Those comparisons are completely misrepresentative of the differences between the DVDs and the SKYHD broadcasts. They have used two different colour scales for the captures, which makes the SKYHD broadcasts seem as if the blacks aren't as crushed and the picture is lighter. The only difference between the DVDs and the SKYHD broadcasts are resolution. The colour, brightness etc should be exactly the same between the two sources if the person had actually known what they were doing when they did the screen captures.

What? Originally only mono? seriously? So i guess those that heard the surround & stereo mixes since 1977 were all just imagining it then?

Can't wait to read the full report. That will be interesting.

Shouldn't a film series of this magnitude have been given something like a new frame by frame further restore(if needed) 4k or better scan/transfer? Seriously, are we talking Lucas went el-cheapo here on this set?
The Blu-Ray of Bambi used the Lowry restoration files, with some further tweaks for HD. The capture data isn't the same thing as the final product. It's one of the reasons why I don't get too upset by the color issues with recent Disney animated features. The colors may be tweaked for home video release, but the original negative has been digitally preserved and will be available for future releases well into this century.

So, if it is true that this is the 2004 Lowry restoration, with corrections - that doesn't bother me. I'm just glad they made the corrections.

I know that jumpman was not suggesting that Star Wars was only in mono in 1977. It was in Dolby Stereo in most theaters in 1977 ( in all the theaters I saw it in) and was advertised as such.

I wasn't saying that jumpman suggested this. All he did was repost what was said from the interview over at home theatre forum and i just quoted the section that was relevant to my reply. I was only pointing out that their answer as to why there is going to be a new mix is inaccurate.

Wasn't there at least 4 different mixes for the original film when it was released?

If so, which one is right? And, which mix was first?

Not being sarcastic...I honestly want to know.

The mono mix was the final version to be completed before the films release. here is some info about it:

Quote:
What is the mono sound mix?

The mono sound mix was one of the three original sound mixes created for the initial release of Star Wars. These three original sound mixes include:

70mm 6-track

35mm Dolby Stereo

35mm Mono

Each of these mixes had to be created separately. As a result, some things were done differently, just by chance, but also by design. The mono mix was the last mix to be completed and it featured a large number of differences--it was actually considered to be the "definitive" mix at the time. However, as more and more theaters upgraded their sound systems to Dolby, the mono sound mix received less and less exposure until it finally slipped into obscurity. Astute Star Wars fans swore the film had been changed, but they were really hearing a completely different sound mix.

The mono sound mix was also featured in the 1977 "Story of Star Wars" album, and in it several of the differences can be heard.

So, I ask, what's the big deal with them going back to the original mono mix, instead of the 35mm Dolby mix or the 70mm mix?

What order should I watch the saga if I've never seen the movies? I've ordered the complete saga even though I've only watched one of the movies, it was one of the prequels, probably The Phantom Menace. I know that the timeline is:

1. The Phantom Menace
2. Attack Of The Clones
3. Revenge of the Sith
4. A New Hope
5. The Empire Strikes Back
6. Return of the Jedi

Is that the order I should watch them? Or should I watch them by their release date, which would be #4, #5, #6, #1, #2, #3?

You'll likely get lots of different answers from lots of different people. For me, I'd go for internal chronology, so 1-6 I'd say.

All of you have less proof about the blu-ray transfers than Bush and his Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq. Calm your anxiety down, seriously.

I'm still asking the same question that I asked a few posts ago, do we have any confirmation of any retailer having any special goodies like an extra disc or lithograph or anything similar?

As for the order to watch SW...I'm one of those who think you should watch 4-6 FIRST then you can continue with 1-3. I believe the prequels are just an after thought about how Darth Vader became what he is.

Thanks for the screen cap link, I couldn't find it. Anyway those pics are so small it is hard to tell anything. I like the mouse over because it is easier to see differences, but again we need big pics.

TPM had a nice slathering of EE applied and riddled with blocking. So I would assume no matter what, that will be gone with the Blu Ray release.

That's strange considering that I saw the film in its original release in 70mm 6-track (L-Le-C-Re-R-Surround) "baby boom" stereo and that the film was also released in 35mm Dolby Optical stereo (LCRS)

So your comment makes absolutely no sense. The only thing that would make sense is to say that the original mix had mono surround, and they went back to mix it into stereo surround, but none of the OT had stereo surround in the theatrical releases, not even the special editions.

Edit: OK, I've seen the other posts and some people contend that the mono mix was "the" mix, but I would disagree with that (are they confusing Star Wars with the Beatles?). Even though the 70mm prints played only in a limited number of theatres, all press and information from Lucasfilm at the time and for years after considered the 70mm mix to be the canonical mix.
