The Squid and The Whale
Pan's Labyrinth....
That's odd. I own quite a bit of Criterion titles and I've never noticed that. Are those the only titles it does it for you? I don't have the ones you mentioned.

Ladies and Gentleman, I proudly announce....

SUMAMA 'itch!

It's the damn television. It's failing. The Criterion thing was simply coincidence. I put in the disc and let it play and the line was there again, so I let it play and switched to tv and the line was there. Then I switched back to the player stuck in a plain ol' dvd and the line was there.

SO, I put Pan's back in and the lie was there, but while it was playing I turned the tv off. I waited several seconds and turned the tv back on...

the line was gone.

So whoever wants to start me a go fund me page, many thanks. lol

I highly recommend this. It's a fairly basic biographical doc, but there's a few nice tidbits I didn't know. Plus, it's always fun to take a trip through history with Mifune.

I watched it the day it was up on Netflix, and found my seven month old son entranced at the shots of Seven Samurai. When I was watching FilmStruck's interview with Tatsuya Nakadai, once again, he was entranced by Seven Samurai. So, I put the movie in and let it play in the background while we were playing and going about our day. He was quite the happy camper that day.

I suppose it only makes sense that Seven Samurai would be his favorite movie; his middle name is 'Ronin'.

I wanted my son's middle name to be 'Toshiro', but the wife shot it down. Her reason was that she couldn't pronounce it. She also shot down 'Hieronymus'.

Anyway...any news on a new release date for Othello, or did I miss it? I was hoping it would be released in time for the B&N sale.

Edit...I guess to answer my own question, Othello now due on September 26th, per Criterion's website.

Add me to the list of those that have sold the Criterion edition of The Third Man. I needed the money to pay a bill and I listed it without flinching. I have no problem purchasing the region free blu-ray the next time I want to view it.

If you go to the Criterion.com website, a release date of 9/26/17 is listed for Othello. I don't recall seeing any official news about the new release date though or a reason for the delay .

Does Drunken Angel qualify as noir? I felt it was a melodrama with the doc and gangster characters. Didn't quite enjoy, I thought it was rather loud and theatrical.

I actually retract my statement. I watched the blu ray for Blue Velvet last night. It's been a while since I watched it and I agree, it's not transfer I want touched really. It's pretty damn gorgeous.

I don't think it's noir. Then again, I have a narrow definition of film noir and don't believe in the terms "new noir", "neo noir", etc.

Default Criterion needs to add...

So they just re-released HEAT on Blu-ray. The Definitive Directors Edition. The word is that they remastered from a 4k scan but they don't really talk about the source. Criterion is the only organization I've seen that does high res scans from the original negative.

Can we get Criterion to do a MANHUNTER remaster... Like they did with THIEF?

This is extremely common. Disney and Warner have done 4K transfers for a long time now (Warner has done 8K transfers since the mid-2000s for certain films.) Fox has been doing 4K transfers for catalog titles since the late 2000s. It has nothing to do with Criterion.
