No one cares about the PT, it's 6 hours of post-megalomania Lucas failure. We right-minded SW fans are upset that said failure is infecting the OT films to this extent...

I'd go more "Laughably Bad". It's fun with the Rifftrax file though.

Lastly, to clear it up for me, you are a fan of the Prequel Trilogy right? The avatar isn't ironic? I have to ask since... well, it's Jar Jar.
Yes. As I've made mention before, The Phantom Menace is my favorite film in the Saga.

And yes, I also like Jar Jar. You might say he speaks to me on some level.

He's that awkward kid that just doesn't fit in with the group, but is still a valuable part of it.

To me, he's a really interesting character and I wish he would have featured more in the Sequels.

Plenty of people care about the PT. For the most part, I prefer them to the OT.

"Right-minded Star Wars Fans"? Heh. Funny. You simply have a different opinion, not a superior one.

This is a joke to lighten the serious mood in here. Please enjoy the video and laugh at it regardless of your stance on the changes.

That was funny. Thanks, I think the thread could use a less serious tone.

That's one reason why I have the Japanese laserdisc of TPM (which is the only releasee that has the theatrical cut). A lot of the pod-race nonsense was added for the DVD release.

I didn't know people didn't like the pod race so much. I thought it helped the movie pick up pace when it really needed it. Is it just because it's too long or are there other reasons?

Actually the original VHS release also had the theatrical cut. And I liked a lot of the stuff added with the "Second Lap".

It's just been confirmed that the Padme's Ruminations scene in Revenge of the Sith now has a lengthy voiceover by Hayden Christenson during the scene, just in case some of the more "slow" fans were unclear what was going through Anakin's mind while looking at Padme across Coruscant.

Fans simply want the originals on Blu and proper widescreen, is that such a problem? No. Is that a big deal? No. Why are you so bothered over this? The problem's between Lucas and the fans.

Also, they're not JUST movies, as you say. AVATAR is just a movie. Predator is just a movie. INCEPTION, is just a movie.

Now, Star Wars may be a movie, but it's penetrated more than just popular culture as we know it. It has, in a sense, become synonymous with the American Culture itself. It defines our people, in the same way that Seven Samurai and other Kurosawa films define the films of Japan and their culture.

And of course, Star Wars, has literally defined entire generations of people, inspired them to make their own films, or to sometimes just believe that there's some good left in this world.

For one, I'm a little bothered about the new changes myself, and have lost even more respect for the man who was once THE George Lucas. But even so, don't go on making hollow comments about something you don't really understand. You may be a Star Wars Fan, but a film buff, or a film aficionado, or enthusiast, or Cinephile as some may call it, ye are not.

The master negatives, or "film prints" for the Original Unaltered Version of STAR WARS IV: A NEW HOPE, were destroyed long ago. All that exists is this 'special' edition.
How dare you put inception in the same category as avatar and predator.

Jumping into the fray...

I have mixed feelings.

I think Lucas can do what he wants... and we can choose to buy or not. We aren't "owed" these movies in any format or content.

I do believe, however, that the movie studios should endeavor to first preserve theatrical releases so that they can always be brought back if the public wants. Sometimes I like the director's cut better, but I always like having the option to see the theatrical release too.

In a perfect world... we would get the original theatrical releases... and then the latest edited "director's cut" versions on Blu. It would be hard to also preserve the 1997 versions and the 2004 versions since Lucas keeps tweaking... so I would settle for original + current iteration.

Now... that said...

I'm ok with some of the changes, but not others. I don't like Hayden Christiansen inserted in the end of Jedi... not because I hate Hayden... but because the change seems unnecessary AND actually slaps the face of the guy who was edited out of the movie! Poor guy.

I wish they would have left muppet Yoda alone. I'm not anti-CGI... and in the later prequels the stuff they did with Yoda needed the CGI... but I personally think muppet Yoda looks more real, because he is real... and it is some good muppet-work, that's a shame to see go poof.

Other changes are more debatable as to whether they add, subtract, or completely change things... but I don't lose sleep.

And last but not least... I do wonder about how the Star Wars fans are polar opposites of the Lord of the Rings fans. In this thread people are freaking out about not getting the originals... but in the Rings thread people freaked out until they got the director's cut extended editions.

Personally, as I said, I want both... but ultimately I have to live with whichever they choose to release and decide to buy that or not.

I started getting tired of the obligatory chases eary in Jedi. The asteroid field in Empire was a pretty obvious retread of the trench run but it worked. Jedi's chases were just boring (oooh, a trench run inside the death star) and TPM felt the same way to me. The underwater chase and the whole pod race spectacle seemed really boring and manipulative.

I have to say the seismic charge chase in Clones was pretty cool though.

I miss when the movies were known by their names rather than by "episode _."

They're still Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi to me. I avoid calling them by "episode" number. It's another subtle way of "connecting" the PT to the OT via a naming scheme.

Personally for me, it was just waaay too long. I would have preferred for it to have lasted about as half as long as it did. It just seems to be going on and on and on without much variation in it. Kinda like a real NASCAR race.

Now, if I saw it in 3D, I just might change my mind.

To be fair...

Sebastian Shaw is still in the film. He still has his name in the credits.
He still plays the Unmasked Vader who actually has dialogue and emotes.

And the Puppet Yoda is still there in the OT. It' just the E1 Puppet that was replaced.
Mostly because the physical puppet just turned out looking downright terrible.
