarre film, as is The Man Who Fell to Earth, as well as Insignificance. I own those 3 films and probably will purchase Don't Look Now after I watch it again, because its such an important psycho-horror film that my opinion of not liking it isn't justified whatsoever.

DRESSED TO KILL: SECOND PRINTING REVIEW
Dressed to Kill Blu-ray REVIEW ![]() We have posted photos for you to see how to recognize the correct version. You have to see the back cover or the disc (Clickable photos are in the review, linked above) ![]() The presentation is very different and much better now. There could have been a tiny bit more space on the top in a few sequences, but it's fine. Criterion deserve a lot of credit for fixing this release so quickly ![]() ![]() I hope people like it.
