Yeah, it's a smart move, it just seemed like he was a big enough part of the organization that you don't let him go. You find some sort of spot for him to do something. Like wash cleats or something.

Unrelated, today is Peter Gammons last day on ESPN. Aside from his obvious Red Sox-bias, he was an informative guy, but I'm sure he'll still be doing something baseball related, just not with ESPN.

Gammons is joining MLB Network and will write for MLB.com. From the sounds of it his role there will be identical to his ESPN job, although maybe not as many hours or columns.

Bay already turned down 4 years/$60 million from the Red Sox, so I doubt he's going to accept the Mets deal. He wants a 6-7 year deal and over $100 million. Maybe he's going to realize that isn't going to happen and take the 4 year deals he's being offered, because I don't know of anyone offering a longer deal.

He is not good enough to get a six-year deal. I bet he ends up back with the Red Sox. The Yankees trade has really affected the market for outfielders, because it lowers their need to get a top-notch outfielder in left.

Bay has said he'd definitely return to the Red Sox if the money is right. The Red Sox offered him the contract before free agency started and he wanted to see what he could get on the open market. So far the Mets are the only team that has offered him a contract since the start of free agency. The Angels and Mariners are going after him also. The Seattle papers say he'd love to play for the Mariners and might take a lesser contract from them because he's from British Columbia, which is just north of Seattle. Not sure if the Mariners want to pay the money to him though after giving $36 million to fellow outfielder Chloe Figgins.

That's what I thought would happen, and it's good to hear.

I'm surprised at how good MLB Network actually is. It's no NFL Network, but it's getting better. Plus my pal Harold Reynolds is on there, so I found myself watching their MLB-recap show more than Baseball Tonight this past year.

ESPN is reporting that John Lackey is taking a physical for the Red Sox and are currently working on a contract proposal. It wasn't believed the Red Sox were seriously interested in Lackey. If the Red Sox get Lackey the Angels will likely need to up their offer for Halladay because they need a big time starter.

Thanks for the news, I didn't know the Sox were going after Lackey. That'd be a real nice pick-up!

Major News

Roy Halladay is going to the Phillies in a 3 team trade. Right now all that is known is Cliff Lee is going to Seattle.

Also, Lackey has agreed to a 5 year deal for $82.5 million with the Red Sox.

Why would the Phils trade Lee when he was such a beast for them at the end of the season and into the playoffs? That one doesn't male much sense. Other than the fact that he want market value money to stay.

What Lee opinion of market value money and the Phillies opinion were apparently far apart. The Phillies didn't want to go into the season with an ace that is going to be a free agent so they decided to bring a third team into the mix. It was Halladay they wanted last year and didn't have the prospects to get him. Halladay is expected to sign an extension before the trade is completed.

Basically both pitchers want a long-term deal of mega-bucks. The Phillies would rather sign Halladay long-term, as he has a longer track record of proven superiority. Both pitchers are great right now, but only three years ago Cliff Lee had been demoted to the minors for a stretch.
