Deadpool's Script is walking the line between a PG-13 and an R rating

Source

Quote:
When Ryan Reynolds isn't talking about Green Lantern, he's discussing Deadpool. (Thankfully, that doesn't leave much time for him to open up about Hannibal King these days.) And the latest on the planned Merc with a Mouth film adaptation, as per Reynolds, is that it will be "hardcore."

In what amounts to the online version of a human centipede, io9 is reporting that fan site RyanReynoldsFan.net is reporting that
Total Film is reporting that the actor said the following:

"The script is going to be a little harder [than the comic]. If you were going to assign a rating, the comic books are PG-13, the script right now is walking a tightrope between that and an R-rating."

But… IGN's man on the scene, Dan Iverson, has given us a real nerdy heads up (his words) that, strictly speaking, Reynolds is wrong and there actually is a mature Deadpool title on the stands right now -- it just debuted a couple of weeks ago, in fact.

Hope it's true and actually hits the R.

If the script they want can be done with a PG-13 rating without changing anything, fine. I hate to sounds pessimistic, but I bet we are looking at a single film and not a franchise so I just want the best possible DP movie. If they decided to tone it down slightly to lower the rating to make money for sequels, I would be fine with that.

I guess I agree. I mean I'd be mad but they'd still get my money both in the theater and then the BD ,

I'd still consider the comics R to be honest, but that's just me. They're just really over the top and violent, it's wonderful

So long as they don't neuter the character/film, I can accept little changes.
If Deadpool wastes a room full of people with his auto rifles and we don't get buckets of blood, that is fine. If Deadpool gets his arm cut off by Wolverine in an awesome showdown cameo and we don't get blood spurting out everywhere ... well that is fine by me

It would be funny if Deadpool tries to say the F word but gets censored and he makes note of it.

I would actually love to see a scene of him trying to swear and he keeps getting censored I would laugh so hard

Agreed. This really must be R but I will still see it opening weekend if it is PG-13 because hey it's Deadpool how can I not.

This! I want this!

I still don't think this NEEDS to be R.

Taking from Vegeta's example, we don't need buckets of blood from his fights to make the movie better. I just don't get the logic that if there's not a lot of blood and guts it isn't good.

They can still be the true to the character and have a PG-13 movie. They are not mutually exclusive

I say, since its pretty likely that this will be PG-13, he should have a scene where he kills a bunch of people, and comments on the lack of blood

I guess my reasoning is that when I think of the character, I think of violence and blood, kind of like The Punisher. I can't think of The Punisher without blood It doesn't have to be Kill Bill amounts of blood, but I'd definitely like at least some blood. Not a super excessive R, but an R rating none the less would be interesting I think. I'll still see the movie none the less, as long as its done well and does the character justice

That would be a good way for them to break the fourth wall.

A lot of the stuff Deadpool is centered on is PG13 at worst. There is some stuff which is hard-R type material, but it's not the first thing most people think of when considering Deadpool as a character. When asked who is Deadpool, a fan will respond "a funny fourth-wall-breaking masked mercenary who is insane", not "BLOODY CARNAGE BLOODY CARNAGE BLOODY CARNAGE BLOODY CARNAGE CURSING CURSING NUDITY".

For example, this page is often marched out as an example of Deadpool. That would probably be PG at most.

In fact, we've already seen a good PG-13 take on the character in Hulk Vs. Wolverine. Take a characterization like that, add Ryan Reynolds, mix in some fourth wall breaking, and I'd be happy with it.

And hey, he might always break the fourth wall to point out that any carnage is bloodless ("Hey, I just impaled that guy, where's the fountains of blood like in Kill Bill?!"). To complain at the audience about him being neutered for a PG-13 rating would be pretty funny.

Scott Pilgrim did a joke kind of like this. But yeah, that would be pretty funny for Deadpool.

Here is how I see it. A Deadpool movie has the potential to be R or PG-13. I want the best movie, regardless of rating. I do not want them to cut out great bits or add stuff to make it a different rating.

I think a great PG-13 Deadpool is a possibility. There is no denying that there is plenty of cursing, violence, and mayhem within the source material, but are those things necessary? I do not know.Since it is almost a guaranteed PG-13, we will find out.

Either way, I will be there opening night.

Sorry guys, but Deadpool moaning about the film being PG-13 seems to be like rubbing salt in too a deep wound, it comes off slightly patronizing and how they WANTED it to be R rated but couldn't, so they moan in their own movie about

You could take it that way. I would see it (especially if worded right) as a jab right at Fox if say Deadpool mentions it directly about executives and gives a thumbs up directly into the camera. Maybe that's just me, but I would find it as a slight compensation.

I just want this movie to be made. Please! The script sounds fantastic and Ryan Reynolds is the perfect Deadpool.

If he doesn't end up doing it because of RIPD or The Green Lantern, I'm going to boycott his movies!!

PG-13 is fine with me as well. I don't think of Deadpool in the same vein of the Punisher, it is more comedic. It's hard to think of any character that sings "Barbie Girl" out loud while waiting to snipe someone as being overly dramatic and/or serious.
