It has for the last few sales (to a degree). Once the first day of the sale rolls around, everything else from July was reduced in price before street date, as were the titles from the next month.

That might not be the case for this upcoming sale, but we won't know until it happens.

I agree. I'm not a vegetarian, or vegan, but there is a difference between humanely killing an animal for food and brutally killing and torturing an animal for "entertainment." I'm disgusted that Criterion would even be a party to such a release. I foresee calls for boycotts of Criterion over this.

I doubt it. Consider that Criterion has sold this DVD for years, and that DVDs in general sold more than Blu-rays. And yet this issue is so obscure that, despite being mentioned on the Wikipedia page for the movie, nobody complaining here actually knew about it before. It would be hard to deny the possibility that there will be individual calls for a boycott of the label, I doubt they will stick at all.

Post A clockwork orange

If there was a film by Stanley Kubrick I would love to see released on Blu-ray by Criterion, it would by Kubrick's 1971 classic A CLOCKWORK ORANGE.

In 2011, a 4K-restored version was shown at the Cannes Film Festival, but when the movie was re-released on Blu-ray for its 40th anniversary, the presentation was the same not-so-good transfer from 2007. Clips of the 4K restoration were on the Blu-ray, but only as clips in the special features.

If Warner could give Criterion the okay to release the 4K restoration of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE on Blu-ray, that would make the day of any fans of the movie.

Man, watching the 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony really has me hoping for early Zhang Yimou on bluray. Make it happen CC!

If it is, then Dragon Inn is going in my order.

Agreed. I would also add Lolita. But A Clockwork Orange first.

No, I don't. It was hinted at in the New Year's drawing and mentioned in third party articles, but Criterion themselves never "announced" it until it was ready to be released.

That article is not an official announcement, nor does it give a date for release.

I wouldn't go that far. It's an important film that should be released. Even though some parts are really ****ed up.

Yeah, nah. 99.9% of filmmakers have figured out how to make important films without resorting to animal cruelty. Think I’ll file Tarkovsky under “D” for “don’t bother”.

I agree. Even though I am one of those who a). has never seen the film, b). did not know about the animal cruelty content before, and c). has posted that he will now not be buying it because of the cruelty.

My decision is very much an individual one for this particular release. I respect Criterion's right to release it, and the right others have to buy it.

Also of course, not having seen the film, I may lack an understanding of the context in which Tarkovsky intentionally and graphically killed animals on camera. Perhaps someone with an understanding of his motivations - and the "necessity" of these scenes - would care to post (in spoiler tags if need be), so that at least I can learn the reason for their inclusion.

You're right, but it should still be released and it's no reason to boycott Criterion.

Glad you agree. Another good thing to know about A CLOCKWORK ORANGE is that it is ranked #70 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 Greatest American Movies of All Time (the 10th anniversary edition from 2007).

I know I mention the AFI 100 Films a lot; I'm just really impressed by both versions of the list (both the 1998 original and the 2007 updated versions).

It was mentioned on the page before, but considering "Andrei Rublev" has been released by Criterion for nearly 20 years on DVD, and no protests or boycotts have occurred, the boycotting would essentially be due to a BD release?

"We were fine with you releasing this film in standard definition, but putting this out in high definition, now that is a bridge too far."

You can add Godard and Jodorowsky to your list, they both killed/hurt animals for their films. I'm an animal lover myself and would rather not see films where animals were hurt but Andrei Rublev has been on my watchlist for a while even though I knew about the horse, I think it's a film I need to watch at some point even though it might not be a pleasing experience.

A mod can delete this as its a bit off topic, but you say you are not a veggie/vegan, so i'm assuming you eat at major fast food chains? You do realise most places use halal meat... its a pretty cruel way to kill an animal and not exactly humane... yet you are happy to moan at how it's used in a film made years ago.

AH well, im happy we are getting this release after everyone has waited so patiently. Criterions been awesome this year with catching up with what everyone wants!

The only Tarkovsky films I have seen are Solaris and Stalker, and i loved them both. They were both highly philosophical, spiritual, and mind-bending pieces of cinema that are unforgettable. So I'm looking forward to Andrei Rublev.
