Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film, Star Wars: Episode VII.

It's so weird knowing that Frank Oz isn't going to be a part of this. Nor Billy Dee Williams. Supposedly.

With Yoda having passed away, you really cannot do anything with Oz.

Lando was never really a central Star Wars character, so I can see him being left out.

With Lando, I can see it either way. He was not a core Star Wars character, but obviously played a key role in Ep. 5 and 6.

So long as there is no Jar-Jar Binks in it...

If this episode is meant to transition for the third generation to take the lead in VIII and IX, I don't see Luke's mentors playing a key role.

While Kennedy and company will be forced to follow the continuation of the existing saga (i.e. the OT, the Clone Wars, Rebels, the most recently announced 'canon' books and sadly the prequels), they will most likely distance themselves as far from the prequels as possible in every way they can (i.e. no Hayden Christiansen or Ewan McGregor force ghosts, no mitichlorians, no mention of droid armies, trade federations, Count Dooku, etc.).

Kennedy and Abrams will most likely have the goal of returning the brand to its former glory, with quality of the screenplay taking priority over all else (they've said as much, what with the top-to-bottom re-writes and all). Judging by the most recent announcement, the casting of the new characters was a close second. The writing had to improve, and in order for a new story with a plot that actually makes some sense, while simultaneously not bringing up any of the happenings in the prequels, Abrams and Kasdan most likely wrote with the prequels not existing in the back of their mind.

You know their meetings with Lucas must have consisted of a bunch of head nodding and "uh-huh's," but as soon as Lucas left the room they were probably all shouting "NOPE!" The beauty of Lucas only being a consultant is they can literally toss all of his suggestions out the window.
