I love musicals, and I love Evita too, but here, I don't know..Maybe I'd like it more if it was a regular musical with 6-7 songs in key scenes, and the rest was spoken dialogue.

I'd like to own this, but is there any chance Criterion releases a standalone Bluray?

I'd buy the French release which seems similar (has anyone compared it directly to Criterion as far as compression is concerned?), but the extras are not subtitled.
Are you saying you don't want to own The Young Girls of Rochefort, Bay of Angels, and Lola? Or have you never seen them? All these films make the Demy box something special. While The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is undoubtedly my favorite in the set, and one of my favorite films ever, I couldn't imagine just owing it and not the others. Get the whole set. It is well worth it.

Also, I think of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and The Young Girls of Rochefort more as modern operas than traditional musicals.

I haven't seen them.
And I rarely do blind buys.
I'm not sure I would love them so much to own them..
Also, I have dozens of films in my wishlist that I have seen and want to buy, so those have a priority..

From all those in the set, I only knew of Umbrellas of Cherbourg and I have a hunch it could be the best of all.
(and I didn't even wholeheartedly love the whole film)

I'd like to mention a moment in one of my most favourite scenes, the ending, that I didn't like.
I hoped that
[Show spoiler]there would be a longer pause when Genevieve and Guy saw each other, before she gets out of the car.
you know, a long pause looking at each other, like they were completely stunned.
But she came out of the car too quickly in my opinion! In just 4 seconds!
It kind of spoilt the scene for me.

I took advantage of the sale to finally pick up the L'avventura poster. I also still had the $10 certificate they gave out awhile ago.

Very well said.

Cameron is an amazing action director, say what you want about his stories.

I loved it when the kids from The Wolfpack went in there. They grabbed a few stacks lol.

I have a few sick/vacation days I need to take before the end of the year or else I use them, so I plan on whittling down my unwatched stack. Today, I rewatched Wild Strawberries and one of my blind buys, Renoir's The River. It was an enjoyable, gently-paced coming-of-age story with beautiful photography. I'm definitely glad Edward talked me into getting it.

With all of the Douglas Sirk talk earlier, I think I'll throw on Sleep, My Love for a nightcap.

Turner Classic Movies is having another "up to" sale. This time a few titles are 40% off. The majority of what I saw was 33% off.

Here is the link to the sale if anyone is looking for specific titles.

I can't speak for the French release but the UK disc is excellent. Tons of extras too.

I got excited when I say the gift certificates come up on the sale page, but I didn't realize that gc's were the only thing on the page to which the discount did not apply. It's a moot point for me anyway since holiday shopping is taking the rest of my 2015 spending money. Carry on.

I loved The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg‎, too, but I haven't made up my mind if I want to spring for the box set or import the UK release. I've seen Bay of Angels, too, and wasn't really impressed with it. It doesn't tell any kind of original story regarding gambling or more specifically, people who are addicted to it.

..and if
[Show spoiler]any movie ever ended abruptly w/ seemingly no real end, this was it.

I love most of the films in the Demy set, and would recommend it very highly, but if you're just after Cherbourg then you could do worse than the UK set. I picked it up prior to the Criterion and was perfectly happy with it.

well, I don't know if you care for encoding/compression at all, but the UK seems to have inferior one comparing to Criterion. That's why i asked how the French compares.

By the way, since yesterday that i saw the movie, I kind of obsessed with it, and playing in repeat 2 scenes...

[Show spoiler] ...and crying.
the first goodbye and the ending goodbye.
Especially in the ending, I have read some comments that say Guy has moved on and doesn't feel anything for her and has forgotten her, but I choose to believe that he hasn't, and he feels so much pain inside but he doesn't show it.
And the very ending is very tragic.
If it ended with just the car leaving it would be just sad, but the next shot shows Guy acting happy with his kid and wife (and the music raises tonality at the same time becoming even more dramatic), and it's a moment of big irony and tragicness for me.
He "acts" happy, he doesn't cry, but we're left crying for him and feeling his pain!
I especially love such counterpoint scenes in cinema, where the music is in total contrast with the visuals. Tragic music, happy faces!

I ordered all blu-rays through February 2016 from Criterion with the 20% off. By the next flash sale this should get me a $50 gift certificate.

At first, I almost backed out because I selected to not hold and ship titles together. I was worried they would hold everything and make one big shipment in Feb 2016.
However, they will make a shipment each month and I still get the free shipping. I can wait a few weeks on titles to save the extra $6-7 bucks on shipping.

You should check out The Young Girls of Rochefort it is more like a regular musical, I was a bit underwhelmed by Umbrellas of Cherbourg and also thought it would work better as a regular musical.

There is no bad movie in the Jacques Demy set, in my opinion.

Donkey Skin may be the worst out of the bunch, but even that film has its moments.

I had a dream last night that I purchased The Complete Jacques Tati again and I was watching the films and enjoying them and I don't know if I should take this as a sign or what.

My initial reactions to Tati and his films was incredibly lukewarm. I fancied his vision but never particularly cared for his execution. Maybe I was expecting to laugh or what not, but I really don't know.

Well, it's a happy musical, judging from the trailer, isn't it?
I especially loved the in-your-face sentimentalism of Umbrellas of Cherbourg!
I love crying in movies!

I'll be curious to see how the new restoration looks compared the Criterion edition.
Have you tried comparing the two yet?

Sorry to say I haven't, and won't get a chance to until sometime next week. Unfortunately, if you're looking for picture quality comparisons I'm probably not your guy. I don't have much of a critical eye for that stuff.
