But it's not the same movie. Different cuts make the movie feel slightly different.

I didn't mean keep all the movies, just the Star Wars ones. I kept every format I bought Star Wars on, so I can watch any cut at any time that I want.

Agreed.

It is the same film. Its a different version but slight differences dont make it a completely new experience. Its up to the individual to define how they view it and purchase/keep what they want accordingly. This is conjencture anyway as only he can answer why he got rid of his collection but Ive done the same thing for the reason I mentioned

Hindsight is 20/20. I guess it also depends on just how big of a fan you are and if minor changes are enough to justify double dipping and not using money earned from selling to go towards that

At this point, I consider The Phantom Menace to be a standalone "kiddie" Star Wars movie. I'm retro-actively dubbing it the first of those "Anthology" movies coming out.

While I'm saying "should've, would've, could've" on the prequels, I think characters like Bail Organa and Owen Lars should have had bigger roles in the story starting in Episode I. I know I would have cared more about what Organa was doing in III if his character had been built up more previously-- his role in AotC was pointless, and I don't think I even realized who he was until Sith.
What about Palatine's rice to supreme Chancellor? The Nemoidians? The rise of the Sith? The finding of Anakin Skywalker? The introduction of Padme/Queen Amidala? The introduction of Coruscant/Naboo? The introduction of the council? Duel of the Fates? Etc....

I fortunately still have all my Star Wars VHS' and DVDs. I keep em all mostly for nostalgic reasons but some I still watch. Defintely glad to still have my '06 DVDs, even if the transfers are crap. Also glad to still have my first trilogy VHS set I got from my grandmother when I was I guess 4. I dont know. I just never see the reason to part ways with a past release because 9/10 times theres something different with each one that you appreciate them more. Granted i dont own the BluRays of SW and frankly that doesnt bother me. I wouldnt mind the SE's so much if the originals accompanied them but alas they dont. My only regret is not having the new bonus features thats in the BluRay set, new meaning theyre not on the DVDs.

I thankfully have held onto every iteration of Star Wars I've ever owned on home video, including the Limited Edition DVDs.

The quality may be extremely sub par, but I found it amazing how much I enjoyed watching them a couple weeks ago before seeing The Force Awakens.

It's funny, because I was never the kind of fan who would complain all that much about Lucas' tinkering. But after the changes made the BDs, it was kind of like the straw that broke the camel's back - you know?

On a side note, just last night I ended up uploading (and listening to) my 1993 Anthology Soundtrack set to iTunes. Aside from it just being wonderful to listen to, I love the packaging and design of that set. It's so wonderfully old school Star Wars (i.e. "The Star Wars Trilogy").

Finally saw Episode VII after a couple weeks of avoiding spoilers. It was miserable. To me, it's the best Star Wars film yet since the original. It was brilliant and every single decision made was the right one. I was worried definitely that Abrams' choices would edge toward the new Star Trek but it was in every way a completely different universe!

That'll teach me not to skim read! At first I thought you were saying you thought the movie was miserable - until I read went back and reread everything you wrote.

So happy you enjoyed it!

Yes, in this modern age, I dare to store my music on an iPod. Such a sinner am I.

Though I'm not against blasting the CDs throughout the entire house, I hardly think the other slumbering members of my household would have appreciated it.

Yes, they can, but that's been true with almost everything Hollywood has ever produced that has generated a sequel or similar film in the same genre. But Disney can have its cake and eat it too (if anyone in Star Wars has ever eaten anything, which I don't think I've ever seen). Since they know whatever they do is going to be a financial success, they can give it artistic merit as well. The budgets certainly allow for getting the finest writers, etc. They're not going to do anything completely off the charts because they won't want to alienate the audience, but there's nothing that says the next films in the series can't be far more original - after all, it's not a reboot like Star Trek was.

You're working under the assumption that because this first new film has made so much money that Disney doesn't care at all about the quality or originality. While the most senior execs may only care about money and proving the investment was worth it, I would find it hard to believe that the people who actually create the film aren't trying to make the best film they can.

Having said that, let's remember what this is: It's Star Wars and that in itself is a limiting factor because every film has to be about a war in space. And if the next two films are films about members of the Skywalker/Solo clan plus any new characters from this film, that's also going to be automatically derivative. But it's not the overall plot that made the original Star Wars interesting, it was the details of the worlds that Lucas created along with the energy of the originals. But let's say they did try to be original and a future Star Wars film was about completely different people in a completely different galaxy. How do you think that would go over? I think it would fail no matter how original it was. In fact it would fail because it was original.

What are the odds that when The Force awakens get released on Blu ray that they will release new versions of the originals with digital copy?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I couldn't find any blu Ray copy currently that comes with a digital copy.

There isn't any. Currently you have to buy the digital hd versions separately.

This is a pet peeve of mine in general when people talk about the plot/story of films. Everybody focuses on the broad strokes, but never on the details. It's like when people say, for instance, that Avatar was just a copy of Dances with Wolves.

I'm like "what??"

Not likely, due to the complex distribution rights situation the pre-Disney Star Wars films are in. Hence the Fox rerelease of the saga and the individual Steelbooks releases this year didn't include digital copies.

IV - Owned by Lucasfilm. Full distribution rights (including digital) belong to Fox indefinitely.

I - III and V - VI - Owned by Lucasfilm, along with digital and TV rights. Fox has theatrical and home entertainment rights till 2020.
