Again, this is why I think this specific scene is a running gag for Lucasfilm.

It's basically back to how it was originally, but not fixed to how the fans want it. Yet, in the other screenshots I've seen of the rips, I think the other saber shots look completely fine...

I mean, for the love of God, we've seen actually video footage of the Empire Strikes Back duel as of last week and you can see that the sabers looked good, with the white, hot cores. People tend to forget what we got last week.

And then this gets released and all of sudden they didn't change anything they said they changed.

Cannot make everyone happy I’m just glad we are 2 weeks away from having star wars on blu ray finally. Wasn’t that long ago they said it wouldn’t happen for a long time.
Seriously? This particular really old cheaply made movie won the Oscar for visual effects. I happened to see this really old cheaply made movie when both the movie and I were in the primes of our respective lives (well, I was in high school - and in band, no less - so prime might be a bit of an exaggeration on my part but the point still stands).

I don't know what these transfers look like and I likely won't know until Barnes and Noble slips them into my mailbox a week or so after they're released.

But to say 'it's only Star Wars, there's only so much LucasFilmLtd can do to make it look, you know, good' is a little ridiculous, no?

adywan,

Not going to have a contest with you. But, if you really want to be specific about your example, that's really aqua, not green which is precisely between blue and green.

If you really, truly want to get specific....

And it was never blue. It's always been mostly white, damn near white with a hair shade of blue....

But for me, what I'm seeing is definitely NOT what was on the '04 box set. What I'm seeing is what I've always seen over the years.

Luke's saber, in specific shots on the Falcon, is barely blue. It's mostly white in some shots. It'll be lightly blue in another. There's NEVER been consistency with the saber effect in this particular scene.

NEVER....

But again, it's not definitely not GREEN.

I'm actually starting to think that this specific issue with Lucas and ILM is a running joke. They've left it alone specifically as a joke or an acknowledgment of the era in which they've made that film.
Uh, yes, it is. Can someone tell me how to take picture of the video and upload it so I can prove that it is in fact GREEN?

Around the outside edge of the lightsaber the glow is green.

adywan,

I'm sorry but that's freaking white more than it's definitely blue.

Yes, it's less saturated in the '97 Special Edition, but I wouldn't even call that blue.

Not necessarily to NOT fix it, as I agree, this shot has always looked like crap, but to issue a press release that makes a big song and dance about fixing this issue. That's borderline false advertising. In fact, you could pretty much remove the borderline couldn't you?
I have to agree it's odd, considering lightsaber fixes were one of the focal points of their presentation. I actually thought the rips were fake too. The Ewok eyes seem legitimate and like something Lucas would spend time on though. Who knows? Maybe these are fake. We'll find out by tomorrow, I think.

There is an ever so small chance that A New Hope is fake and the other two are real BD's... but nah I think this is just a case of Lucasfilm strikes again!

To those saying the lightsaber is not green I present you with...Green. Direct captures using VLC Video Player.

Let's hope they are, if only because it would be great to shut the door on a lot of the negativity on some of these issues (I've been a SW fan too long to imagine zero negativity existing, something else will present itself).

If they are legit, saber issues aside, I wonder where the blinking stops. Have they taken the Adywan approach and added blinks and gestures to other masks throughout the saga (Greedo, Jabba etc)?

Edit: seeing those caps above, I'm going to go out on a denial limb here and suggest these are not legit representations of the discs that will be released. I repeat, no way you could hold a press conference stating you have fixed those issues and have those issues still remain. Surely?!

And I say that in the knowledge that I'll still be buying the set regardless, those little details have never bothered me enough to ruin my favourite saga. It's more the principal of the thing after the press statement.

Any chance anyone could run the cliff's notes version of the FOTR EE green debate by me?

I know there was a pre-release fuss about the colour timing? Was it justified?

Here is a quote of my post before my post showing the screencaps. Notice how I said the GLOW is green? Read the thread before making smart@$$ comments, please.

Cook,

The glow from the white core is more aqua than green or blue.

But you know what, it doesn't even matter. This is the culture of Star Wars...an never ending cycle of bickering on who's right and who's wrong. I'm just done now.

You guys enjoy nitpicking this release to death because ultimately, that's what this thread will morph into FOR REAL when these get released. And it'll be the same arguments over and over and over again.

Adios....and Beast, good luck fighting the good fight because I have a feeling you'll be all alone in here in about two weeks.

Looking at those supposed B.R rips/screenshots, the glow of Luke's sabre mixes both teal green and aqua blue. They don't look over-processed at all though, so i'm betting these are how they originally looked.

A lot of things can come into consideration with the whole colour issues. Firstly, the sabre colours were never consistent anyway (in ANH), and thats a product of the films budget and era. Saying that just because the film won awards for its SFX means there were no errors is ridiculous. Today we demand perfection and judging by the reaction/analysis of fans today, its gone scrutinisingly frame-frame-frame. I don't recall people complaining at the errors made during animated feature films from the 40's/50's, such as glass/camera reflections and inconsistencies in the paint... And I highly doubt when the film was re-released on home media, fans amassed and provided a debate on how the sabres looked.

The guys at ILM were quoted as saying "We're trying to get back to the intention of the original film experience... That's really what's going on with the lightsabers. You want that hot white core...". Watching the film from my very first VHS, to the '97 VHS and then the DVD, the details were far too subtle to actually tell (or even be bothered) whether the colour was inconsistent or flickering. But now that we have HD at home, its both one of the best and worst things that could have happened as it reveals things that the audience never considered before.

Any-who, so what if the lightsabre isn't consistent? Its a fictional weapon - just enjoy the f***ing film.
