regardless, i thought the "cartoon" eyes on Deadpool's mask worked perfectly for this character in this movie.

Isn't it James Purefoy who's under the mask for much of it?

Actually no, he only did a couple of weeks shooting and then walked because he said that he couldn't emote behind the mask, so hugo stepped in....

Without your face, there's still a good 90% of your body left to emote with, and you can still tilt your head, shake your head, etc. to get some body language out of it even with a mask.

I think it's clear Agent Elrond Smith understood this basic physiological concept.

WTF is Utah’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control? Click here for full story.

Quote:
Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds donated $5,000 toward a legal defense fund started by a Salt Lake City movie theater and pub that screened the Marvel film, which contains explicit content that state officials say violate Utah liquor laws that forbid serving alcohol during films with simulated sex scenes.

Three undercover agents filed a complaint against Brewvies Cinema Pub after going to see the film there in February.

Utah’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (DABC) “has threatened to fine us or suspend or revoke our liquor license, just for showing R-rated films like Deadpool, Hangover 2, Magic Mike XXL and Ted 2,” the movie house claims on a crowd-funding site. “The money that we are raising will go towards a legal defense fund to be used for legal fees seeking an injunction against the enforcement of a statute that violates our freedom of speech.”

So they violated the law, got caught, and didn't expect any repercussions?

A truly ridiculous law. I had no idea that the Mormon influence in Utah was so vast.

I doubt the willfully broke it, if they were even aware of it.

It's a completely nonsensical law based in religious dogma that has no place in government to begin with.

While yes, it's ridiculous, it's still the law. Ignorance isn't a defense unfortunately.

it's not necessarily ignorance to now account for all of the obscure ways that they might interpret a law.

Utah most likely concocted this law as a way to crack down on "adult" theaters and venues. My guess is that it's actually a law meant to cripple strip clubs, there are similar laws in other conservative states for that reason.

Why would the owner of a movie theater, that shows normal mass release movies, think for even a second that it would be used against them?

Damn, Deadpool was just 9 million dollars away from passing Passion of Christ as number 1 R-rated film.

The key part of the law that matters is the word "simulated", without any qualifications about the intent of the simulation. Simply the act of "simulating" a sex act qualifies, regardless of the context, which I think is the law's primary weakness.

If the law was rewritten to indicate that the simulation must be part of a work where the intent is to portray sexual acts ("You know it when you see it"), or exclude works that receive even limited theatrical release, then I wouldn't have nearly the same gripes with it as it would still serve the intended purpose (even if I disagree with that purpose) while excluding common entertainment from the law.

The Utah DABC controls the sale of every ounce of alcohol in Utah, including all liquor, wine, beer, flavored drinks, and other various spirits. Licenses to sell alcohol in restaurants or other establishments are rationed out proportional to local populations (e.g. if there's 10,000 people in a given area, then only X number of licenses can be granted, period, until either population increases or a business holding a license goes out of business or loses their license due to violation of law). Further, there are numerous regulations, such as the "Zion Curtain", the sexual acts law that Brewvies is currently dealing with, the 3.2% ABV beer law, and others. Finally, unless you're snagging 3.2% beer (which is disallowed for sale after 1 AM), liquor stores close either at 7 PM or 10 PM, and don't even open on Sunday, so if you don't plan ahead, you're just out of luck that day.

There is the occasional blip of progress, as seen with Starbucks recently getting a new kind of license approved which skirts around some of the population controls, but overall it's annoying to be a drinker in Utah.

Just watched that 2 days ago, and in the end, it seems simply like a nicely trashier and often gratuitously cruder (a lot of swearing is off-putting, written and said in a way that makes it sound as if they’re swearing just because they can) Ant Man. It’s rather fun, light and OKish in terms of pace, but it’s not a revolution and not even very memorable.

The biggest issue of the movie is its lack of action, with the main section being painfully spread on 50 minutes of movie. It’s well done, funny, refreshing, but 50 min ? Was it really necessary to split also the adrenaline of the sequence and to do pointless back-and-forth in the chronology of events ? It seemed overdone. The movie also certainly isn’t helped by an OST completely dull, seemingly more interested by sounding like a Beat It riff than to support the on-screen action dynamically.

Finally, my main concern is that the movie end up being your usual super-hero movie except for 2 sole things : the meta sense of humor which gives the movie a refreshing sense of freedom of tone (I thought a bit of what South Park is sometimes doing), and the 4th wall break (despite this gimmick being quickly over-used). But there was so much more that could have been done stylistically speaking, and it’s hard not to think of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim and how it was much more elaborated and wild in terms of adapting with style a comic book. In Deadpool, past the 4th wall, a few meta jokes (the seemingly almost-unhabited Xavier Foundation is a good one, but also a painful reminder of how Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead are poorly included in the script) and a small surprise at the end of the movie, in the end, the visual treatment is very generic.

The overall look of the movie, despite feeling very digital, also felt better than some of the most recent Marvel movies, and it’s nice not to have the impression 99% of it was shot in a cheap Bulgarian warehouse for once.

This being written, it’s only 1h40, time flies by rather well, it’s funny and entertaining, far from the elephants that are Thor 2, Iron Man 3 or even worse Age of Ultron.

7.5/10
