Seriously though, why would you want a new viewer to slog through six hours of crap before getting to the first good movie in the franchise?
They may be crap to you and some others, just as they are great to me and also some others.

let the person decide for themselves if they are good or not!

1-6 is the ONLY true intended way to watch these... that is why they are

The production order is the proper way to see it, especially for a newcomer. It's not like the movies came on a single 12-hour VHS tape, you know.

Perhaps if 15 years weren't long enough to have the reality that the PT failed at each and every turn sink in for you yet, it won't happen. But at least I can try to save bunkz323 from having the franchise ruined for him before even getting to the OT films.

I'm just so thankful I was born in the 90's and m first experience with Star Was was the 97 Theatrical re-release of the OT. Seeing Empire after ANH and having no idea of what was coming at the end... is an experience I will never forget. So epic

I kinda feel bad for bunkz323, here he is about to discover these movies and seems excited about it, he asks which order to watch them in and it instantly leads to the usual old arguments. Well... welcome to the Star Wars fandom, this is what it's like.

I think the Vader reveal is likely ruined regardless. Even if he hasn't seen the movies before, unless he's been living under a rock, odds are he's at least aware of Vader's true identity. And even if he wasn't, odds are this thread ruined that for him anyway.

I don't think that there's necessarily a wrong way to watch them at this point.

If he has access to the non-anamorpic DVDs from a few years back of the theatrical versions (which I doubt), I personally would recommend:

4-6, original theatrical versions, followed by:
1-6 on Blu-Ray.

How? Nothing in the new exchange gives the reveal away.

I think you should experiment with a new approach to watching these movies.

Get six small pieces of paper, put a different SW episode number on each piece. Fold them up, and put them in a hat or bowl.

Randomly draw one out. Watch whatever episode is written on that piece of paper. Then repeat that process until you've watch all of the movies!

If I'm in a mood to do a full SW saga runthrough - which isn't all that often these days - then that's the order that I use (although I watch the 2004 DVD of Jedi rather than the Blu-ray, the latest changes are just too goofy). That way you get to experience the films in release order, preserving any surprises, and still get to finish off the saga with the creator's preferred versions* of 4-6 with all the retcons in place.

*depending on which way the wind blows

I can see Kathleen Kennedy making an announcement @ Celebration Anahiem.

Where she says:

"In keeping with Lucas's tradition of further expanding the Saga by adding new additions we have decided to add some editions of our own namely":

1)Jar Jar Binks will be CGI'D in for Ep: (5, 6.)
2)We have inserted ewoks into the background in (EP:4)
3)Vocally added a NOOOO! that the Emperor will now speak when he is hoisted to his doom.
4)Vader's lightsaber will have a bright pink hue and white hot cores throughout the OT (to keep it consistent through each film).

Why do you have to start an argument when someone states that they like a certain film?

While I don't agree with him completely (Peter Jackson, etc.), I basically think he has got something, and I have been saying some of these things for years now: Prequels being way more complex and interesting than the OT, etc..

I have also said that the prequels are lightyears beyond most other movies being made these days, and that the OT fans weren't/aren't the target group.

These films were made for people, who can enjoy this vast galaxy, and their inner child is still fully present.

That's the main problem I think.: People have lost their inner child along the way (during that 16 year wait), and basically blame George Lucas for it.

I, for one, am glad that mine is still well and kicking.

May the Force be with you.

It somehow reminded me of that unbelievably poetic customer review of AOTC many years ago. I would love to find it again, but it would take so long among all the other junk.

You talk of the movies being more complex and yet also say that people have lost their inner child....the inner child who loves trade disputes and the Machiavellian plotting of Palpatine, I presume? Lucas tried his hand at creating this dense, sprawling generational story about how a democracy turns into a dictatorship and I applaud him for that (although it took the amazing Clone Wars S6 to fill in all the goddamned gaps nearly 10 years later), but he also tried to make it appeal to 5 year olds at the same time so it feels like the cinematic equivalent of oil and water; it just doesn't mix.

Why not, older cartoons were mulch-faceted?
Good for children and with plenty of things only adults would catch!

That's fine for a 20 minute cartoon, not for 2+ hours. And it's not like the PT is some rip-roaring adventure that's filled with these sly things that go right over kid's heads and adults can nod along with a smirk, we're talking entire sections where the momentum of the movie grinds to a halt so people can have a parliamentary debate. That's what every kid dreams of, I'm sure.

Look, I really do like a lot of aspects of the prequels but I'm not blind to their faults. I've said this before: sometimes I'll be thinking about the PT and make some thematic connection or other between them or the OT and go 'woah, that's cool', but when I'm actually watching them I sometimes feel like punching myself in the face because the half-assed writing (in terms of both plotting and dialogue) and awful acting drag it down so much, Attack of the Clones in particular. I love the action beats in Phantom Menace and I happen to think Sith is a better film than Jedi, but man, Clones sucks the big one.

People don't seem to have too much trouble enjoying talking raccoons or watching the Hulk smash the hell out of Loki so maybe the main problem here isn't the viewers.

Maybe the main problem is simpler than that. Maybe the movies just aren't very good.
