A lot of the UOT speculation is just that, a minority of rabid fans who can't leave it alone, not a major corporation moving on like Disney is. The future of Star Wars (read Ca$h) is in the new, not the old. 1977 was a long time a go, in a galaxy far far away. The new generation of Star Wars fans are about to come into the fold and don't care about changes made to a very, very old film they will see as part of a much larger set of new and shiny films.
I don't think it'd be disrespectful to Lucas to release the UOT at all, that would be if they released the UOT on its own, let the box sets containing the Special Editions go out of print and then never reissued them again, ever. But we know they aren't going to do that. The different cuts can co-exist, and personally I'd prefer to have both sets of versions in my collection.

Yes, an a la Blade Runner set for each film would be great!
(although only the original films would be played by me! )

But is Kathleen Kennedy as head of lucasfilm ever going to let it happen and dump on her long term friend, Mr. George Lucas. Remember that he hand picked her for the job, aka he chose the one he could trust

We can all speculate you know! I love a good conspiracy theory lol

Oh, and before the inevitable attacks start from the usual in this forum (which makes it such a happy place to be), born in 1971, grew up with the UOT and would love to own it in HD. I just live in the real world.

There's more than two versions

An ultimate set with every cut would be kinda cool, there are 4 major cuts, and several minor cuts (including the 1982 home release that adds "A New Hope" to the title)

The major cuts are:
  • the theatrical cut
  • the 1997 Special Edition theatrical cuts
  • the 2004 DVD cuts
  • the 2011 Blu-ray Disc cuts

Are we sure that George Lucas still doesn't want the UOT out there?
Perhaps he changed his mind or perhaps he saw that it couldn't be helped and this is what the fans are asking.
And with all the fan editions and preservations...

You are right. The only downside would be the closure of the original trilogy.com forums and then what would happen to all of the members who spend years in their mums basements spewing bile and hatred? Overnight, all of their amazing restorations would be rendered redundant.

I would pay for that

You know, I'm 99% sure that even if the UOT gets released, it still won't be right. There will be some change.. something..
So, the preservation versions won't be redundant at all!

But i don't understand why are you so against the people that helped all of us relive the original experience of Star Wars trilogy, since its creators didn't.
I say, thank heavens we had those people.

Lol, you are right. One scene somewhere would have a grain of sand on tatooine that was too green, or had too much DNR applied to it. It would scream out for a proper and full restoration and pages and pages of hatred aimed at george Lucas for daring to make that grain of sand different.

I'm not, I think the Harmy version is amazing. Just wish they would tone it down a bit when they come to the forums. Sarcasm misses sometimes, my apologies.

I wouldn't rush out the door to buy Episodes IV-VI with all it's supplemental material included, as it's mostly standard-definition, but I would make a run for it if the original movies were finally released.

The average consumer won't care about the UOT, because they've already bought the Saga set. Disney's market is the UOT crowd and getting new fans getting ready for The Force Awakens ... and O-Ring collectors ...
Same here, I won't rebuy just for a digital copy and the existing bonus features (I like to moan about LFL leaving them off the Blus but I've still got my DVDs, LD backups etc) so there's gotta be a genuine USP to get people to buy them again.

The sad thing is, they'd probably get just as many people excited about buying them if they were in individual steelbooks as if they'd included the remastered OT.

That would be great, if we could get sets that contained the theatrical, '97, '04 and '11 versions of all three films. Have to admit I'm not as bothered about having the theatrical cuts of the first two prequels, I can take the latest versions of those and be content with that.

I know there are more than two versions of each film, but I feel like that'd be asking for too much. I think it's more realistic to expect the UOT plus the latest versions of the Special Editions, and that'd probably be it. But if they wanted to toss in the '97 and '04 versions, I sure wouldn't complain.

Yeah, in the last few years Lucas still owned Star Wars he seemed like he didn't care as much about holding the UOT back to me. If Disney released them now, I don't think he'd mind as long as his preferred versions were still available.

And right there is the point. You bought the video tape, the dvd, the ld, the Blu Ray and millions will buy the digital release. The money is there for disney regardless of the version. The UOT will be small change in comparison to the rest of the market.

Every format you bought had different extras and the digital release appears to be no different. We are like lemmings, they build the cliff, we throw ourselves off.

I guess I prefer the 2004 cuts over the blu because in terms of changes I'd rather not have Vader screaming 'noooo' or the poorly done R2 behind the rocks.

Question is, would long needed upgrades like Palpatines slug fix and the crossed saber fix remain in a blu version of the 04 cut? (those issues were still there in 04)

I've given up on them ever fixing Luke's blue saber on the falcon (in ANH) in a consistent manner. THREE SE's later and it is still awful.

My last purchase was the first dvd trilogy set and I am not bothered unless they offer something better than the terrible masters they have been using since then

That's an interesting prediction but it doesn't really ring true.

See, Lucas is retired and us basement-dwelling haters all know that.

It's the self-styled realists who can't seem to wrap their brains around the fact that Lucas is no longer part of these various equations.

I'm still wondering if those Sebastian Shaw Anakin pins they'll be handing out at the celebration is any indication that there'll be an announcement.

I would hope that most people who want an unaltered OT Star Wars on blu-ray would have enough sense to realize that it would look a little rough in spots. The original effects shots are going to look rougher looking than the shiny Special Edition CGI.
