He's still nowhere near as Boston mayor Thomas Menino:

Quote:
"There's a lot of heart in this team, let me just tell you," Menino told reporters, before adding, "KJ is great but Hondo is really the inspiration. Hondo drives that team."

KJ, of course, should be KG, Kevin Garnett. "KJ" was the nickname for former Phoenix Suns guard Kevin Johnson, who is currently the mayor of Sacramento. And "Hondo" was Celtics legend John Havlicek's nickname. Hondo hasn't graced the Boston parquet since 1978. Menino was referring to Celtics guard Rajon Rondo.

This is far from the first sports head-slapper Menino has been guilty of. When discussing the New England Patriots' chances in the playoffs against the Denver Broncos earlier this season, Menino talked about Tom Brady's weapons "Grabowski" (Rob Gronkowski) and "Wes Weckler" (Welker).

Menino's most infamous reference came in 2010 during the dedication of a statue to Bruins legend Bobby Orr's "ionic" goal to win the 1970 Stanley Cup. In discussing some of the best moments in Boston sports, Menino said it was Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek who "split the uprights" to win the Patriots' first Super Bowl in 2002. He was, of course, referring to kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Because it's not clear cut. Just people overvaluing the triple crown.

Trout was the best overall player in the league this year. There's not much anyone can say to the contrary.

because triple crowns happen so often right... People have great seasons every year like Trout, nothing new here.... But when was the last triple crown? Like 30 years ago.... Now that's something special....

No, people don't have great overall seasons like Trout had every year. What he did this year was historically great all while missing the first month of the season. Best outfielder in the league, second best rated baserunner, only player ever to hit 30 HR, steal 45 bases and score 125 runs. First 10+ WAR player since Bonds in 2004 and it's a cumulative stat on top of that. So sure, that 30-40-125 is kind of a random set, but avg, rbi and hr has become an archaic method for measurement of overall offensive value.

Again, who was a better overall player than Trout this year? Statistically, nobody was.

Trout was the best player in MLB this year, though I think WAR is slightly overstating his value. There is something weird going on with the park factor in Anaheim this year. Trout probably would have won the MVP (note: he has no shot at the actual MVP) if he had been an established player, but voters will reward Miguel for his decade of excellence, as much as for 2012 alone.

Depends on which statistics you use. Clearly he was not statistically better at HRs, RBIs or BA.

And every stat has it's own set of positive and negatives.

BA was very close between the two but my argument is simply that while Miggy was an elite hitter, Trout was an elite hitter, fielder and baserunner making him the best overall player in the league and therefore deserving of the MVP. Cabrera was excellent, but his triple crown wasn't a once in lifetime line. There have been several players with similar triple crown category stats who have not won the triple crown. Hence my statement that the triple crown is an amazing but overvalued achievement.

So overvalued that only 3-4 people have won it right, yup that's overvalued... let me guess next your going to say batting .400 is overvalued as well because 2 people have done that before the next person is able to do it. Cabrera was more valuable to his team then Trout was because of the distance Detroit went in the playoffs.

What Trout did was amazing don't get me wrong, but unless your damn near 65 years old this is also the first time you have ever seen someone win the triple crown outright as well. Keep in mind Trouts achievements wont be once in a lifetime, hes just the first person to do what he has done for that he should be recognized and by getting Rookie of the Year he will be.

Dude...Cabs and the T-Crown all the way. No one gives a sh*t about Trout's potential Gold Glove. It's all about hitting. Trout's a Great player but Yaz last won the T-C in '67...and yes, I remember it as I saw him play the following year in Detroit. (F*ck 49 seems old). Keep 'er Cool, Hat.
