What's funny is that he comes out saying that the samples were tampered with, when in reality, they samples arrives with all the tamper proof seals intact. If the seals were tampered with, that test would have been tossed right out. I can't wait to see the reception he gets when the Brewers got to visiting ballparks.

He's one of the luckiest athletes I've ever seen. He didn't just fail that drug test, he literally had like double the testosterone Manny had when he failed his test. And from all I've read there is no chance it was tampered with and the lag in time before the test was submitted for analysis had no impact on the test results. He just lucked out due to a technicality.

Technicality or not he's still guilty in the public eye I would imagine. It's gonna follow him for a long time.

Odd as it might sound I think this could benefit the Yankees. Their best years in recent memory were the late 90's-early 00's when a good portion of their team was homegrown through their farm system and payroll was not incredibly high.

Since that time the the elder Steinbrenner (now passed) made a lot of moves for high dollar free agents and trades where the team gave up good prospects for overpriced veterans that often didn't pan out. I think that showed. While they fielded really good teams they only won one championship post-2000, which is about the time they changed their strategy. So far this new strategy by the younger Steinbrenners of a more stable payroll seems to be working. They're developing young talent for the first time in years, yet they're still just as good on the field.

Hal Steinbrenner plans to lower payroll

The days of the bloated New York Yankees payrolls are numbered.

So said Hal Steinbrenner, the team's managing general partner and the younger son of the late George M. Steinbrenner III, who on Thursday confirmed what his general manager, Brian Cashman, has been saying all winter: that over the next two seasons, the Yankees' payroll would be drastically trimmed, all the way down to $189 million by the start of the 2014 season.

"I'm looking at it as a goal, but my goals are normally considered a requirement," Steinbrenner said. "Plenty of teams win without the kind of payrolls we have."

The reason, of course, is the luxury tax, into which the Yankees have paid more than 90 percent of the total collected by Major League Baseball since it was instituted in 2003 -- $206 million of the $227 million assessed to just four teams: the Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels.

All that crazyness of those huge contracts started in 2001 when they signed Jason Giambi (which turned out to be a bad contract). This is why Hal is running the day to day operations of the team and not Hank. I'm glad they are going this route.

I'm headed to a couple spring training games in Arizona next week. On Tuesday I'm going to a Cubs-Rockies game and on Wednesday I'm headed to a Diamondbacks-Indians game. I went to a Cubs spring training game last year and their facility is nothing special but they've got a new complex opening in 2014 that is going to be amazing. The Diamondbacks facility (which they share with the Rockies) looks very nice so I'm anxious to see a game there.

Bucs starter, A.J. Burnett out 2-3 months after having his broken orbital bone operated on. Kudos to A.J. for not hittin' the dirt after being hit with the ball (even though blood was pouring down off of his helmet brim). ...nails tough.

Me too. He seemed to be focused and anxious to be the Bucs Opening Day starter. We've both experienced the roller-coaster ride that is AJ Burnett.

Wonder what everyone thinks of the league adding one more wild card spot to each conference.

I'm all for the smaller market teams spending more money on players but does anyone really think Washington is spending wisely? They've thrown down $102 mill for Zimmerman and $126 mill for Werth. That's $228 mill on two decent, but not star players. Werth had a .232, 20 HR, 58 RBI 2011 season and Zimmerman went .289, 12 HR, 49 RBI in 101 games in 2011.
