I really hope the avocado scene is trimmed down in the film. That way it is in the trailer it's like one of those obvious improv scenes that go on longer then needed with the actor just doing variations of the same joke.

It takes me out of the movie when improv becomes too obvious. Hopefully TJ Miller isn't like that the entire time or else he's going to quickly irritate the **** out of me.

With the avocado joke, everything from the trailer makes it in and he actually goes a little bit further. He adds
[Show spoiler] [paraphrasing] that it looks like the avocados have "hate sex," because it's the only way the "relationship doesn't turn to violence."
It did seem improvised.

He wasn't like that the entire time. Most of his jokes are one liners, and he's not a major part of the movie anyway, so you should be good.

Pros:
  • The movie is hilarious. It's not all gross out humor (though some of that is present), the movie is genuinely clever and witty. It has this "F it" attitude that is totally befitting of Deadpool.
  • The action is well done, engaging, and fun. The first big action scene (which comes about five minutes in; the movie starts with a bang and rarely slows down) had me a bit worried at first, because it was a lot of fast action where you couldn't see what exactly was going on (think the Dark Knight). I thought "I hope this isn't one of those movies where you can't tell what's going on during fights," but I believe this was the earliest stuff they shot.

As the movie went on, the action got better and better. The big fight in the end was the best. You could tell what was going on. That's not to say that the first action scene was bad; it felt a little "video game-y" at times, but then Deadpool starts cracking jokes and killing guys the way only Deadpool can, and it's a blast.
  • Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. He's comfortable and at home in that red suit. He's hilarious. He's more than just funny; he'll move, hop, skip, or gasp in a certain way that he's a whole, expressive character.
  • The movie had emotional scenes that I wasn't expecting. The movie is almost rapid fire jokes the whole time -- I say almost, because there are parts where the movie gets surprisingly human and emotionally real. Not really a spoiler, but just in case:
[Show spoiler]There's a scene where Wade is out in public and people start to notice his disfigurement,
and it's heartbreaking. Ryan isn't just a clown in this movie. He acts, and that part was huge because at the start of the movie (in the pre-Deadpool origin), you kind of don't like this guy a little bit. He's actually kind of unlikable (at least, he was to me), and I really respect the filmmakers and the studio to have THIS guy be the protagonist of their movie.

They outright show and tell you he's not a good guy... he's just not as bad as the badder guys. It doesn't last long, though -- even though the movie says repeatedly "this guy isn't a hero" (and Deadpool says it himself), you do like him and root for him and he for all his selfish motivations, you're empathetic to him and he's very much likable.

And for every bad thing Deadpool does... it's hilarious. He encourages murder. He's an off-the-leash, unhinged, kind of crazy guy with a penchant for violence and you're cheering him on almost the whole time! It's amazing. It's like the Hit Girl scenes from Kick-Ass on crack. It's wild, and fun. Hard to see any movie this year being as straight up fun as Deadpool.
  • The movie is a good time. My audience was really into it. You could chalk that up to it being a pre-screening for an anticipated movie, but it seemed like everyone was really into it. Lots of huge laughs and big reactions at the proper times.

Cons:
  • I actually didn't think T.J. Miller was very funny. I think he only got me to laugh twice, once which was when he referenced
    [Show spoiler]Blade II
. His character also wasn't a good friend or very likable, and considering his job, that makes sense. But a lot of his stuff didn't work for me. I like Miller and would like him to be in a sequel, but I didn't find Weasel very funny. Most of his stuff is in the trailers.
  • Which leads to my next point: before the movie came out, some of us speculated that some of the jokes in the trailer wouldn't be used in the actual movie. ("Less angry Rosie O'Donnell," the avocado joke, the brown pants joke, etc). There were some bits in the trailers that were in the movie that were still funny, but I was hoping they would have used alternate jokes/takes in the movie because we've seen those same jokes over and over in TV spots and trailers. But the thing is... the funniest stuff in the movie? Not in a single trailer. They saved all the best stuff for the actual movie! That never happens. So this point might as well be moot.
  • There was a sex montage that I felt was kind of unnecessary, although there's one big joke in the middle of it that did work and made me laugh. So, again, not much of a point.
  • If you're a Colossus fan, you might not like how he's used in this movie. He's kind of treated like a chump/joke, but for me, it worked. He's played for laughs, and it's both funny and charming when
[Show spoiler]Angel Dust has a nip slip and Colossus gets nervous and, like a gentleman, gives her a moment to cover up
. He's not it in much, but when he is, he's used well.
  • The movie ended.

I don't really have anything negative to say other than "some stale jokes were left in" (not the movie's fault) and that T.J. Miller wasn't as funny as I thought he would be. That's it.

If you like the advertising materials, you'll like the movie. If not, it might not be for you, especially if you don't like raunchy movies. It earns its R rating. This has to be one of the purest adaptations of any character ever to hit a movie. The movie is just fun. Right from the opening credits -- which are actually one of the best parts of the movie -- it sets the tone and tells you what you're in for, which is a damn good time. Rarely is a movie this hilarious and enjoyable.

I saw it for free, and I'll be paying to see this a few times in the theater to support it.

4.5/5

PS: I'll answer questions if anyone has any, though I won't give away any of the movie's biggest secrets and all of my answers will be spoiler tagged.

DisneyBlu, thanks for the spoilerless review. I'm probably not going to see this in the theaters, because I can't take my son to it, but I'd like to know one spoiler, if you please....

Who was the cameo? Was it an X-Man other than Colossus? Wolverine perhaps?

Don't forget the spoiler brackets, or if you feel uncomfortable posting it at all, I'd appreciate a PM. Thanks.

Not only does the movie have a lot of violence, gore, sexual references, and nudity, but there's a
[Show spoiler]torture
sequence followed by a scene where
[Show spoiler]Wade gets his scars
that could be downright scary to young kids. Wade even says
[Show spoiler] "this is a horror movie"
at one point and I could see younger kids having nightmares.

I know there are some younger Deadpool fans, so if any parents want to know how "bad" the movie is so you can determine whether or not you should bring kids, I give details below. I avoid real spoilers, but I do go into some specifics.

Violence:

[Show spoiler]There's plenty of gore. People get shot, decapitated, run through with swords, run over, etc, all with blood and realistic results. At one point, Deadpool saws off his hand and blood squirts out.

Wade undergoes various torturous procedures. At one point, he gets put into a tube that basically suffocates him and causes his body to develop his scarred appearance. A lot of people could find this to be horrific and grotesque, and I could see it scaring younger kids.

Sex/nudity:

[Show spoiler]Wade shows his bare butt a few times. He also takes off a sweater (he's not wearing pants) and is fully naked, but crotch area isn't shown.

Vanessa is shown naked on top of Wade, you see some of her breasts but they're mostly covered by Wade's hands. There's a sex montage that shows the couple in various positions.

Strip club sequence that has about six topless strippers. One stripper is fully nude. The club is kind of dark and has pink/purple lights and it's brief, but at least one woman was fully nude.

After Wade's scarring, he's nude while he fights Ajax. His crotch isn't really shown, as it's concealed in the dark, but you do see bare butt. He gets tossed around during the fight while naked, so you might see "glimpses," but I wasn't looking.

Various sexual references and terms that could be considered crude. Younger kids won't get the innuendos but a lot of stuff is outright stated.

If Deadpool is "kid friendly" is entirely up to you, just thought details might help a parent decide what's best for them and their kid(s).

First off, thank you for this review, it has settled some of my worries and gotten me legitimately excited for the film. However, I would like to ask a question regarding the overall look of the cinematography. One of my biggest annoyances with recent Superhero films (especially those from the MCU) is the TV-ish, bland look of the cinematography and composition. For me, it doesn't feel like a film anymore, more like a Television episode. How does Deadpool fare in this aspect? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reassurance. The marketing has been so good for this movie, I was afraid the movie wasn't going to live up to the hype in the funny department.

I didn't have any problems with the cinematography and it never felt TV-ish. During the first major action sequence (with the cars on the bridge that's been seen in every TV spot and trailer), there were some parts that looked "video game-y," and part of that was due to the CGI. The CGI didn't always look great, but a lot of the action was so fast that you barely notice.

I had no problems with the composition, which surprised me considering this is Tim Miller's first movie. It was actually during the strip club scene where I remember thinking the movie looked nice because of the use of colors.

Not to spoil anything, but even the opening credits are amazing and well done, and are far above anything you'd see on TV. Even The Avengers felt "TV-ish" at times, but Deadpool looks and feels cinematic. I was never taken out of the movie by the cinematography or the composition.

Spoilers.

[Show spoiler]The only cameo (aside from creator Rob Liefield at the bar at one point) is Stan Lee. Hugh Jackman/Wolverine isn't in the movie, but at one point Deadpool takes off his mask to reveal Hugh Jackman's face (he cut it out of a magazine and stapled it to his face). No other X-Men besides Colossus and Teenage Negasonic Warhead appear, but a couple are mentioned.

[Show spoiler]Not that I remember, and I would have caught it. There was a subtle MCU reference, though. At one point Deadpool talks about a group of superheroes crossing over and it's clear he's talking about the Avengers.

Stapled!?! LOL! That's great!

One more question please. Is anything about X-Men Origins: Wolverine referenced? Is the Weapon X program still involved in making Deadpool in any way?

That may have been it.
[Show spoiler]A popular critic/blogger mentioned the nod or joke about Feige. Since he is pretty much the mastermind behind the MCU working out I guess that would have been a bit of the nod.

[Show spoiler]Wade has an action figure that's "Deadpool" as he appears in X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

There's also a part where Wade is talking and Ajax says he should "sew his mouth shut."

IIRC, they briefly make a vague mention of Wade's past as a soldier, but when we meet him he's just a for-hire mercenary. They never outright mention Weapon X. A recruiter comes to him after he has cancer, offers him "we can make you a superhero," and then Ajax subjects him to all these "stress tests" (torture) to force a mutation. They make it very clear this isn't the same "Deadpool" as in Origins, because the origin is entirely different (and much, much better).

My review:

Quote:
Is it good?
Sadly, no.

What?! But the trailers look great! And all those videos and billboards! They're hilarious!
That's called good marketing. Unfortunately, it isn't indicative of the quality of the actual film. I mean, you could already kind of tell from the countless trailers they've released. They all show the same scenes—that's because there isn't much in the movie to choose from. Why couldn't they make the movie more like this? The marketing guys should've made this movie.

But, Ryan Reynolds promised it will make fanboys proud! He promised it won't be another Green Lantern!
Yeah, I wouldn't take the word of anyone involved. Heck, even James Cameron does it every time.

But I'm getting a Kingsman and Kick-Ass vibe from this, and those movies were really good...
I like Kingsman and I love Kick-Ass. Deadpool is not nearly as witty nor as violent as those two. Not even close. You'd think fans of Kingsman and Kick-Ass would enjoy Deadpool, but odds are if you like those two, Deadpool will leave you unimpressed.

That's... disappointing to hear. Well, is there anything good in this?
The clever opening credits and the freeway scene. You know a movie blows if its highlights are a shot-for-shot remake of old test footage leaked on YouTube years ago and the freaking opening credits.

What's not so good?
(1) It's a love story. Even Deadpool himself tells the audience this in the beginning. It's not a superhero movie. It's not an anti-hero movie. Deadpool is a love story. "Oh, you came to see Deadpool? You came to see a superhero movie? Sorry, guys, here's a rom-com, with some occasional, uninspired action." It's like a giant "F*** you" to the people they suckered into buying a ticket. I came to see Deadpool. Give me Deadpool. No bullshit. It's as simple as that. Can't do it? Leave the property alone. (2) It's yet another origin story, and an uninteresting one at that. As if we're not sick and tired of origin stories already. (3) It's just not funny. I'd post quotes, but I couldn't even recall a single one. Who in the f*** is responsible for this? *checks IMDb* Oh, it's the guys behind G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Cruel Intentions 3. Of course. (4) The villains, played by Ed Skrein and Gina Carano, are one-dimensional and forgettable. But, hey, even Disney and Marvel are having trouble putting memorable foes into their movies, so I'll give them a pass for that. (5) The final battle is... blah. They blow their load too early with the freeway scene. Actually, they blew their load a couple of years ago. (6) Deadpool is not Deadpool. I was hoping Deadpool would realize he's in a shitty Deadpool movie and break out of it at the end and do Deadpool things to the Deadpool filmmakers and/or villain responsible, but no, the Deadpool in Deadpool accepts being in a mediocre, by-the-numbers superhero origin movie. That Deadpool is not Deadpool. That's... Fakepool. (7) Rated R for graphic nudity, but none from Morena Baccarin?! Yup, this is a fail.

What's the verdict?
I don't know what this movie's biggest sin is: that they constrained Deadpool by walls and forced him to adhere to a formula rather than let him roam freely on a sandbox and do whatever the f*** he wants; that they hired actual screenwriters and an actual director to make a steaming pile of crap instead of those geniuses at marketing who seem to get what Deadpool is all about; or that Fox f***ed Deadpool up twice. Sorry, fanboys, it's Fantastic Four all over again. Pass.

The Scorecard:
Direction:
Acting: ½
Writing:
Editing: ½
Visuals:
Sound: ½

jvince hated it, we get it but why does he keep re-posting his review? All that's really doing is annoying other people.
