I would agree in this case. I will be watching the extras as this is Star Wars and there's too much fun to be had.

I have requested off from work on the 16th,17th, & 18th. I plan to watch the movies all the way through in this order: I,II,III,IV,V,VI, then I'm going to check out all of the bonus material, then I'll go back and check out some of the coolest shots from all of the movies again. I plan to take my time, and really savor every moment of this whole set. Only 17 more days of me not owning this on blu-ray.

A/V #1 yes but 90 minutes of deleted/extended scenes of which 45 minutes are from the OT. That's nothing to sneeze at. We've been looking at very rough versions of some of this stuff for a long time now. I may spot-check a few scenes from SW first but then I'm going right for the deleted scenes.

It also bothers me knowing that they have the 6-track and mono audio versions saved but aren't including them on this release. Probably because they wouldn't sync up (with all the changes). Why would they have them saved if not for a future release of the OUT...?

Any chance the Complete Saga set will drop any more in price before release?

I would like to point out that unless I missed it, nobody at Lucasfilm or Fox said they fixed the blue color-timing issues in the OT. They said they fixed color issues, but then went on to talk about lightsaber brilliance and white cores. They didn't even mention the color of Vader's saber. It would appear that the decision was made that it was an artistic decision and doesn't need 'fixing'. Prepare for blue ice, pink sabers, and all of the other little quirks that the 2004 versions had. Right now; at this moment; I believe that they are avoiding the issue, because they know there is a handful of fans out there who consider these issues to be a deal-breaker. The Special Edition additions are peppered around the films, usually in small little moments. But the color-timing changes made to the films is on every shot, every frame of the franchise. If that is a change that you dislike, it's very difficult to ignore. I calculate a 13% chance that I am wrong, and that the colors will be more faithful to the versions of the films we have seen from 1977-2003.

We all could, but then we wouldn't know what to argue over on the internet!

As September 16 looms I want to say may the force be with you all. We've had our differences, but in the end if you guys are happy with the release then I'm not going to argue that. I'm just disappointed that the films haven't gotten the true treatment they deserve, UOT or not.

I still have my preorder from B&N ($40 out the door) and am not sure what to do with it. I'm 99.9% sure I'll pass on this release and see what the future holds, but I'm still interested to see how these discs turn out and what people think of them.

For $40 you really can't go wrong. I'm sure you can find enough enjoyment out of the films in whatever form they arrive in, plus all the bonus features to justify the low cost you'll be paying. And if not I can take that set off your hands for that great price!

Yeah, no sh*t. As my baby pics from '73/'74 could attest to. Sons of b*tches turned red by the early-'80s.

The original Ralph MacQuarrie renderings of Hoth had a blue-tint to it. Which was then ported over to the Orto Plutonia episode of Clone Wars from Season One.

I doubt they were stored in a climate-controlled vault
Star Wars is not unique with regard to color fading. If that's Lucasfilm's excuse for not giving the films a proper modern digital restoration and reusing their old efforts, it's a weak one.

I'll be watching I, II, III, IV, V, VI, just so that I have the OT to get the stink of the PT out by the time the viewing is over. Having said that, I did only see each PT once in the theater, and never again on DVD or TV since, and I am willing to give them another chance. Maybe I'll like them better this time around. After all, Natalie Portman isn't in the OT...

I have 30 posts in this thread! Woot-woot!

Article basically goes really in depth into the original restoration. Basically it looks like after that restoration the original negatives and master prints are beyond repair.

Actually, it doesn't say that at all. Only that the negative has the new '97 shots in it now, and the other pieces are stored somewhere separately.

From what I've read, the original negatives (ie, not the opticals) are not the most serious problem. They used them even for the 2004 transfer as-is. It's the film the effects were composited on that faded, because they used some film not intended for long-term storage to get things done faster/cheaper. But they can recomposite those, which is exactly what they did for the SE: they found all the original elements to produce the SEs (except the Jabba scene, which is not from original negative). They're apparently quite damaged in terms of scratches and dirt but that's more correctable than missing color information.

Every year Lucas doesn't digitally restore these films on modern equipment that can extract the full quality of the original photography, the color on the original negs is slowly rotting away. It's a scary thought.
