That's exactly my point. There's nothing wrong with the CGI itself, just its placement in the film. It's splitting hairs somewhat, but I see CGI get frequently crapped on as a whole when it's the same as any other special effect. Some examples can look bad, some can be beautiful works of art. I'm not directing this at anyone in particular, just the perception that many see digital effects as a lesser piece of creative work

I think he did a decent job of connecting the two ends of the storyline, considering where everything had to ultimately end up (Palpatine being the key link, and series MVP to boot).
But I don't mind the corporate corruption stuff itself, what I do mind is the movie feeling so distant from the two movies that follow. As said above, Phantom Menace feels like a prologue, like the story before the story, as if Lucas couldn't reconcile this long-standing backstory with the reality of fashioning three screenplays out of it.

Luke could sense Han being tortured in another system and was guided to their location.

So why does that prologue say Palpatine was just a figurehead controlled by his assistants and appointees?

People always reference how quickly Anakin turns against the Jedi but by marrying Padme in secret he's already shown how much contempt he has for their rules, and it's no secret that Mace deeply distrusts him, so when the time comes Anakin gives in to his fear and anger and frustration to destroy the Jedi in the name of saving the one he loves.
Arrogance. A flaw more and more common among the Jedi, even older ones.-Yoda (Even he himself was blinded.)

A significant part of the prequels are about the Jedi's shortcomings, blindness and arrogance.
This talk with Kevin Smith is quite interesting IMHO:

I should add, Obi Wan and Yoda weren't the only Jedi that survived order 66 long term, even in canon. The Rebels TV show revealed four more survivors.

Kanan Jarrus and Asoka both surived and avoided detection for the longest time. In the case of Kanan he put his Jedi past behind him and stopped using the force so that helped him. And Asoka faked her death.

Luminara Unduli survived but was captured then executed shortly after. And one Jedi Temple Guard survived and became the Grand Inquisitor.

I'd hate to be the one who spoils your comment but Luke didn't actually "sense" Han being tortured. If you go back and watch that scene from Empire Strikes Back, it was actually a "force vision" that Luke experienced. Han hadn't been tortured yet. Luke was experiencing a series of force visions during his training on Dagobah, as Yoda and Obi-Wan tried to explain to him.

I suspect that the Emperor also had a similar experience. That he had a vision that Lord Vader was in pain and rushed off to aid his apprentice. Whether they are light-side or dark-side force users, they still experience force visions. It's the one commonality among the films.

Hell, even Rey in The Force Awakens has similar force visions and she even hears Obi-Wan's voice, which was creatively edited by the editors (Obi-Wan doesn't really say Rey's name since the character hadn't even been created at the time of Sir Alec Guinness' passing).

These are all elements of force visions. Force users who can "sense" another force sensitive's proximity is actually limited to the proximity of another force user. I think you confused force visions with force sensing.

No one would argue this fact. But there's no way this role gets re-cast!

For all we know Leia might be getting killed off in Episode VIII anyway.

If not than I hope we get a tasteful off screen death like what was done with Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek Beyond.

Possibly like they did with Nemoy via Star Trek: Beyond: an off-screen death with a subtle dedication to him. That's the most tasteful approach that I hope IX would do just as equally.
