Ray Jackson and the Philosophers Stone eh?

That's a pretty good line though, next time I get a side eye after coming home w a bagful of blu Rays - "I just love myself more than you I guess."

I dont know what to expect either, but Everlasting Moments is one of the best movies that I've watched in the past few months. I hope The Emigrants and The New Land is just as good and touching as Everlasting Moments was for me.

I watched Everlasting Moments within the past few months, too, and I enjoyed it, but I don't think it's something I'd ever need to watch again. I'm hoping that's not the case with Here Is Your Life, as I purchased that one in July as a blind-buy.

I really loved Everlasting Moments too but yeah, it's going to be a while before it gets past the 'what am I in the mood for' hurdle.

Blind buying is 100% pure adrenaline my friend.

Some people snort for it, jab a vein for it.

...all you gotta do is hand over that credit card.

I generally share this philosophy.

However, I made it a point to watch all six Star Wars movies on Black Friday to get geared up for the new one coming out in a couple of weeks. I had not watched these movies since 2012, when I bought the Complete Saga Blu-ray set, and I figured that this six-movie marathon "fix" would get me through for the next several years. As it turns out, I ended up watching all six of them again at various times after Black Friday was over, and I've even revisited The Empire Strikes Back three times. I've been enjoying these flicks over and over again, my huge stack of still-unwatched new Blu-rays be damned.

I really really need to get back to my Zatoichi set and finish those movies up.

I love when a blind buy works, and the feeling of doing it, but in a lot of cases I prefer to spend as little as possible before deciding to own a movie.

Does not need to warrant a lot of watches but at least has to be something I want to experience again sometime in the future or something I would like to share with someone close to watch and discuss at some point.

I don't like to be just a stacker to impress people with how my collection looks, although I am coming to the point where I have too many to realistically watch everything once again, especially since I give priority to watch stuff I haven't seen before.

I'm seasoned enough now to have "blind buys" be more like "calculated gambles" because I can usually tell by reading a summary or review whether there's a high chance I will like something I've never seen or heard of before.

Still, there's a level of engagement to the product in blind buys that you don't have with "safe" ones. You put down money on it, so you will either consciously or unconsciously engage with the product on a deeper level than something you are familiar with or something you got for free. Psychologically, this aids in possibly broadening one's horizons and giving one a better perspective on--in this particular case--the medium you are engaging in.

Came home from work to find this gorgeous piece of cinema waiting for me:

[Show spoiler]

I'll be curious to see how the new restoration looks compared the Criterion edition.

This made me laugh.

It is extremely challenging. The pacing reminded me of Tarkovsky's slower work, but it kept me engaged to a degree. It sounds like you didn't like it as much as I did.

I appreciated it more than I liked it, but that's a good viewing, too. I'm glad I watched it. Personally I always like a more linear narrative.
It does make me want to get in the right mindset to watch the two new releases and Everlasting Moments.

I was so very pleased to see that the New York Film Critics Circle voted a special award this year to William Becker and Janus Films. It is most richly deserved, and my only regret is that it was not given to Mr. Becker during his lifetime. I hope that as the 2015 awards seasons continues to unfold, that more prizes and acknowledgements come to Mr. Becker, Janus, and (by association) the Criterion Collection.

Over the last few months I've made a point of trying to get my unwatched film count down under 250 and I came very close during the Halloween season but the seasonal shopping frenzy has me backsliding again.

But yeah, it's hard not to just throw Chinatown or Young Frankenstein in for the millionth time.

I know it's a much smaller amount, but I was happy to finally get my unwatched movies down to under 100 recently, only to see it go up to almost 120 after everything arrives and counting my last recent hauls from the Criterion sale.

Question Criterion to produce a separate line

I Love Criterion they always produce very high quality transfers and special features in all their films. But I would love to see them put out a seperate line of Horror and Cult films and special editions I'm sure they would do a terrific job even better then arrows and the fans would love to see that as well, especially on the Region A US side of things I know Shout/Scream Factory is pretty damn good with their horror releases but who wouldn't want to see a Criterion Label dedicated strictly to Horror/Cult Films I for one would be the first in line!!

Criterion did put out some cult horror in their LD days, but there are some great labels in the cult horror segment. Apart from Shout/Scream (who should improve on their encoding issues) Synapse, Severin, Vinegar Syndrome are doing some excellent work. It's always better to have competition than depend on one monolith entity.

Haha, I'm sure there would be good many that would argue with your "better than arrow" remark considering some of the comparisons made between competing releases by the 2 companies, but both of them are doing a great job in their respective spheres and for region-free collectors' it's a paradise, limited only by their budget and viewing time.

Yeah VS, Severin, Code Red, Scorpion, Synapse And Blue Underground do put out some good horror/cult films but as far as arrow it seems the uk gets all the benefits when it comes to pricing and titles where as even with arrows US releases their extremely high in price in comparison and the Arrow LE Sets like Videodrome, Hellraiser, Neckromantic, Society, Mona Lisa And The Long Good Friday and soon to be released Deep Red are definetly top notch releasing of any blu-rays I've seen so far in terms of quality, special features, extras not to mention their always detailed product artwork and casing i just wish their was more of that available for the US. its just the price people have to pay when it comes to the different companies.. I'm sure the UK would love to be able to pick up the Shout/Scream Factory titles at the price US does and Vinegar Syndrome as you mentioned I'm thrilled with what they've been doing as of late a big jump to their line and Synapse as well coming out with Tenebrae, Phenomena, Popcorn, And Suspiria so in a way having different companies in compitition is always better then having a monopoly on one genre in the market so in that aspect i totally agree with you.
