Lol understandable. This thread moves incredibly fast and its hard to get a reliabble answer from it sometimes.

I think it's obvious that the UK times are accidentally listed as PAL. If you add 4% for the speedup the times will match up with the U.S. times.

A 4% speedup does not make any of them match the US times... Did you even try this before posting?

Also, you shouldn't be speeding PAL video up, you should be slowing it down...

A 1 minute NTSC video is 1500 frames. If you convert that to PAL, it's 1 minute and 2.5 seconds. So if the films were incorrectly listed as PAL, they should be longer.

Agreed, that DVD transfer is just horrible, I just watched again yesterday and I barely could stand the transfer, and it made me realize how much HD adds to the enjoyment I have of movies. I love LOTR, but I had watched the extended editions so much on dvd that I was bored sometimes when I was watching them ( and I'm serious compulsive rewatcher of movies haha) but now I can watch them on blu and it's a whole 'nother thing! You can see all the subtleties in the performances, it's a different experience ... that's why I can't wait to see Star Wars in bluray! Especially The Phantom Menace, i have very fond memories of that movie, I think I watched it in theaters about 10 times, seriously, I still have the ticket stubs haha xD ( i was 13 at the time I know some people hate that movie, but it was the first time for me that I watched a star wars movie in a theater)

I'm off to see "Are you afraid of the dark?" good night

I still can't believe some fans are still complaining about the blu-rays even through its been said that most of the A/V fixes from the dvd releases of the ot have been corrected. Well I guess you can't please everyone. I don't care what the complainers say the star wars saga on blu-ray is going to be a great box set.

Sorry, not blu-ray related

But has anyone with a "THX Certified" TV tried watching the 2004 DVDs in THX Mode?

I watched ESB yesterday and was amazed at how different the movie looked under properly calibrated settings.

In most Hoth scenes, the snow was actually white (there was the odd blue shot)! Vader's saber did not look pink for a second, although the issue with the cores bleeding was still present. Also, no garbage mattes to be seen.

Previously, I've only watched the Star Wars DVDs on my bedroom TV, which is obviously not calibrated correctly, but the DVDs looked incredible on my living room Panny.

This is, however, only regarding the colour timing. All other issues are obviously still present.

SPOILERS ALERT IF YOU NEVER SAW THE MOVIES!!!!

I just read something very interesting about Force Ghost:

Quote:
While Yoda and Obi-Wan are seen to vanish upon death, leaving behind only their physical clothing, Darth Vader's body does not disappear or dissolve onscreen. Luke Skywalker is later seen burning Vader's armor, including his helmet and faceplate, but it is unclear whether the armor still contains Vader's body, though the novelization to the film says that Vader's body did disappear and that the armor was empty.

Questions arose after the release of The Phantom Menace, when Qui-Gon Jinn's body did not vanish after his death fighting Darth Maul and, perhaps more importantly, none of the other characters expected it to. Qui-Gon's remains were burned on a Jedi funeral pyre on Naboo. In the film's DVD commentary Lucas indicated that this apparent discontinuity was a plot point that would be revisited.

In Revenge of the Sith it is revealed that the ability to return as a Force Spirit is a recently discovered and complex discipline unknown to most Jedi. Yoda informs Obi-Wan that the late Qui-Gon Jinn discovered "..the path to immortality", the secret of how to retain his identity after death and absorption into the Force, and that his spirit would instruct Obi-Wan in this discipline during his exile on Tatooine.

George Lucas has since indicated (on the Revenge of the Sith DVD commentary) that the appearance of Vader's former self, Anakin Skywalker, as a Force Spirit at the end of Episode VI is due to a combination of Anakin's own latent Force ability, his achievement of a moment of unconditional compassion at his death and redemption, and Yoda and Obi-Wan's spirits helping him extend his identity out of The Force.

Do you think Qui-Gon's death scene might be "updated" on the Blu-rays?

You ADD time to a PAL run time to achieve an NTSC time.

Let's try one. A New Hope is showing 119 minutes.

119 x 1.04 = 123.76 or 124 if rounded. Same time as the NTSC DVD. Depending on how the original and re-calcuated times are rounded, they could be off by a minute and none of them are off by more than that. The UK PAL times are all consistent with the US DVD run times.

Check the back of the UK cover... lists ESB as 122 minutes. My DVD copy says 129 minutes.

122 x 1.04 = 126.88, off by anywhere from 2.12 to 2.61 minutes...

Why do you have to add time to PAL? You could just as easily take time away from NTSC. It's just a matter of what format the video was originally encoded in. In the case of Star Wars, wouldn't it be NTSC?

Put your Empire DVD in your player. It's 127 minutes, not 129. Don't go by the cover. The calculation works on that.

I'm just starting with the PAL times since that's what the UK cover is showing. I'm converting it back to what it should be for comparison.

Oh, you know they'll quote this too.

I bought TPM the other day at a used DVD store just for the bonus disc - now that I know for sure there's no archival stuff at all on the Blu, I figure it was justified.

Haven't been able to keep a close eye on the thread the past couple days - hopefully I'm not missing a lot of news. Is part 3 up yet from the HD group that did Part 2 with Matthew Wood?

Does anybody understand what I'm talking about? I'm tired and I'm not sure I'm making sense.

No part three is not up yet on HTF. Hopefully soon. I'm looking forward to reading it as well.

Lay off the guy, he's excited for the release. And he's optimistic, there's got to be a little bit of optimism when there's soo much pessimism going on

yes, how dare anyone be unhappy with this set when almost every change people don't like has been lovingly retained and conveyed via obsolete video transfers...

I wonder how many units The African Queen sold compared to what Star Wars will do... not a lot, I'd wager. But it got a state-of-the-art restoration that took a lot of effort and man-hours, aligning those Technicolor elements by hand and all. Isn't it a bit questionable that Warner, Sony, Paramount, Fox, etc, lavish millions of dollars on classics that will never sell that well, but Lucasfilm haven't done the same for arguably the biggest blu-ray box set there is?
