Um, this is Star Wars. It's known to create ill rational behavior if one little thing isn't done the proper way the fans think it should be done.

This is not unusual behavior.

I never saw the film as it originally opened in '77 because I wasn't born yet. But, from my recollection of watching a VHS tape made off of Showtime for years and then official VHS releases over the years before the Special Edition, Luke's saber in that scene, at least for me, as always been a very, very light blue-almost white...which didn't fit at all with the rest of the film because in the rest of the film, it was blue.

It didn't go green until the '04 boxset color correction made it green...which is an error.

If these screencaps are legit, then all Lucasfilm did was restore it to how I've always known it to be and they didn't completely 100% redo it to where it matches what his saber looks like through the rest of the film and that trilogy.

And because of this and these recent reports from the official Lucasfilm event, the internet will destroy itself today.....

While I admit it would be a pretty poor show if LFL has made a big PR point of fixing these issues, only to have half-finished the job, I'm burying my head in the sand and entering full-on wilful blindness mode until these new pics and samples are 100% proved as the real deal. I know LFL has previous in these areas, but it just seems odd to me... If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, and there's no way I'm not getting the set anyway, but I'm gonna keep a little optimism going.

I saw clips at the Empire Big Screen expo and the Blu's looked great to me, far better than I've seen at home. Certain shots still looked dodgy (I'm thinking that odd explosion when the TIE's crash in the Asteroid canyon) but then, as Jump points out, certain shots have always looked dodgy.

Where, if these caps do end up being legit, LFL has made a rod for its own back (apart from not fixing obvious errors all the way through) was making a big splash about fixing things. Had they been honest (which to be fair, they may very well have been) then they could perhaps have avoided the possible uproar if it turns out they only fixed the one screenshot they release for their PR.

It just seems crazy to say, Look, we were listening, we have absolutely fixed this issue, only for it not to be fixed.

It's that, that makes me think these samples/ caps are not the real deal, because if they are, that is an astonishing own goal from LFL

Lol very true but the movies haven’t even come out yet. And how much do we really expect from an 11 million dollar movie from 1977. My lap top has more technology and power in it then a whole warehouse of super computers in 1977.

Well, the PR photo showed specifically that they fixed the saber shots...even mentions it in the article.

All this rip does, at least for me, is confirmed that they put it back to how it was originally over the years....instead of the error that it was in the '04 box set.

That's not going to be enough for people. This is one instance where people have wanted it blue all these years to match the rest of the film and for some reason, it's technically not.

But, it's definitely not green anymore...it's how it was.

You seem to be talking about the wide shot where is sabre is green that lucasfilm showed the "fixed" shot. You should check out the blu-ray sample and you will see the sabre in most of the other shots is still green. It's this that we have been talking about, not the one they changed back to blue because we haven't seen a screencap or clip that shows this shot from the leaked blu-rays.

adywan,

I looked at the sample. To me, that's not green. It's a very, very light blue, almost white.

And again, from my recollection, it's always been that way before it got screwed in the '04 release.

But whatever, this means nothing to me. All this means is that, for some odd reason, Lucasfilm and ILM can't get this specific scene right. It hasn't been right since it was originally released.

This is a change that people have wanted from the very beginning....

But, this is not one of those "I'm throwing my hands up because they can't fix it and they lied" moments.

I just don't care. You guys call call it green all you want. To me, that's not even remotely green. This set is still being purchase...no matter what.

I think some people expect GL to have some magic wand he can just wave at these really old cheaply made movies and all will be fixed. Or maybe he should spend even more money to try and make those few people happy that never are happy. Because we all know if he fixes the color then it will just be something else. Cannot make everyone happy I’m just glad we are 2 weeks away from having star wars on blu ray finally. Wasn’t that long ago they said it wouldn’t happen for a long time.

Does it not seem very odd that they would only fix that one wide shot, Adywan? I know LFL has previous when it comes to quality control sometimes, but it seems so weird to me that they would make such a fuss about the fixes they have made, only to not fix them. Wouldn't that open them up to all sorts of bad PR, reclaim calls etc?

I get the Greedo shoots first or Shuttle changes. I personally disagree with them completely but they are a creative decision for better or worse. Saying they have fixed the Falcon saber shots then not fixing them is a completely different issue that could come back to bite you, should that not be the case.

With the past sound issues and colour timing, again, they could use the creative decision defence. Not so, should the sabers not be fixed.

I'm still optimistic this is not the case.

Reference head,

In the defense of others and not Lucasfilm, it'd take all of ten seconds to fix the lightsaber on the Falcon if ILM really wanted to do it.

But for me, what I'm seeing is definitely NOT what was on the '04 box set. What I'm seeing is what I've always seen over the years.

Luke's saber, in specific shots on the Falcon, is barely blue. It's mostly white in some shots. It'll be lightly blue in another. There's NEVER been consistency with the saber effect in this particular scene.

NEVER....

But again, it's not definitely not GREEN.

I'm actually starting to think that this specific issue with Lucas and ILM is a running joke. They've left it alone specifically as a joke or an acknowledgment of the era in which they've made that film.

Yes, but this is 2011. They can go back and do anything to these films now, as evidenced by the changed/added scenes, revised effects, and CGI additions we've been seeing for 14 years. He's made changes to this 1977 film for its '97, '04, and 2011 release, including some fixes in 2004 on Vader's lightsaber.

It's rather odd that Lucasfilm holds a PR presentation and points out things like fixed lightsabers but then we see this. If these shots are legit, we went from a green saber to a white saber with a very light green glow. I'll admit that this saber has never looked right, all the way back to its original theatrical release in 1977, when it just looked white. But why would you "fix" so many things in these films and add things like blinking eyes on Ewoks and yet leave lightsabers, one of the hallmarks of Star Wars, messed up yet again? It would have been very easy to make it the correct blue and fix it once and for all. Many of you can do it in minutes on your computer. They can't do it in 7 years since the last release. It's good to see that they have their priorities straight and got to work on those Ewok eyes though.

Maybe in 2019 when they are finished with the 3D versions of the films they will release them on whatever format and maybe they will get it right by then. It seems that these people running the show are doing things to piss people off on purpose.

That's what suggests to me that these rips might not be legit. If they are, that just seems like a staggeringly odd decision.

Not necessarily to NOT fix it, as I agree, this shot has always looked like crap, but to issue a press release that makes a big song and dance about fixing this issue. That's borderline false advertising. In fact, you could pretty much remove the borderline couldn't you?

Sorry, but that's green. It wasn't that way when it was originally released either or in 1997. It was originally blue

That is from the 1997 SE. The glow is less saturated but you can see the difference. 1997 it was clearly blue.
