The media section of the B&N I shopped at during the last Criterion sale was already in the midst of being mothballed. Only the Criterion section was fully stocked, everything else had either been cleared out or was in the midst of it.

They also have a rewards system. $50 in credit for every $500.00 spent. That's the main reason I moved from the B&N sales to flash sales for my larger orders.

I was able to take advantage of that twice now, so I am more inclined to keep ordering through Criterion wherever possible.

I only use B&N when I get too impatient.

found and am watching Woman in the Dunes from the library and checked the boxset is out of print but there is a BD of this movie. What about the other 2 that was in the DVD boxset? Possible BD releases?

FWIW, Asked on their FB page and they basically said to stay tuned. I'm sure they know if they are having one, just hasn't been announced as of yet.

That's heartbreaking, honestly. I love to shop at my local (in all about 3 or 4 around Baltimore) B&Ns. I have not seen any of the demise around here, knock on wood, and it's just the opposite, except for Target shrinking all but 1 store's media area. Best Buys around here are robust. I'm grateful for living in a big-ish city.

I really want Barnes to succeed, because I doubt I'll pick up Criterions any longer if the B&Ns sales stop; I just purchase way more in stores than I do online/Amazon.

That probably won't affect the July sale, since it will take a while for the sale to take effect.

I watched Letter Never Sent today and was totally into the film. Loved the way it was shot.

BTW, I bought it 'used' for $5. Damn great blind-buy!

"I'll just buy from Criterion" is fine if you live in the US. A lot of people don't, though.

I don't live in the US and buy directly from Criterion.

That's what parcel-forwarding sites like MyVipBox and Shipito are for.

B&N stores in New Jersey are also in good shape Criterion-wise, however all other boutique blu-ray labels have reduced dramatically, and most stores have actually allowed vinyl to flourish, go figure!

To clarify, the three stores I frequent all still carry a decent number of Criterion titles. It's just a bit depressing shopping there now, what with the run-down media departments, and variable levels of service. As I didn't buy books in-store, I used B&N membership solely during the Criterion events. The Criterion loyalty program equates to the 10% B&N member discount - except I don't have to pay $25 a year to join.

What is this Criterion loyalty? I have the b&N membership and only get criterions now unless I get some random vinyl.

Having been in 5 [2 in a previous state] within in the last 3 years the Criterion section is always rather healthy though it tend to go BD so getting say Fires on the Plain was kinda random since it is an older title.

Of course having worked at 1 here there still was a good selection but when I was working during the fall sale I didn't check out many maybe less than 20 taking advantage of the sale.

They're usable, but they're expensive. Cost me $150 to ship a handful of discs a couple of months ago. Well more than the actual price of what I was shipping.

You get one point for every dollar spent (excluding shipping or sales tax). At 500 points, you get a $50 gift certificate (effectively a 10% discount on your $500 spend). It then resets.

Shipping during the flash sales is free for orders over $50.

Only disadvantage is that there are currently two Criterion 24-hour flash sales per year, whereas there are two B&N events - each lasting about a month. So, a much smaller window to shop.

Criterion sales are also only on in-stock titles, whereas B&N have time to restock things over the course of the month and the sale applies to pre-orders.

Seems similar here - the two B&N's in my area are quite healthy, but that may be because there is almost no bookstore competition left. And despite the other media having shrunk, their Criterion section is more stocked than ever. Vinyl is the only other media area that has expanded, and with the coupons I get from my membership, I shop from that area as well.

Between Criterions, books, vinyl, an the occasional other BD or CD, my membership pays for itself easily every year. But that would come crashing down if the Criterion sale ever stopped. And while I would certainly still source some of the films that I want directly from Criterion, I'm quite certain that my blind buys would taper off. Without these sales, at least from my standpoint, it would be lose/lose for both selling parties.
