Being rated R isn't gonna be worth a damn if the movie itself isn't actually, you know, GOOD.

just saying.

Blood, sex, and atleast a 120 minute runtime= good film. Sadly this is only 100 minutes.

I didnt realize that the cinematagrapher for the film is Ken Seng who did an excellent job with Step Up 3. I dont care for the Step Up movies but it was filmed gracefully and well put together which màde scenes very exciting.

Just got back!

The movie is amazing. Those hyped up reactions from the surprise screening last month? Wholly deserved.

Pros:
  • The movie is hilarious. It's not all gross out humor (though some of that is present), the movie is genuinely clever and witty. It has this "F it" attitude that is totally befitting of Deadpool.
  • The action is well done, engaging, and fun. The first big action scene (which comes about five minutes in; the movie starts with a bang and rarely slows down) had me a bit worried at first, because it was a lot of fast action where you couldn't see what exactly was going on (think the Dark Knight). I thought "I hope this isn't one of those movies where you can't tell what's going on during fights," but I believe this was the earliest stuff they shot.

As the movie went on, the action got better and better. The big fight in the end was the best. You could tell what was going on. That's not to say that the first action scene was bad; it felt a little "video game-y" at times, but then Deadpool starts cracking jokes and killing guys the way only Deadpool can, and it's a blast.
  • Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. He's comfortable and at home in that red suit. He's hilarious. He's more than just funny; he'll move, hop, skip, or gasp in a certain way that he's a whole, expressive character.
  • The movie had emotional scenes that I wasn't expecting. The movie is almost rapid fire jokes the whole time -- I say almost, because there are parts where the movie gets surprisingly human and emotionally real. Not really a spoiler, but just in case:
[Show spoiler]There's a scene where Wade is out in public and people start to notice his disfigurement,
and it's heartbreaking. Ryan isn't just a clown in this movie. He acts, and that part was huge because at the start of the movie (in the pre-Deadpool origin), you kind of don't like this guy a little bit. He's actually kind of unlikable (at least, he was to me), and I really respect the filmmakers and the studio to have THIS guy be the protagonist of their movie.

They outright show and tell you he's not a good guy... he's just not as bad as the badder guys. It doesn't last long, though -- even though the movie says repeatedly "this guy isn't a hero" (and Deadpool says it himself), you do like him and root for him and he for all his selfish motivations, you're empathetic to him and he's very much likable.

And for every bad thing Deadpool does... it's hilarious. He encourages murder. He's an off-the-leash, unhinged, kind of crazy guy with a penchant for violence and you're cheering him on almost the whole time! It's amazing. It's like the Hit Girl scenes from Kick-Ass on crack. It's wild, and fun. Hard to see any movie this year being as straight up fun as Deadpool.
  • The movie is a good time. My audience was really into it. You could chalk that up to it being a pre-screening for an anticipated movie, but it seemed like everyone was really into it. Lots of huge laughs and big reactions at the proper times.

Cons:
  • I actually didn't think T.J. Miller was very funny. I think he only got me to laugh twice, once which was when he referenced
    [Show spoiler]Blade II
. His character also wasn't a good friend or very likable, and considering his job, that makes sense. But a lot of his stuff didn't work for me. I like Miller and would like him to be in a sequel, but I didn't find Weasel very funny. Most of his stuff is in the trailers.
  • Which leads to my next point: before the movie came out, some of us speculated that some of the jokes in the trailer wouldn't be used in the actual movie. ("Less angry Rosie O'Donnell," the avocado joke, the brown pants joke, etc). There were some bits in the trailers that were in the movie that were still funny, but I was hoping they would have used alternate jokes/takes in the movie because we've seen those same jokes over and over in TV spots and trailers. But the thing is... the funniest stuff in the movie? Not in a single trailer. They saved all the best stuff for the actual movie! That never happens. So this point might as well be moot.
  • There was a sex montage that I felt was kind of unnecessary, although there's one big joke in the middle of it that did work and made me laugh. So, again, not much of a point.
  • If you're a Colossus fan, you might not like how he's used in this movie. He's kind of treated like a chump/joke, but for me, it worked. He's played for laughs, and it's both funny and charming when
[Show spoiler]Angel Dust has a nip slip and Colossus gets nervous and, like a gentleman, gives her a moment to cover up
. He's not it in much, but when he is, he's used well.
  • The movie ended.

I don't really have anything negative to say other than "some stale jokes were left in" (not the movie's fault) and that T.J. Miller wasn't as funny as I thought he would be. That's it.

If you like the advertising materials, you'll like the movie. If not, it might not be for you, especially if you don't like raunchy movies. It earns its R rating. This has to be one of the purest adaptations of any character ever to hit a movie. The movie is just fun. Right from the opening credits -- which are actually one of the best parts of the movie -- it sets the tone and tells you what you're in for, which is a damn good time. Rarely is a movie this hilarious and enjoyable.

I saw it for free, and I'll be paying to see this a few times in the theater to support it.

4.5/5

PS: I'll answer questions if anyone has any, though I won't give away any of the movie's biggest secrets and all of my answers will be spoiler tagged.

Also, a lady brought two kids, the boy was maybe 2 or 3 and the girl looked 5 or 6. I wouldn't recommend bringing kids to this, but only you know what your kids can and can't handle. I don't judge and it's not my place to say.

Not only does the movie have a lot of violence, gore, sexual references, and nudity, but there's a
[Show spoiler]torture
sequence followed by a scene where
[Show spoiler]Wade gets his scars
that could be downright scary to young kids. Wade even says
[Show spoiler] "this is a horror movie"
at one point and I could see younger kids having nightmares.

I know there are some younger Deadpool fans, so if any parents want to know how "bad" the movie is so you can determine whether or not you should bring kids, I give details below. I avoid real spoilers, but I do go into some specifics.

Violence:

[Show spoiler]There's plenty of gore. People get shot, decapitated, run through with swords, run over, etc, all with blood and realistic results. At one point, Deadpool saws off his hand and blood squirts out.

Wade undergoes various torturous procedures. At one point, he gets put into a tube that basically suffocates him and causes his body to develop his scarred appearance. A lot of people could find this to be horrific and grotesque, and I could see it scaring younger kids.

Sex/nudity:

[Show spoiler]Wade shows his bare butt a few times. He also takes off a sweater (he's not wearing pants) and is fully naked, but crotch area isn't shown.

Vanessa is shown naked on top of Wade, you see some of her breasts but they're mostly covered by Wade's hands. There's a sex montage that shows the couple in various positions.

Strip club sequence that has about six topless strippers. One stripper is fully nude. The club is kind of dark and has pink/purple lights and it's brief, but at least one woman was fully nude.

After Wade's scarring, he's nude while he fights Ajax. His crotch isn't really shown, as it's concealed in the dark, but you do see bare butt. He gets tossed around during the fight while naked, so you might see "glimpses," but I wasn't looking.

Various sexual references and terms that could be considered crude. Younger kids won't get the innuendos but a lot of stuff is outright stated.

If Deadpool is "kid friendly" is entirely up to you, just thought details might help a parent decide what's best for them and their kid(s).
