Scanners for sure!
Check out DVDBeaver's Review/Comparison. Compared to the other two releases, I see a noticeable reduction of fine detail and a significantly darker picture. It's said to be "supervised by director" but I just can't understand how that is the result... |

Nothing wrong with it per se.
Arrow put out the Siodmak and Siegel adaptations of The Killers as separate releases. This allowed for each film to have a higher bitrate than when packed together on the Criterion (and visibly better grain structure at least for the Siodmak film). Also, the Arrow release provided Siegel's version in both made-for-TV 4:3 and cropped-for-cinema 1.85:1 ratios. |

I'm extremely happy with my Criterion edition. But it's nice to see such a wonderful but, let's admit it: easily ignorable today, film be getting attention. |

Neither is perfect but the Criterion is better IMO. The UK disc has blown-out highlights from contrast boosting and less detail. The Criterion is dark but otherwise looks lovely, and in motion on a TV without comparison caps right next to it the darkness isn't an issue at all. That's one big way caps can be deceptive.
Anyway, a Criterion to avoid IMO is Pan's Labyrinth. The color doesn't match what Del Toro states was designed in the commentary, approved by him or not, and the compression is poor. The UK disc, if you are region-free, is better. |

Criterion's release of Harakiri is contrast boosted (like many of their B&W films) and cropped compared to Eureka's version of the film in the UK. The latter looks more like film than the more digital looking CC transfer. CC does have better extras though.
Late Spring was released in Japan after CC's release, sourced from a new 4K restoration. It's region free, and has English subs https://www.amazon.co.jp/Late-Spring...=AN1VRQENFRJN5 Last edited by MifuneFan; 01-28-2019 at 01:45 PM. |
