I'm as disapointed as the next man about the additional changes, particularly the Darth Vader "Nooo", voiceover scene. I just thought that was a good article.

Portman looks mighty fine here.

[Show spoiler]

Anyways, I don't understand the teal tint in episode 2 now, its like they're going for the Matrix look... I'm hoping thats merely a TV calibration issue though.

I posted pics of my set (here) last week, so maybe you're talking about me? I've expressed my opinion of the discs numerous times in this thread, and I've done my best to help answer questions about the disc contents. But the thread moves so fast...

I certainly don't feel as if anyone should be told whether or not to enjoy a release or not - if you like it, you like it. But at the same time, when so many people will accept any middle of the road transfer (I'm not just referring to Star Wars) with a giant smile on their faces, what reason do the studios really have to try harder?

I remember when the first mess of a Gladiator release came out - people were defending it like anyone who saw the blatant issues were insane. If you take issue with technical problems on a disc, you get an eye rolling emoticon and you are labelled 'nitpicker'.
I mean there's definitely a fine line there... I think the Lebowski release is waaaaay too DNRed and it loses a lot of depth as a result, but as a big fan I am going to suck it up and buy it. It doesn't mean I'm just happy with any incremental upgrade over the DVD, it just means that for a movie I really like, I will buy it in the best form available, even if the form isn't perfect. In that sense, I'm part of the problem and not the solution, but it's really a catch-22, because if I stick to my principles and don't buy it, I'm robbing myself of the best version of a film I love. If I do buy it, I'm sending studios a message that I don't care, but I DO care. I watch a brilliant restoration like "Once Upon A Time in The West" and it damn near brings a tear to my eye because of how fantastic it makes a 1968 film look. I would love that kind of care to go into every BD release.

Personally, I don't even consider DVD an option anymore. To me, it's obsolete, so any movie I have on the format ceases to exist when a BD copy comes out. It's a personal choice and many may not agree, but I won't even watch DVDs unless it's really necessary. "Sticking with the DVD" is not an option for me in all but the most extreme edge cases.

The worst thing about DNR/EE being used excessively is the apologists who will genuinely claim it's an improvement because of this and that. It's so sad to see people in such deep denial that they will spin negatives into positives just to convince themselves it's money well spent.

I may buy the DNR/EE stuff when I love the movie, but at least I fully acknowledge I am compromising my principles and am mildly disappointed, I don't make up nonsense about how overprocessed slop is "an improvement".

Lol, Attack of the Teal Tint! First Fellowship and now this.

Although in this case it may actually benefit the film because the old neutral scheme made everything look even more fake.

Using this site's rating system, video 4/5 (higher if not for TPM), audio 4.5/5 (PT 5/5, OT 4/5), extras 5/5.

You forgot to add the /s at the end.

If this is really appears on my TV with that teal tinge I will be annoyed, but not nearly as annoyed as I would be if it carries over to ROTS.

Well, the green tint in Fellowship of the Ring didn't look that bad, so I'm not worried about this teal tint either.

Oh wait, I wasn't even buying this set anyway.

It just means that a lot of DNR was applied with a lot of painstaking effort. DNR is most likely localized, and customized on a scene-by-scene basis. TPM reminds me so much of Aliens in that regard. I don't have a problem with it. DNR only becomes a problem when it's applied haphazardly on a wholesale basis. I often see that with budget-conscious Blu-ray transfers.

I usually prefer to keep natural grain in my video and photos. But in the case of TPM, I think scrubbing away the grain might actually be a good thing. The prequels are full of live action scenes with composited CGI elements. Ep2 and Ep3 were shot digitally. For those films, grainless live action scenes merged well with grainless CGI elements.

However, Ep1 was shot on film. The contrast between grainless CGI elements and grainy live action elements would've been jarring. People complain that CGI Yoda and CGI Jar-Jar stick out like sore thumbs in TPM. I think they would stick out even more had the grain been left in.
I think I agree.

Some people asked about the deleted scene where Yoda communes with Qui-Gon, so I'll put it here as well. It's not Neeson voicing Qui-Gon, and the visual effects are very rough. Basically it's Qui-Gon saying a couple of things, while the camera rotates around a simple 3D model of Yoda. It finishes with Organa entering and addressing Yoda.

As in the case with the LOTR EE tint, the teal tint in AOTC seems to diminish contrast and overly darken the image.

Check out the shot of Portman and Christensen in the shadows and compare them side to side.

Not a huge deal to ME, because I don't hold the PT in anywhere near the kind of esteem as the LOTR EE, but it doesn't seem necessary.

Don't forget, it's possible to add grain as well as remove it. If you want to marry a clean effect with a grainy/noisy live action plate, then you DNR the plate (or shoot it as cleanly as you can to begin with), do your CG thang and then regrain it to match up with the non-CG shots. Effectively managing grain helps to 'sell' a shot IMO, not detract from it. The distortion of the anamorphic lenses also had to be accounted for on Ep I, as John Knoll explained on the audio commentary, which also adds to the realism.

Still, camera negative as shot shouldn't hold a tremendous amount of grain (unless it's high speed, see the comments about Aliens) so when it's scanned in there's very little grain to begin with. And the footage from Ep I was scanned circa '97/'98, so I'm wondering if what we're looking at is the result of skilled DNR application after the fact, or the limitations of near 15-year-old 2K scans laid bare, with accompanying CG shots made to look just as smooth.

I'm liking the teal push to Clones. Makes it look a little more serious somehow, instead of the candy-coloured adventure that it was.
