After next year the Cubs will get rid of the horrible contracts of Aramis Ramirez ($14.6 million plus a $2 million buyout when they decline his option) and Kosuke Fukudome ($13.5 million), plus they have an option on Carlos Silva's contract that I'd expect them to decline. Sadly they don't get rid of Alfonso Soriano's $18 million per year contract until 2014 and Carlos Zambrano's over $18 million per year contract until 2012 or 2013 depending on whether he meets the vesting options. I don't see them being too successful until those contracts are off the books so you're probably right in your 3-4 year minimum estimate.

Rumors are that the Whitesox might also sign Konerko as well. Can you imagine the 1, 2 punch of Konerko and Dunn!

Yankees bumped up their offer for Jeter, but it's not known by how much, other than it's higher than the 3yr/$45m offer, and probably still not up to the 4-5 yrs, $23m per year that Jeter's agent asked for.

Hal Steinbrenner, "We don't know how happy they are. We'll see. There's no possible way anybody could criticize us for what we've offered."

The ball's back in Jeter's court (or field, or whatever).

Rivera is expected to agree to a 2-yr, $30 million deal later today (Friday). The Yankees were originally offering him a 1-yr deal for more than he made last year (he mad $15m in 2010), but I guess his agent was good enough to get 2-years from the Yankees, at his current rate.

John Heyman reports

Quote:
The Yankees will re-sign Mariano Rivera to a two-year, $30MM deal by tomorrow night, according to Christian Red of the New York Daily News. Rivera recently received a three-year offer worth more money from a rival team, but wanted to stay in pinstripes, even if it meant accepting a deal for fewer guaranteed years and less money. Agent Fernando Cuza confirmed that interested teams other than the Yankees have called about Rivera.

Jon Heyman of SI.com confirms that the Yankees are moving closer to a two-year deal with Rivera (all Twitter links). Heyman hears that the Red Sox and Angels were two of three teams that offered Rivera three-year deals.

Sad day as Cubs legend Ron Santo has died at age 70. Santo had diabetes which had caused him to get both legs amputated and other health problems. Santo played 14 years for the Cubs and had been their radio broadcaster since 1990. I loved listening to Cubs games mainly due to Santo. He wasn't a great announcer but he was enthusiastic and didn't even try to hide his Cubs bias, cheering when they did well and being angry when they did bad. Santo came close to the Hall of Fame many times but will likely be elected by the Veteran's Committee now, although he said he didn't want a posthumous induction.

Loved Santo as broadcaster. It was definitely not the norm but I didn't care because it showed how much Ron wanted the Cubs to win. He wore it during the broadcasts sometimes more than the fans. I always laughed when you could hear him in the background. It was a pleasure to hear him and he will be greatly missed. If there were two things we, as much as Ronny would have liked to see was him in the HOF and the Cubs win the World Series. Very sad day RIP Ronnie.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the White Sox will meet with Paul Konerko's representatives at next week's Winter Meetings.
The White Sox locked up Adam Dunn to a four-year, $56 million contract on Thursday, but they can always slide him to DH in order to make room for Konerko. The 34-year-old veteran has played 12 of his 13 major league seasons with the White Sox and registered a .312/.393/.584 batting line with 39 homers and 111 RBI over 548 at-bats in 2010. He's also drawn interest from the Orioles and Diamondbacks, but Chicago clearly has a better chance of contending in 2011 and for the foreseeable future. Dec. 3 - 11:38 am et

BOSTON -- The Red Sox offered reliever Mariano Rivera a two-year, $30 million deal and were prepared to non-tender closer Jonathan Papelbon, according to a baseball source with direct knowledge of the negotiations.

Rivera turned down the Red Sox to return to the Yankees, who offered the same money as Boston. Rivera's pending agreement with the Yankees was first reported by the New York Daily News.

Gordon Edes and the rest of the ESPNBoston.com team have the Red Sox covered for you. Blog
The Red Sox on Thursday night tendered a contract to Papelbon, who was paid $9.35 million last season and is arbitration-eligible, which will drive his salary into eight figures. Papelbon is a year away from free agency.

By any measure, the 30-year-old Papelbon had the worst season of his career in 2010. His 3.90 ERA was more than a full run higher than in any of his previous five seasons in the majors, and his eight blown saves were also a career high.

On Thursday night the Yankees and Rivera's agent, Fern Cuza, were putting the finishing touches on Rivera's contract.

"There are a lot of steps in the process, from agreeing to something in principle to getting the physical done," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday morning when asked if the Rivera deal was done. "Until all those things are covered, I'm not in a position to say."

The Yankees could announce that the deal is official as soon as Friday.

The Red Sox have bolstered their lineup. So I guess this means re-signing Beltre is out of the question, and they'll push Youkilis back to third.

Quote:
The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a deal in principle to acquire slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney on Saturday morning.

The Red Sox have received permission from Major League Baseball to negotiate with Gonzalez on a new contract, the sources said, and Gonzalez's physical examination, one of last hurdles to the deal, could happen Saturday, when Gonzalez was expected to be in Boston.

The Padres would not receive any established major league players in the trade, but it's likely the Red Sox would include their top pitching prospect, Casey Kelly, sources have said.

Gonzalez is the Padres' most popular player, with great crossover appeal to the team's Mexican-American market, a native son who carried San Diego to within a game of a playoff spot in 2010.

He is signed through 2011 at $6.3 million. The Padres exercised his 2011 option on Nov. 1. His contract called for a $5.5 million salary, but performance bonuses pushed the figure above $6 million.

Acquiring Gonzalez, while signing one of two free-agent outfielders, Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth, would give the Red Sox their most potent offensive lineup since the Manny Ramirez trade to the Dodgers in 2008 and make clear why they were willing to lose free agents Victor Martinez and potentially Adrian Beltre.

The Red Sox have long coveted the 28-year-old Gonzalez. As far back as the 2009 trading deadline, the Red Sox made a pitch for Gonzalez, a three-time All-Star who last season finished fourth in balloting for the National League's Most Valuable Player.

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound left-handed hitter batted .298 with 31 home runs and 101 RBIs for the Padres last season. He finished fifth in the National League in on-base percentage (.393), ninth in slugging (.511) and led the league in hitting with runners in scoring position (.407). Opposing pitchers issued 35 intentional walks to Gonzalez last season, a number exceeded only by Albert Pujols.

In addition to his offensive prowess, Gonzalez is a gifted defender, having won two Gold Gloves in five full seasons.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Yankees are finalizing a three-year contract with Derek Jeter that will pay the shortstop $15-17 million per season.
A fourth year is possible, but Rosenthal says it's not a vested option that has been reported. He refers to the fourth year as a "creative, hybrid" solution. He doesn't say how much the fourth year would be worth, but WFAN's Sweeny Murti has reported that it would be worth $10 million. Expect the contract to be completed soon. Dec. 4 - 10:29 am et

The rich teams keep getting richer and the poor teams continue to get poorer. Why are teams like the Padres even allowed to be in MLB? It's pathetic. MLB might as well just scrap half the teams because they are never going to be able to ever do shit in this day in age.
