Are their sales usually on Tuedays? The last two have been, but I have no prior experience before that.I figured it would be on the 17th.

What’s the hold-up?
That, much like Godard’s King Lear and Linklater’s subUrbia seems to have fallen by the wayside. It’ll probably happen eventually, as in the case of Y Tu Mama Tambien.

Where is this info on Tales of Hoffmann coming from?

Thelma Schoonmaker said something about it coming back to Criterion a few years back.

Since nothing has happened since, not sure if it fell through or what.

I was thinking 10/16 also, but I hope it ends up being this Tuesday.

Hang in there buddy! Time flies and the sale will be happening before you know it.

By the way, what do you plan to pick up during the flash sale?

I finally plan on getting the Zatoichi set. For the moment, my DVR and film backlog will keep me busy.

I don't think subUrbia was ever said to be with Criterion, just that Linklater was trying to get them interested. Warner Archive finally released it on DVD, so that's something, but it also suggests (to me) that Criterion wasn't biting.

And even when they are specifically said to be with Criterion, sometimes either things change or people misspoke, like with "Welcome to the Dollhouse".

I just finished watching Tunes of Glory on TCM and the print showed looked fantastic. I think someone a while back said that Janus is screening a new restoration. This and 49th Parallel need to get to BluRay.

Yep they are. It premiered at Venice last month.

Good to hear it is already on TCM!

I just checked, it's streaming on TCM On-line right now if anybody else wants to give it a shot. I'm disappointed to see that they couldn't fix the final reel entirely, but the damage is a lot less noticeable than the previous DVD transfer (or for that matter the VHS one).

The original dual-format version of the Zatoichi set was my first purchase from the Criterion shop along with Fantastic Mr. Fox during the February flash sale back in 2014. Zatoichi is definitely one of the best purchases I have ever made. Even the “worst” films in the set are quite entertaining.

Tunes of Glory is sitting in my DVR right now along with The Horse’s Mouth. I look forward to watching both later this week as part of an Alec Guinness double feature. I will pay special attention to the last reel now that you have pointed out the issues with it.

Same director (Ronald Neame) and romantic interest (Kay Walsh) too, so they really are a natural pair.

Oh yes, I’m getting it on too.

For me, it’ll be-
-The Princess Bride, and
-Ingmar Bergman’s Cinema.

My choices of Criterions are seriously clashing with my current Anime choices.

Fairy Tail right next to The Silence of the Lambs. Polar opposites.

Yeah, it will be just the Bergman Cinema set for me during the B&N sale. I'll pick up Some Like it Hot in December alongside my pre-order for Forty Guns. Then probably pick up a few over the holidays and then hopefully go to town on the next flash sale.

I finally watched this incredible movie. Stunning, stunning, stunning!

Only one question: what the heck was up with the aspect ratio/framing??

1.66 is commonly referred to as European Widescreen. Not sure exactly what the "problem" is.
