In this case, i would consider the original theatrical version the cut one.
Just a couple of days is too short to consider that that one is the theatrical version of the film, and the cut one is a director's/special edition.

I thought that Kubrick trimmed it himself? Why would he leave it up to projectionists at the local theater? And, it would have been before general release.

Would you say the same for The Shining? Regardless of how quickly it was removed (a week into wide release, but a full month after the movie had opened), and despite its short length, excising the hospital scene is arguably a major change. The tone of the movie is altered considerably.

What, you think he went around the country and did each print by hand once they'd already gone out to theaters?

He couldn't have gone to those theaters and physically cut those prints himself. The projectionists were given detailed instructions of what to cut (i.e., which reels, which frames), and the trims were returned to the studio. The Shining was the same MO, albeit that was on a much larger scale.

The "killed my childhood" is a reference to those that have said he ruined their memories of when they were young and 1st watched the UOT, the current versions are "abominations", etc.

As far as "uphill battle" that was my point, there should be no need for an uphill battle. This uphill battle is what alienates a fanbase and people should just realize that we share something in common (a love for Star Wars). Each of us have different stories and movies within the franchise that sucked us in. As I said before if we worked more on out common love for the franchise instead of trying to work so hard to separate and put down others because of what they like, we wouldn't have so many issues in this thread.
I've read a vast majority of this thread and have never read anyone call George Lucas "evil".

I may make fun of him for being a hack and a selfish control-freak, but evil?
That's just silly

I would be careful about saying never. I agree that the so-called Lucas hate gets grossly exaggerated. I can't recall ever seeing anybody claim that Lucas raped his or her childhood. People in this thread weren't wishing him dead or threatening him with death. And for the most part you're probably right...most of the Lucas bashing stopped short of calling him evil.

But not all of it. Some of the attacks over years have been pretty vicious and words like evil and the devil weren't unheard of.

Okay.

Did I say that specific phrase in that post? No....I said the "Lucas is evil" phrase....the Lucas killed my childhood stems from those saying Lucas has ruined their memories of the theatrical releases (often seen when they are children. *shrug* honestly though this will just go in circles as I've seen before.

Perhaps I should say no one says that stuff anymore?
I like to think that fans of the UOT are pretty level-headed these days.

In fact, I noticed how much more relaxed the general mood of this thread was lately... until someone came in to cause trouble yet again with the accusations and what not

As I said "Lucas is evil" (different terminology used sometimes) (please read the bold) can be said without being said.....that term HAS been used before (in general), of course this thread has been "cleansed" so many times its like the Blu-Ray versions of the OT (see what I did there ).....

Silly is how much of this back and forth has been in this thread...

Sometimes I forget how literal people take posts........

Actually its been cleansed, a few times recently.....Im not sure "level headed" is what I would call some of the discussion here....we still see "sideswipes" at people because of the Trilogy they like, we still see people getting upset that someone could be happy with the current releases...Sure there are those that are level headed, but overall I think this thread has been most the opposite.....I wouldn't say people don't say it any longer either, they have just "evolved" the way they describe their feelings

Heh, does this ring any bells?

I still haven't seen ANYONE explicitly say they don't want the UOT released

That right there is what caught my eye in your initial post. In one breath you set the bar at what people explicitly say and in the very next breath you want to focus more on what really mean and not what they explicitly say.

It's not a big deal, I'm not calling you out as some big hypocrite or anything.

I just thought it was an amusing sequence and worth a mild tweak or two.

As I and others have said, it is the people with your attitude that seem way more upset than anyone else. I don't get it; you like the prequels? You have the blu-ray set? You enjoy said blu-ray? Why are you so made/upset/angry at everyone that doesn't feel the same? Why are you incomplete that you have to come to a thread like this and stir things up?

ehhh if people want to believe I don't want the UOT out because I like the current Blu-Rays more power to them, whatever gives them fuel to keep the fight going. *shrug* Ive seen people call GL evil and that hes ruined their memories of the movies from when they were young....I still haven't seen anyone say "I don't want the UOT released at all", Ive seen people ask for others to post where this was said, but it goes no where....I don't get how one connects to the other, (liking current release means that I don't want to UOT released).....so maybe someone can explain HOW they can connect and I can understand where people are coming from with that statement....

*shrug* Im not angry...I have the Blu-Rays, I don't mind (don't love\don't hate) the PT, I do enjoy watching the Blu-Ray set, I also would love to see the UOT released......

How am I stirring things up? Someone would have to be\get upset in order to stir things up, I haven't posted anything that should have made anyone upset. I've actually posted that everyone should be more welcoming to those with different views (maybe that was it?) this way everyone can share their love of the saga without bringing a hailstorm down on them....*shrug* oh well.....

I can agree with that statement, though. When a story gets bad, it can taint the enjoyment of the other aspects of that story.

Take The Matrix, for example. The first film was brilliant. Then the first sequel was ok. Then the third was an incredibly terrible film. Just bad. Because of how bad that was, it gives me a bad memory of The Matrix overall. You want to pretend it doesn't exist, but you can't unsee it or get the 2 hours back you wasted watching it.

It is an associative thing, I guess. I can think of a few TV shows or film series where this happens

I agree it can ruin a story what people are searching for is some inkling of that feeling they had when they were young and 1st experienced it. With all the iterations of these movies we have a generational clash where different people experienced different versions. Just because someone likes the new iterations or SEs because that's what they grew up with takes nothing away from those that love and want the UOT released. We all share the love of Star Wars (old, new, whatever ) that is what I was trying to get across that we should be focused more on what we share instead of trying to alienate others because they have different views. PT, OT it's all SW and we are fans together

As far as the matrix goes the last two were for sure not as good as the 1st, I don't pretend they don't exist, rather I just don't watch the other two as often for me it's easy to separate things (the matrix trilogy for instance) but sometimes I know things can become tainted for some people and there is nothing wrong with that either.

I'm sorry, I like to have my audio booming as it immerses me into the movie. I have no problem with them putting 2.0 audio on the disc, but I won't listen to it. If that is the only option, then fine, but I doubt Disney would only release the movie in 2.0.

Kubrick did have Santa Powers™. He did indeed fly around cities, with the intention of trimming a few reels of 2001: A Space Odyssey with his trusty Stanley Knife in the dead of night. Unfortunately he was distracted by a print of Belle de Jour which was opening a week later. So he sent minions out the next day to finish the job ...

That is not what I meant. There was the premiere. Then, my understanding is that after that then he re-edited the film before it went into wide release. That is the point that I was making was that he did not instruct local theater projectionists to edit his film.
