Hyperbole again.

I've literally seen dozens of DVDs that make Episode I look like reference material.

I'll explain - if the originals were included, the Prequels and Special Editions would naturally be included also, meaning OT fans would be screaming and yelling saying "I only want the orignals, not the Prequels or Specails Edition", meaning they'd be getting several films in the set they don't want. Not only that but, they would be paying double, if not triple the price for the set of films they want.

It seems like Lucas will never be able to please all his fans, regardless of what he does and in many ways I hope that only one version of each film is included because then you would have the defintive edition of each film and would link to each other much better than before, and you also wouldn't be cluttered with different depictions of events, which is what would happen if you included all editions. It would then naturally feel like when watching them in order that this is the actual version of events. Just my opinion though, not fact.

Either way, I think it's best if GL didn't put the originals in, for reasons stated in the first paragraph.
I'm sure there will be three versions on blu- the original the second, then an "all new w/never before seen extra's version" he has this rep.

And yet the 'frustration" he speaks of led to some amazing films. He sounds more like a producer than an artist.

Well, to be fair, I think this may have been the first time I've watched it since I got my HDTV back in '07. I seem to recall that it looked a bit better on my old WEGA CRT. Or at least the bad transfer wasn't nearly as obvious on a SD CRT.

I think one of the biggest problems is that this disc is from '01. DVD compression techniques weren't as good back then. But they tended to get better by the next year, '02, as Ep. II looked quite a bit better...I think. I haven't watched it in a while either.

I doubt it. Lucas said the original copies of the theatrical release are gone forever. The DVDs that had the OT were derived from laserdiscs.

They do look like crap, but I guess that's the best we're going to get when it comes to the original cuts.

Well, if that's truely the case, then they truely are gone forever. Because if they used the LD versions for those un-altered versions on the SE of the DVDs, then yeah....they're gone.

This is a lie by Lucas. Do you really think he would not keep the original negatives of his most profitable movie series of all time? Wouldn't Fox keep any negatives or at least a theatrical print?

I imagine the Library of Congress has a copy, and there are definitely copies in private hands that could be used if he really wanted to. The thing is, Lucas doesn't want any good copies of the OT so he'll say stuff like this.

Whatever. Since my DVR can record like 50+ movies in HD before it's full, these can stay there till next October.

I have seen these on Spike HD, all six of them and they look exactly the same as the upconverted DVDs believe it or not. If you have an above average converter and own the DVDs then I wouldn't even bother with using your DVR. Plus as mentioned above all six movies are cropped from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1.

Getting back to the DVD of Ep. I...wow, I'm tellin' ya folks, it was horrid. The scene when Naboo is getting invaded by the droid tanks as they roll down the city street, was like VHS quality. I haven't seen a DVD that bad in ages.
I just listened to TPM audio commentary, and the worst thing about the dvd transfer is the unbelievable amount of EE, noise is too much as well, and lack of detail, but that's because it's a DVD.

I think it's going to look great on BD. I don't think the effects are dated a lot. To me they hold up very well.

I still can't believe that none of this films won any Oscars, not even for soundtrack or costumes.

Whatever, I'm still going to do it, then if I decide they aren't worth it I'll consider deleting them. But I doubt it.

No one said you should delete them. They actually look halfway ok but they are not anything like what a real Lucas approved Blu set would look like.
