It's kind of an outlier in Richardson's filmography (at least from what I've seen), maybe "The Loved One" has some similarity, but the humor is applied to such a different target there. I think that his early stuff informs "Tom Jones" in an interesting way, but I wouldn't think it's a good barometer in either direction.

I'm disappointed. Tom Jones is nice, but I was hoping Criterion would finally be remastering Tunes of Glory.

I've never ordered a Criterion before. Are they normally $40 a go or does the price come down?

There are regular flash sales on criterion.com and month long sales at Barnes and Noble where they go for $20. Or you can keep an eye out for individual deals that might go a bit lower.

They have been dropping to $22 around release date.

Criterion and Barnes and Noble have two sales a year where everything is 50%.

If you don't have an account with Criterion's web site, set one up. There is normally a half-price sale at the end of February/beginning of March, and these titles will presumably be included (that's when I plan on ordering them).

Also, Barnes & Noble also has two half-off sales during the year, including one that's currently going. They usually hit in July and November.

Outside of Two Days, One Night and maybe Rosetta, I don’t really see the Dardennes as working in the same “issue movie” mode as, say, Ken Loach. They do tend to focus on impoverished characters, which is inevitably (?) going to involve a certain amount of social commentary—but I don’t see them as “message movies” in the traditional sense.

I guess one of the distinctions to me is that the characters in the Dardennes’ best films feel real and organic, rather than symbols meant to get a point across. They feel like flesh-and-blood humans, and I get completely caught up in their situations and their moral decisions. The Kid With a Bike and The Son are still among my most visceral film-watching experiences, and La Promesse is in the running for my favorite movie.

Of course, I don’t necessarily think being an “issue movie” is inherently a terrible thing. I have no idea how well something like I, Daniel Blake will age, but for now I found it vital and moving. And going much further back, a movie like Inherit the Wind—as heavy-handed and unsubtle as it is—is still a lot of fun to watch, and even powerful at times.

Edit: In defense of Loach—while I find him inconsistent and can agree that he often lets his tendency towards social commentary get in the way of the story he’s trying to tell, I do think he’s made more good movies than just Kes. I’ve only seen about a third of his filmography, but Sweet Sixteen, My Name is Joe, Riff-Raff, Ladybird, Ladybird, and Land and Freedom all have a lot to offer—and I might even call a few of them great.

I first saw Inherit the Wind on TV when I was around eight or nine and found it riveting. I've accepted evolution as fact ever since. If that movie was out to do something, it did it to me.

Off-topic slightly, but I've lost the link to that post listing all the Hitchcock releases. Anyone have it?

Somehow, Criterion always makes February (my least favorite month of the year) into one of the best. Definitely in for NOTLD and Silence of the Lambs and will probably blind buy Elevator to the Gallows (a friend recommended it to me).

NOTLD was already on my wishlist, I was holding off on a purchase due to the rumors of a Criterion release. Never heard of any of the others bar Silence, which is actually an incredibly high name-recognition rate for me, but Elevator seems interesting.

A Taste of Honey is solid kitchen-sink drama. If anything, Tom Jones might be compared with Barry Lyndon - although it is much lighter in tone.

I just wanna say that a George Romero approved 4k restoration of Night of the Living Dead being released by Criterion on blu-ray is a pretty big fxxkin' deal.

I watched the trailer and that is exactly what I thought - that it looked like a comic Barry Lyndon!

I wish we'd get some more of the British kitchen sink dramas into the CC. There are a few note-worthy ones that don't have U.S. releases as of yet.

Barnes and Noble has a sale on Criterion titles twice a year. I can also say the prices are reasonable when first released (I got Ghost World around release time online it was 27 after S&H)
