With the change, the scene IS laughable, which clashes with the otherwise serious and dramatic nature of the scene. He doesn't need to say anything. You can SEE the conflict. The only ones who might not see it, are the ones who probably aren't attention anyway.

Many times, looks and body language speaks louder than words. It's Twin Peals. The small minority who needed the moment (or any moment in Star Wars) spelled out for them, shouldn't be catered to.

A bit melodramatic? Perhaps. But when I was 4, I understood what was going on. Star Wars isn't complex. Hell, the prequels practically spell everything out for you, including it's "deep" meanings.

There's an unwritten rule of logic to storytelling. The more you spell things out and cater to these imaginary idiots the studio or filmmakers fear are in the audience (and occasionally there are), the more DUMB you story seems.

I never said there was shock value, the guy above me did. And I agreed that you can tell exactly what's happening visually. That's why, like I already said, adding "No" doesn't really change anything. It doesn't lessen the moment (to me), nor does it add anything revelatory. And like has been stated already, every one of the films has a "Noooo," so really, it just ties the films together more.

An in truth, the story was always "dumb" from the beginning, in that sense... It's a fantasy B movie... it's not a Bergman film.

Good points and asd you say many movies use 2k scans and are fine,I feel that proper restoration will always be the key to a great Blu-ray transfer.

And in the end of the day Blu-ray is around 2k resolution so a 2k scan is fine.

As I said a couple of months ago, I believe the original trilogy will look good to very good on BD. They won't look great (compared to 4K scans of Alien and Blade Runner, for example), but solid none the less. Of course, until I see these in motion, it's still speculation as I don't base everything on screengrabs, of course.

Because we all know the rage-posts of "PRE-ORDER CANCELLED" is all just hot air. Half these people say they own the VHS, laserdiscs, and DVD's, which means they are hard-core completists, and can't live without the blu-ray too. Deep down past all of the tough-talk we're all here because we're fans of the films, and want the best VQ/AQ available. We put up with the '97 & '04 changes, even if we complained, and we'e all still here anyway.

Well, luckily for me - I've never, in the past, claimed I wasn't going to buy a Star Wars release. So, when I say I'm not buying - I've got no past precident for backing down. I'm curious to see how many will fail to stick to their guns, but it's really not all that tempting to me.

It's o.k if you display is 60" or less,as upscaled dvd's still look pretty good on these sizes, but on a larger projection screen dvd's look awful even when upscaled.

So for me blu-ray is the only option.

Hell, maybe he did cross the line I haven't come to terms with it.

I'm still in for the set on the 16th but man, I feel like my legs are a bit wobbly about this. I mean, do the films really need a rescan, considering I think the screencaps look pretty damn great?

I mean, there are people who are completely BENT about
what's transpired. I've honestly never seen anything like this!
Yeah, the changes suck and the Vader one went too far, but what I think most people are pissed about, is that Lucasfilm basically lied to not only those who were in attendanc at the press event, but the fans as well, in regards to the work that done on this release. Yes, there are fixes to the lightsabers, but only in a couple of shots, mainly Jedi, and/or in a select number of frames (ANH). The corrections that were made to fix issues that plagued all previous releases, mainly the DVD's, weren't as extensive as we were lead to believe. I'm not seeing the 3-4 years of work that was put into the blu release, from what I've seen.

And regarding Luke's lightsaber on the Falcon - why is it green/white and just bad looking, but on the menu on the DVD, it's perfect and a perfect blue with a crispy, hot white core as well? The comparison is night and day, to that and what's in the film.

It was more about his general performance in the films. I think all the actors in suits did a great job on the movies but I think the stand-out is Peter Mayhew, I watched a bit of Jedi on DVD earlier and the way he walks and moves is just special.

I agree the films are meant for children but as adults we try and re-capture the escapism we felt when we originally watched them. I guess one of the reasons people get so riled up with changes is they can take us away from the escapism we felt as youngsters when we do spot changes to them. The CGI additions can often bring us back to reality and a lot of people don't want that when watching movies from their childhood.

I spotted these earlier they sort of seem creepy to me. I would run the other way if I saw someone wearing one of these with the hood up!

What I am saying is that I think people in this thread are going to buy this release even when they say they are not. I apologize you did not understand my meaning.

Back on Friday Sept. 2nd I got "X-MEN:First Class", which as some know is also put out by Fox. A full 7 days before release day. I therefore theorize that I'll be picking up "The Complete Saga" THIS Friday, September 9th!!!!

I'd argue that these films are made for everyone's inner child.

Yes, it is true. I went to the library and read his authorized biography. He didn't like the dialogue (thought Star Wars as a whole movie was amateurish compared to other films he had done), hated being in the heat where the Tatooine scenes were filmed, didn't get along with anybody on the cast except for Harrison Ford, and hated the fact that his part in Star Wars overshadowed his previous cinematic works.

He only came back for the sequels for the paycheck and as a favor to Lucas given the popularity that Star Wars had generated.

Exactly. In the original Star Wars, they made it sound like Anakin Skywalker was this badass Jedi who turned to the darkside because he was greedy for power.

Only to the find out in the prequel trilogy that he was actually a whiny fu**ing b*tch who did it mainly to save the life of his wife. COME ON!

I will never forgive Lucas for ruining the Anakin Skywalker with his retcon bullsh*t.
If Vader was simply a power greedy Jedi who turned to the darkside for more power, there would be less to his whole redemption. His being a more complex and complicated character, who was basically good makes his descent into darkness and back to good more meaningful.

But this is not a nonsensical issue: this is a serious (in my opinion) discussion of an alteration of a film that, because of its status as a cinema touchstone, or whatever, is not the same as it was, even in '97.

This thread was supposed to be a celebration of one of the greatest trilogies in film history (in the top three, in my book), but because its creator continued to modify it incessantly and, by many fans, without reason - it is no longer the case.

Is it going to sell millions of copies? probably. Will it leave a good taste in people's mouth? absolutely not (I skipped on the obvious pun...). Why?

Instead of being treated to what was supposed to be the "crown jewel" of the format, fans perceive they are treated to a release that a complete effort may not have been thrown in it, and the film creator himself as added changes that were a) unexpected and b) so unnecessary that it tarnishes the release, the film and its legacy, and the franchise's creator himself, George Lucas.

Understand this: from a film point of view, from a story point of view, these changes make zero sense. Zero! that is what gets a lot of these people so worked up. Some people have given up entirely on SW. Others, like yourself, want to brush it aside and say, "I can live with it, now I finally have it in 1080p and 6.1 sound." Fair enough.

But you know what the worse thing is...?
Choice.
GL leaves us no choice but either to settle for the frankensteinian creations, or not watch at all. So I, like others, choose not to watch it (I have my '04 DVD, good enough for me).

He could have easily taken a page from the books of PJ, JCameron, Ridley Scott or any other director who released a director's/extended cut in addition to the original release.

So why didn't he? maybe for the same reason he added the pathetic "nooooo," and the Ben "How to scream like a dragon" yelp and "peekaboo" R2:

Because he can.
The most important word one can use for online discussions concerning Star Wars or really anything for that matter - whatever.

Oooooo, I would be up for watching all 6 of 'em in Black n' White! I enjoyed watching "The Mist" in B&W awhile back. At least the inconsistent lightsabers in the OT wouldn't bother me as much.
