And what great timing, too. As of December 18th it won't be the complete saga anymore, and thus out of date.

Still a WAY better artwork than the previous complete saga set. Who thought it would be a good idea to have Jake Lloyd on the cover? Yikes! And it's a normal amaray! Nice! Still not individual cases like I wanted but it's better than the digipak. |

Did not bother to buy the blu set once I found it would not include the original, award-winning version. Harmy's collaborative results prove that the Lucasfilm stance that it can't be done/would be too expensive to recreate is bull. The only legitimate argument for a hold-up, that I recall hearing, is that 20th Century Fox still owns distribution rights to the original film, so it would require them and Disney to strike an agreement. And I've bought several releases of the the "classic" trilogy over the years, so I don't feel bad saying I've seen the Harmy de-specialized editions. They've done a great job. Fox owns permanent distribution rights to the first film. The only way Disney could get the rights is if they struck a huge deal with Fox. So why haven't they already tried to do this? Because Fox is run by a bunch of stubborn pricks. Fox pretty much hates Disney because in their mind: a. They took the possibility of any future Star Wars films away from them. b. They've tried to kill their X-Men film universe with the MCU. To further prove my point, when regarding the box office flop that was the remake of Fantastic Four, a Fox exec. said they were disappointed, but still going forward with the series. Just let that sink in. Fox would rather continue to produce a failed film series than let Disney have the rights to the characters. |

As for them hating Disney, shouldn't they hate Lucas instead? After all, he agreed to sell to Disney instead of them. Disney didn't go and steal Star Wars from Fox, Lucas gave it to them. And do they hate Sony too? After all, Sony did Spider-Man? Was that an attempt to kill X-Men? I think you are reading too much into this. It is purely business. Look at lotto winners - you can get your full payout over 20 years or get a smaller payout now, all depends on what you want. Fox knows that the new films will make money, they know they will be re-released again and again in theatres and for home video - why give up the rights now when you can make more money just by waiting? When it comes time for those releases, deals will be made because no matter what Fox wants, Disney will make more money so they will pay because they know we will pay. No one really loses out(except us as they squeeze every dime they can out of us with each release). |

So Iger can negotiate with Sony and help Marvel get Spidey for their films, can negotiate Indiana Jones distribution rights from Paramount, but won't be able to negotiate a simple distribution fee with Fox for one movie? Or just do some horse-trading and buy out that distribution clause?

Is it really a cash cow though? Or more to the point, for how much longer will it be a cash cow? They've got perpetual distribution rights to Episode IV but that only covers theatrical distribution and physical home releases. It doesn't appear to cover non-physical distribution.
I'm not sure your 20 year annuity comparison really applies in that case. I'm not a physical media alarmist and I believe there is still plenty of gold in them thar hills but there's also no question that this particular cash cow is getting thinner and thinner every year. I could see Fox selling their distribution rights while they're still relatively valuable. |

They are not what you think. They are incredible pieces of work. If an official version comes out with a 4k transfer Disney may do an overal fine effort, but something will bypass quality control. I am absolutely impressed with what can be done by a fan. Watching them takes me back to how much I do love Star Wars. You don't have those distracting scenes. It's Star Wars, just as millions of fans saw it in the 80s and 90s. You can sit and just enjoy the story. Something I haven't really done since the 90s. It is your loss. The DMV will be a shorter wait time than Disney's unaltered trilogy release.
