It is. Cause why should he waste money releasing versions he considers flawed and inferior.

Because fans prefer them? Not only that but I'm sure he could more the re-coup any money spent with a 2nd release of the original films on Blu-Ray if his motivator here is money, which it probably is.

And if you claim the current version is some sort of "perfect version" why is he releasing them in 3D? $$$

Who cares what fans want? The only person he's obligated to please is himself, as the artist.

Again, there's no logical reason other than fanboy desire for those inferior versions to be re-released.

Little kids want a toy everytime they go to the store, doesn't mean they should get it.

He should care what the fans want and as the person who stands to gain/lose the most, he should take that into consideration before releasing these movies onto blu-ray or into theatres.

Good filmmakers do. Considering Lucas hasn't made anything good sense Return of the Jedi I guess I answered my own question.

Just remember who you're talkign to. Beast does nothing but makes excuses for Lucas every time anyone says anything negative about him. He has over 200 posts in this thread alone. Might make more sense if he just changes his avatar to a George Lucas pic.

You said 'made' not 'directed.'

Besides, Lucas can't and won't get anyone from the American Director's Guild to direct his movies anymore. That leaves various mostly untried/unproven foreign directors.

"The Hollywood unions have been taken over by the same lawyers and accountants who took over the studios," Lucas says angrily. "When the Writers Guild was on strike, I couldn't cross the picket line in my function as a director in order to take care of American Graffiti when the studio was chopping it up. I quit the Director's Guild because the union lawyers were locked in a traditional combat with the studio lawyers. The union doesn't care about it's members. It cares about making fancy rules that sound good on paper and are totaly impractical. They said Lucasfilm was a personal credit, not a corporate credit. My name is not George Lucasfilm any more than William Fox's name was Twentieth Century-Fox. On that technicality, they sued me for $250,000. You can pollute half the Great Lakes and not get fined that much. When the DGA threatened to fine Kershner $25,000, we paid his fine. I consider it extortion. The day after I settled with the Director's Guild, the Writers Guild called up. At least their fine didn't go all into the business agents' pockets. Two-thirds went to writers."

http://books.google.com/books?id=P2P7pwHeZSkC&pg=PA139

The ultimate issue, of course, is the ownership and of his films and the creative license to do what he wants with his property. Lucas won't reliquish that to anyone, the corporations, the studios, the directors, the writers, the unions, the lawyers, and especially the fanboys.

I feel at least he can port over the laserdisc transfers from the 2006 DVDs. These would take up very little disc space (4-5 gigabytes at the most) and would be a nice extra. I doubt it would cost much time and money thats for sure

I personally prefer most of the Special Edition changes (with some definute exceptions) but I think the originals are a part of film history and should be preserved in some aspect even if it is with inferior quality

Glad that we can always count on you when it comes to justify Lucas' decisions.

I am a fan, and I certainly do not prefer the original versions, as they simply don't represent George Lucas' and my vision of what SW was supposed to be: Epic!!!

George has had the dream of converting his SW movies to 3D long before J.C's Avatar, and I am sure it'll win him new fans, and convince old ones to appreciate the incredible VFX of the PT better.

Wouldn't you want to make money of your products if you had the chance too? What's wrong with that? He is not hurting you, is he?

Whatever makes you happy! Btw., George didn't even direct ROTJ, and I prefer ROTS by a long shot. It's THE master piece!

"The National Film Registry is the registry of films selected by the United States National Film Preservation Board for preservation in the Library of Congress. It was established by the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, was reauthorized in 1992, 1996, and 2005 by acts of Congress. Well they can preserve their laserdisc and VHS quality copies. Nothing in the Bible or Constitution superseding an individual's basic property rights. Unless you're the first one seriously proposing that?

Also, how many times does the EXACT same argument have to flare up in this (and every other Star Wars related) thread?

It never goes anywhere, we know who's on what side.

Let it go.

Absolutely I would want to make money. Which is why if they were my films I'd transfer BOTH the original cut and the special edition to Blu-Ray. The process is time consuming and costly but I have a very hard time believing the original cuts wouldn't make a good deal of money on Blu-Ray, and even DVD too since I don't believe they ere transferred to DVF either. Believe it or not giving the fans what they want CAN actually be profitable.

Only way it could turn a profit would be to come out before the SE. Whichever comes out first would see the lions share of sales, whichever one was second would be a net loss. Lucas obviously doesn't like the original cuts anymore. Even before the remastering costs and the idea that they destroyed some of the originals making the SE, there's the retailer issues on stocking 2 different SKUs, separate packaging, etc. Ain't happening, most likely ever. You can hope for another non-anamorphic laserdisc treatment, maybe, though.
