I've seen the Hidden Fortress and have the Criterion DVD on my shelf still (some of the only DVDs that didn't get consigned to a box in the closet, in favor of my BD collection).

My example was a specific example in counter to the poster I replied to, which has a similar context to the flow of the plot.

Well, I hope new masters are being created, but I hope he's not "striking" them! That makes it sounds like he's chizzling them as if they are rocks, and a chizzled film print will look even crappier than what we got in 2004!

In all seriousness, I do hope he fixes these issues. As much as I wish the proper transfers of the original versions of the OT were included in this upcoming Blu-Ray set (and had been included with the 2004 DVD set, or even in the 2006 DVD set which had improper transfers), I can deal with the fact that they won't be (and for DVD weren't) included from the get-go.

But it really sucks that the transfers of the versions that were released in 2004 were so terrible with the color correction, etc, that was done to them. I mean, it's REALLY sad when you consider how well that set sold. No matter what, even if you are someone who loves all of the changes, additions, etc, to the movies, by ANY reasonable measure, what we got on that DVD set were half-assed versions of the movies at best. They better get it right for the Blu-Ray set.

George said film restoration & clean-up is an expensive process, so the Original Theatrical Trilogy release is out.

He has 4K (I am pretty sure there is nothing higher) transfers of the Special Editions, so he could certainly create a new blu-ray transfer from those!

He will tinker, and I am sure we'll all read loads about it!

LOL @ ANYTHING being too expensive for George, like he's a broke ass pauper or something. Dude could rent the universe from god if it were possible. That's the worst excuse he could have offered up. Just be honest and say you're ashamed of the movies you made in the 70's and 80's for some odd reason (don't forget that TXH-1138 has been altered slightly, as well). I'd respect that a whole lot more than a bold faced lie like "a restoration is too expensive". GTFOOFWTBS!

He's not ashamed of the theatrical versions but they do remind him of the struggles he went through to get those films made and honest, the guy could've live with certain shots the way their were left in their theatrical version.

That's the whole reason for the Special Editions. He needed to fix the things he always hated. And no, I don't care that he's going to be going back for a third time to fix things. The fixes won't be drastic or life altering. They'll be minor, at best with the Original Trilogy.

It'll be interesting to see what he does with the Prequels. That's way more intriguing than arguing, AGAIN, about what he's changing with the Originals.

I get that. There's nothing wrong with touching up *certain* outdated shots, but George has little understanding of the concept of restraint, as demonstrated by his bull-in-a-china-shop approach to the prequels. Let Han shoot first, get rid of Jedi Rocks and the useless Jabba scene in ANH, bring back Vaders "bring my shuttle" line (LOVE how menacing he sounds when he says it), and return the Sarlacc to its original design instead of having it look like Audrey IV...and I'm pretty much fine with everything else.

You will never see BD format movies on BD66, 100, etc.

It's only for PC storage.

Funny how the Prequels are better films then. So not sure how that works.

And pretty much all those changes you mentioned were for the best. Thank goodness.

Doesn't have to be money he's talking about. Could be too expensive in his time to supervise and what not and still be a valid description. It would be extremely valuable to old time fans, sure, but that's a decidedly diminishing return that isn't profitable (in time or money) to cater to.

The funniest part is that everyone has different additions they like and dislike. I really don't like Greedo shooting at all, but the rest of the changes are far for the better. I'm agnostic / neutral to Jedi Rocks. At first, I used to hate the new RotJ ending theme but now I think the Yub-yub Ewok song is far inferior, so it changes through time, too. The only way to ever please everyone (who cares) would be some super specially seamless branched version that had toggles for each scene. That would be a scoring nightmare, though.

Indeed. Like I said before, I prefer the "You're lucky you don't taste very good" line.

But I can deal with it, for all the improvements that the rest of the films get. The Greedo/Han scene doesn't bug me either way it's handled. I can take it any of the 3 ways it's been presented so far.

Love Jedi Rocks, always thought Lapti Nek was kinda lame. Same with the new ending of RoTJ, where we see all of the major planets of the Star Wars Universe in the wake of the Death of the Emperor. And I'll take the new song anyday over the "Yub-Yub, Celebrate The Love" song. Don't get me wrong, I like the Ewoks.

But it's just not a very satisfying end to the film or films..

Beast, you're special. Thank Vishnu/Allah/Flying Spaghetti Monster you're one of the few people in the multiverse who thinks this way.

I can't believe I'm entertaining this comment, but honestly, you REALLY, TRUTHFULLY believe turning the subtly menacing Sarlacc into the Little Shop of Horrors plant was "for the better"? Or the ridiculously stupid Jedi Rocks number in ROTJ? Or Han having the reflexes of a mongoose on cocaine to avoid being shot at point blank range by a professional bounty hunter?

Well, it would be, because technically BD is a storage medium, not a video format. You could add 4K to a future BD spec (Profile 4.0? 5.0?) and it would then be Blu-ray.

Personally, aside from ESB, the BEST writing has been in The Clone Wars, and The Force Unleashed IMVHO. Why couldn't George have leveraged those writer's talents SOONER!

Oh well!

I still remember how WONDERFUL I felt the first time I saw each of the film's Opening Crawls, the films themselves were ok (ESB was awesome) after that!

LOL

IIRC he still can't use Writers or Directors from the Guilds for theatrical movies since his big spat around RotJ's release.
