Well it's an article and a preposition put together to be more precise. So I think the film would be safely alphabetised under *A*. It would be like classing From Here to Eternity under H instead of F.

Gotcha---good to know. Maybe I'll look to move the DVDs now while they are "OOP".

This is correct. Prepositions are not skipped in alphabetizing. Just as "A la" (the feminine form) is filed under A, likewise "Au" (the masculine form) is filed under A.

The age difference that I found creepy was between Hepburn and Fred Astaire in Funny Face. Astaire was 30 years older, and seemed every day of that (if not even more!). I had read so many wonderful things about this movie, but I found Astaire's character quite revolting, and it wasn't just the age difference, but that was definitely a factor. I made it to the end, but I'll never revisit that movie!

My suggestion when it comes to alphabetizing titles in foreign languages is to disregard the normal rules re: ignoring the articles such as “The”. Not all languages conform to the same grammatical rules as English so trying to do “direct” translations of words and terms gets messy. So just file Au Hasard under “A”, El Mariachi under “E”, etc.

I have Studio Canal blu-rays of Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire which are serviceable(nothing is as bad as Pathe's blu-ray of Le Samourai), but I don't think a better master of either film currently exists at the moment. Worst comes to worst, would Criterion do a Le Samourai with either title or just wait for a 4K master? Last Year at Marienbad recently had a 4K restoration. I'm not sure about Le Cercle Rouge and Army of Shadows and whether or not in the case of the latter the transfer Criterion previously released is the best currently in existence. Criterion's old Leon Morin, Priest release is already 4K-sourced though I believe.
We may know in about 30 days...

That and you then have to remember the rules you used.

My DVD of The Great Escape is scuffed, but the looks of it. Got to the guards discovering Tom, and froze and wouldn't play any further. Rather spoiled my run of enjoyable films I was looking forward to, although Mad Mad Mad Mad World and Pink Panther were fantastic and somewhat made up for it.

For those who haven't been keeping up with the Kino Lorber Studio Classics films and find yourself confused about the StudioCanal talk in this thread, here you go (just some of the highlights).

Yes, we do have some horror titles.

SC also did smaller deals with two other labels, so some of the essential horror titles and foreign films ended up with these two other labels.

We cannot confirm or deny any titles.

Poor young Audrey. She kept getting paired with these aging leading men. Bogart in Sabrina, Fred Astaire in Funny Face, Gary Cooper in Love in the Afternoon, Cary Grant in Charade and Rex Harrison in My Fair Lady. Yet audiences bought it back then. Go figure.

I didn't find Astaire's character in Funny Face particularly revolting. What I did notice though, is that Astaire looked not only old, but sickly. Gene Kelly would have been a better fit, even though I'm not a big fan of Kelly as an actor.

Grant declining this role was a sin; his suaveness and sophistication would have bounced off Holden's rascally charm well, and the union would have been far more believable.

I adore Bogart but he's the "elephant in the room" in this movie and it doesn't work because of it IMO.

It's not just "audiences bought it" -- her whole movie star persona was based around playing the young girl who is inspired by her love for an older man. They even tag it into "Wait Until Dark". You could even say it's true of "A Nun's Story", it's just that the older man there is God. Another one to add to your list, she got her start in the Broadway version of "Gigi".

Wouldn't that be true of any system of alphabetizing? I figure that if I use the methods that are most intuitive to me, I'll be more likely to remember them.

But I'm glad that French people corrected the "au" thing, because filing "Au Revoir" under R didn't sound right to me the more I thought about it.

I couldn’t agree more. That is the single worst relationship not just for the age difference, but for the fact that he’s a paternalistic twit that just keeps berating her for being interested in books/learning cause her real calling in life is to serve as wife to an old creaky creep like him!!! And that’s actually the attitude of the movie, as well. It’s insane how regressive that movie is, even by 50s romance movies. It’s like they were trying to make a movie that was the exact opposite of Born Yesterday.

I’d tried to put that atrocity out of my mind, and your post brought it all rushing back!!!

I still like Sabrina, though!

Would you guys like me to spike out the discontinued, out of print, and dual format releases in the OP? What about films that had replacement cases? Anything else?

Hopefully I’ll be done by year’s end.

I think OOP & replacement cases should stay, but the rest, in my eyes, are expendable.

OOP and replacement cases should stay. Also of course, dual format releases that are still in print like Persona, Jules and Jim etc.
