Well the story has now hit Yahoo's front page. The writer isn't happy and the comments aren't happy either. Same goes for Entertainment Weekly's article.

This is definitely the biggest blow up over any changes done to the films. All the write ups are negative about the change and the fanbase on all forums are negative about it.

Excellent. It will be nice to read this thread without all the hate.

This thread is cluttered with the same complainers making the same complaints over and over again. If you're not buying the BDs, say your peace and move on please.

I'm buying the Blu-ray set. The changes are "meh" and not needed, but most of all they don't change the experience of the films for me. Obi makes a weird sound: meh. Vader now says "no". Eh.

Am I the only one who remembers Indiana Jones saying "Oh 5h!+" before shooting the sword guys in Raiders and in Temple? He doesn't say it any more, where's the outrage there?

Well, in an ideal world he could just fix all the glaringly bad things like the landspeeders, shoddy special FX and explosions etc., maybe spice up the sound, but leave everything that wasn't broken intact and don't add in anything that wasn't already there in terms of content, still call it a different cut, not pay his wife half the profits, and satisfy all us whining fans.

I can dream.

Probably in the Indy thread, I would imagine. Not the Star Wars thread.

If Lucas had only changed a few things around, it may be a different story, but some of these changed alter things fairly drastically.

Even the changes to E.T. seem minimalist compared to the slicing and dicing he has done to these from 1997-2011.

No outrage because he never said it in those scenes.

I honestly think this digital tweaking 30 years later is interesting. Maybe an artform in and of itself... but it doesn't/shouldn't overwrite the original work. Any more than "Ice Ice Baby" should replace "Under Pressure".
Beautiful!

This is what many people have been trying to say for hundreds of pages, but none have been able to do it so succinctly.

Perfect analogy.

There's no outrage because he only did that in Temple.

And it wasn't removed from the film. (It's on the rope bridge, right before he cuts it with the sword.)

When did he say that? The only "aw sh-t" moment is on the bridge at the end of Temple of Doom. Which BTW is always removed in the cable broadcasts, so I've probably seen the movie way more times without that line than with it.

He will now say "oh snap" in the upcoming blu ray: to relate to the kids.

Yes, it will be good not to have to duel with anyone over this anymore. I used to really care about these films, but they just get raped over and over and over. It's like watching the Christ whipping scene in The Passion. Enough already, we understand that the dude is being tortured--you don't have to rub our noses in it.

The changes in E.T. have been mocked and justifiably so, but no one hates on Spielberg(well, 99% of fans don't anyway) because he offered both cuts of the movie on DVD and he didn't shortchange the original version either. It has the original Universal logo, an equally good transfer, and a DTS 6.1 track. That's how a director can satisfy his own need to update his classic films without sticking it to the fans.

It's a little know fact that all snow in the late 70's to mid 80's movies was actually cocaine. But when they went to do the Hoth landscape they were all out. Crew members pointed the finger at a certain cast member....

Snow on Hoth must be like sea in the ocean it reflects the sky and turns it blue.

Indy also says "Holy shit!" in Raiders of the Lost Ark or is that Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark?

Same with Blade Runner. They gave us FIVE versions of the film, including the original theatrical release. That disk set is a class act. Bravo to Ridley and his crew.

This is why this isn't taken seriously.

When people use things like "rape", "travesty", etc. when referring to changes in science-fiction films it just makes one tune the rest of the message out.

You would think so, but then again, this IS Lucas we're talking about. I'm still trying to figure out where the 3-4 years of work on the blu's ended up going towards. Maybe I just read into the press event wrong, but my understanding was that more extensive work went into special effects clean ups. From what has been reported up to now, that isn't the case at all, except for a couple of "select" lightsaber shots in Jedi and the emperor's slugs.......and Lucas fillers (rocks, blinking ewoks).

It also must be a little known fact that filmmakers have been turning "icy" and "cold" scenes blue for decades now.

Nevermind that Hoth did have a blue tint theatrically, just not as pronounced.
