Super excited about the Wenders. It's been a long time coming. I have seen this film a few times theatrically over the years, but never this cut. Take your bathroom breaks beforehand. With it being released in December, there will be plenty of sales from B&N around that time, to make the purchase an even sweeter one. Anything pre-code and with Alec Guiness in it always seems to find it's way in my collection, so bravo CC. The Reichardt film is a no-go all the way, but congrats to those that enjoy her. A very solid month and the Wenders is WAYYYY overdue.

Just got this in the mail today....

Man, I love Criterion. Including that scratch and sniff card was a classy move and if I am not mistaken, I believe it is a reproduction of the card they handed out in the movie theater when I first saw this film. I sure hope Desperate Living is next in line for the Criterion treatment. That is my all time favorite John Waters film and my introduction to trash cinema when I saw it in San Francisco in 1978 on a double bill with The Punk Rock Movie. I have never been the same.....

I have yet to see any of these, but I'm going to be doing a lot of blind buying from this group. Until the End of the World and The Story of Temple Drake both grabbed me immediately. I've been meaning to check out Kelly Reichardt's work-maybe I'll grab Certain Women during the sale.

And Tunes of Glory is a must have, for me. I love everything Sir Alec Guinness. Now if we could only get the remainder of his early work with David Lean on blu-ray. Baffling, to me, that Oliver Twist and Great Expectations have yet to make be upgraded.

And I've got to say, the covers this month are simply divine. I thought there were a few clunkers a couple months ago, but Criterion has been choosing some beautiful works. The two Bette Davis covers, especially.

Nothing for me this time (although Tunes of Glory looks interesting), which is okay since Criterion announced three titles last month that I plan on picking up.

I'd like WAC or Criterion ( or anyone, really) to release The Sign of the Cross with Claudette Colbert, or a blu-ray of Midnight

[Show spoiler]

The former has had a release in France from Elephant, so it should eventually got an English-friendly release, at least.

I'm not sure about the Reichardt, as I really know practically nothing about it. Research required, but it doesn't sound exactly like my kind of thing.

I'll certainly be getting the other three, though. I'm super-duper excited about The Story of Temple Drake which is definitely right up my alley. I've never seen it, but have read about it a number of times over the years. I haven't seen Tunes of Glory in ages, but that is a heck of a movie. The 287-minute Wenders will be a first time viewing, so really looking forward to that! And I agree with the other posters who commented on what a beautiful group of covers in December.

But yeah, it'll be X-Mas in the AaronJ household when the Miriam Hopkins flick arrives.

For me it thoroughly surpassed the "other" war film of that year.
Yep

The New World definitely clicked first time around (around 2006-2007 when I saw it).

I would have first seen TTRL around 2005 on DVD. I think I had set narrative expectations from a war film at the time (can probably put that down to my age at the time and the fact that I was just seriously starting to get into cinema) which it did not really meet. Also, I didn’t go into The New World with those sorts of expectations so was more able to take it in for what it was.

Anyway, I would now agree that I prefer it to SPR overall, although I quite like that too. But I prefer Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Paths of Glory to both TTRL and SPR too, relatively speaking.

I really appreciate and am impressed by both Malick films. But, I'm sort of Malick fanatic, so there's no real surprise there.

I really hope the lack of Kurosawa releases isn't because they are preparing a giant box set. After buying every single releases for years, I just want the last few big ones left to come out (Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, Bad Sleep Well, Red Beard, Dersu ursula and Ran)...

Really hoping that Barnes & Noble can stretch their November Criterion sale to 12/10.

As a huge John Waters fan I've been saying I'll wait for the B&N sale, or a flash sale, to get this. But now that it's out...I. Just. Don't. Know. And I am 100% all for Desperate Living. Here's hoping Pink Flamingos comes soon as Waters stated Warners is releasing it themselves!

Until then, I'll just rewatch this video:

They've continued to release single Bergmans after his box set.

Desperate Living is severely underrated. Despite Divine not being present it's just as strong as what came before it. Not even 10 minutes in when the wife and maid are fleeing their home across the front lawn with blaring creature feature esque music playing, I absolutely lost my mind and had to pause the movie and breath. It's fantastic.

I asked Kino whether they had rights to release Nights of Cabiria (Le notti di Cabiria) my favorite Fellini film, and they said it's with another label. The film recently got a 4K restoration, and was just released on Blu-ray in Spain by Studiocanal (also in Japan). This almost certainly means Criterion got it back, and will likely be releasing it in 2020, possibly as part of a Fellini box set.

I actually pre-ordered Polyester during the last B&N sale and they gave me the discount. The person in the movie section said no discount so I asked the girl at the front and she went and asked the manager and they gave me the discount. You never know what their policy is going to be on any given day, lol....

By the way, that is about the craziest music video I have ever seen....

Yeah, I was only 16 at the time. The theater was total chaos and anarchy. All they cared about was that you paid your way in at the ticket booth. It was a surreal experience before they even dimmed the lights. I had never seen anything like that movie before and had never even heard of Waters earlier films as I was too young. It definitely opened my mind and made me seek out films like Eraserhead, Evil Dead and whatever else I could find that was under the radar at the time.....

Not the perfect place to ask but damn near.

Can anyone help me with a Noir title? Starts off with 3 soldiers going to bar. They just returned from overseas I believe. Another patron of the bar plays music and one of the soldiers can't take it and a fight starts.

I think I watched it on the Criterion Channel. So, there is that to make this less a derailing of the thread. Thanks for any help
