When every single film is a blind-buy and they cost so much, not to mention the hassle of importing, these sorts of lists become very annoying.

They get less blind as you go through them and get an idea of what to expect from specific directors, actors, etc. but having something like FilmStruck available here (although I'm not sure how much of the Criterion library is on there) would be a much better situation.

I hate living here sometimes.

You don’t have to be rude. I was just curious. You guys are aware there are thousands of pages. And I’m not going to search through every one. I was just looking for a general idea. My goodness.

Sophia Coppola fans out there, The Beguiled is down to $6.49 right now on Amazon. Almost certainly a price mistake.

Just finished watching Gimme Shelter. I had seen it once before years ago, but had forgotten just how effective it is in documenting the chaos of Altamont, and the juxtaposition of the naivety and almost total helplessness of the organizers and musicians with the reality of what happens when 300,000 people gather in one place, and different countercultures collide. I had also forgotten that the exact moment
[Show spoiler]Meredith Hunter pulls a gun and is stabbed to death by a Hells Angel just a few feet in front of the Stones
was shockingly caught on film.

Altamont is often cited as the day the "innocence" died, bringing about the end of the era of "peace & love" and ushering in more cynical times. However, the strength of the film is that it makes no judgements,
[Show spoiler]with the result that the behaviour of many of the concertgoers seems as entitled and confrontational as that of the Hells Angels.

Great documentary.

Asking folks what thier top ten Criterions are is always a great question. It gets us to think and reavalute our lists as we watch more films as time passes.

Also, as you can plainly see, most people are more than happy to talk about their favorite films, no matter how many times they've done so.

The.only problem I have is, just ten!?

I'm going to cheat a little because I certainly don't own all of these. I'm also not going to rank them because then the list would take 10 times as long to compile.

In alphabetical order (and I'm probably forgetting a few, but you can't go wrong with any of these IMO):

- 12 Angry Men
- The 400 Blows
- Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
- The Battle of Algiers
- Before Sunrise (Before Trilogy)
- Before Sunset (Before Trilogy)
- The Bicycle Thieves
- Close-Up
- Pan's Labyrinth
- The Wages of Fear

11. The Breakfast Club, because it's a great movie and the absurd snobbery from people who think otherwise will be entertaining to read. I love this thread and its posters, but some people here really come across as bad parodies of art snobs.

And if Ferris Bueller's Day Off had an official announcement, it'd be on my main list. (Although I agree with the sentiment that Criterion re-releasing a sub-$6 movie is questionable, just because even I who loves it would be hesitant to double-dip when the current Blu is perfectly fine.)

The lack of Harakiri on many of these Top Ten lists is disturbing.

But other than that some great choices
