Sure, it makes it a 3 team race now in our division but I'm a baseball fan first and foremost and I just hate to see these type of deals happen. And yes there will always be teams like the Giants who were able to catch lightning in a bottle....no offense. The parity is just out of control.

Teams like Boston and NY will continue to pad their teams with pay-roll players until MLB puts in a salary cap, which I doubt will ever happen.

Some clarifications on the Jeter deal, though it's still pretty confusing.

He'll make, on average, $16m per year, for 3 years, which totals $48m.

After the third year is over, the Yankees can let him go for $3m, bringing his total take for 3 years up to $51 million.

Alternatively, they could pay to keep him for a 4th year, where his salary is based on points he acquires for achieving certain goals/stats throughout the 3 years of his contract. That could be worth as much as $17 million.

So 3 years for $51m, or 4 years for anywhere between $51m and $65m.

I'm not sure either. Maybe for their own peace of mind they threw in the extra $2m per year just to get things done in a reasonably timely manner, so they can focus on other acquisitions now (namely, Cliff Lee).

Cardinals signed first baseman-outfielder Lance Berkman, who had been with the Yankees, to a one-year contract.
This was a hot rumor all of a sudden, but Berkman still seemed like a more natural fit with the Athletics or Rockies. He figures to play right field for the Cardinals, with Allen Craig starting against the occasional lefty. That'll hurt the team's outfield defense, but if Berkman bounces back as hoped, he'll be a great fit in the lineup. Dec. 4 - 5:16 pm et

There isn't much to look at anymore. I'm glad the Jeter deal is now finalized. I knew he would end up in pinstripes it just took longer than expected. It's all business.

I don't think this is a bad deal for the Padres. Gonzalez is a free agent after next season and there was no way they could afford to keep him, and by trading him now they were able to get some great prospects. Casey Kelly is the Red Sox top prospect and though he struggled last season in Double-A he is still thought to have a very high ceiling. They are also getting high prospects in 21-year old first basemen Anthony Rizzo, Boston's third-ranked prospect, and 19-year old outfielder Reymond Fuentes, Boston's tenth-ranked prospect.

I think its a fair deal for everyone he gets a little more then he's worth and the franchise gets to keep him apart of it.

Yeah thats why I don't like the trade... Not to many NL guys can come to the AL and hit like they did. I was really upset Kelly, and Fuentes was involved in it

To me both those guys should have been untouchable. Right now I feel like the Padres swindled them.

The Red Sox couldn't agree to a contract extension with Adrian Gonzalez so the deal is off.

From mlbtraderumors-

Werth Agrees To Deal With Nationals

By Zach Links [December 5 at 3:47pm CST]

Free agent outfielder Jayson Werth has agreed to a deal with the Washington Nationals, sources tell Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (via Twitter). The deal is for seven years, according to Jon Heyman of SI (via Twitter). Werth signing with the Nats comes as a surprise, though the pairing does make sense. Washington had money available after losing Adam Dunn in free agency and has replaced the bopper's bat in the lineup.

It was said earlier this week that the most serious suitors for the 31-year-old were the Phillies, Tigers, and Red Sox. Boston met with Werth on Wednesday though contract terms were not discussed.

MLB.com's Todd Zolecki first reported that the two sides were nearing agreement.

Why go to the Nationals when you can go to Boston or Detroit? Regardless, I think the Phillies are going to miss him a lot next season.

It was probably the seven years that did it.

126 over 7 years is insane for Werth. I can't see how the Nats don't end up regretting this deal.

From steve839 over on the Nationals board-

"Look, I know the contract is awful, but the Nats need to overpay for major FA's to play here. It's simple economics."

Right, and as long as there is no salary cap and teams like the Yankee$*** and Red Sox get first dibs on free agents, it is either this way, or wait about ten more years for the draft picks to work out.
