Love Spaced. Just watched that episode again tonight for fun. Series 2.2 (2001). Pegg's character gets sacked at the comic shop for flipping out at some kid claiming to be a fan of Ep. I and Jar Jar Binks.

[Show spoiler]
Nice pick-up. I have the following:

1995 THX "Faces" non-SE Laserdiscs
1997 Special Edition Trilogy LD boxset
2000 The Phantom Menace Japanese LD [has the theatrical cut]
2004 Star Wars Trilogy Bonus Features DVD [from the 4-disc set]
2005 Star Wars: A Musical Journey DVD [included w/ Episode III soundtrack]
2005 The Story of Star Wars DVD [Wal-Mart exclusive included w/ Episode III DVD]
2006 Best Buy exclusive Original Trilogy tin [holds the three 2-disc DVD editions]
2008 Prequel Trilogy DVD thinpak box

Despite my burning hatred for all the OT changes, I'll probably pick up the 9-BD boxset once it hits $50 or lower. Before you pull the hypocrite card out on me, I'll tell you why: The 3 documentaries on Disc 9. I've wanted to own legit copies of "The Making of Star Wars", "SPFX", and "Classic Creatures" for some time, but the laserdiscs of them were way too expensive on the secondary market. I've made do with DVD-R copies, but their quality was lacking. Since this is a boxset distributed by FOX, the UK set should be region-free and there's a fair chance the price will drop to that price point in the future (as did the Alien Anthology set).

The new "Nnnooooooo" from Vader is awful, and I've always hated the changes to Mos Eisley and the Greedo scene in Episode IV. The upgrades to the effects, while not desirable, I can stomach. Changing character beats makes the bile rise. Instead of Han being a Badass Motherfu#*er and blasting Greedo into oblivion first, he simply seems to get lucky while doing a Michael Jackson head-bob.

Yet, I will still buy this blu-ray set.

My guess, based on the character's fan-base, the painting within the box-set, and the historical significance of his first appearance, I bet the animated clip showing Boba Fett from the holiday special will be the easter egg.

At first I was thinking I'd buy the entire set for $65 (from a DeepDiscount preorder awhile back), but now I've been thinking... I could just buy the OT for $38 (Amazon GoldBox) and forgo the new trilogy...

What do you guys think? Is the NT really worth $27? (I've only ever seen Ep. III; it was pretty good and probably better than Return of the Jedi, IMO). Thanks for any replies.

The Prequel trilogy isn't, but the 3 additonal bonus discs are.

It's about the only thing worthwhile in the entire Holiday Special anyway.

If I ever see Chewbacca's Father Itchy pleasuring himself over Holographic Space Porn again, I'll go mad.

For once something we both agree on! The Star Wars Holiday Special: The one thing that unites the PT fans and the OT fans [in mutual derision]...

You can do that, but your going to be missing out on the bonus material. All those deleted scenes...

Yeah, I've got a lot of mileage out of the Musical Journey DVD that came with the ROTS score. Very cool.

Honestly, I've never viewed a single special feature on any of my Blu-Rays.
How crucial/what kind of additional content would I be missing out on?

Thanks again for the replies.

TPM was the first SW movie I saw in theaters. Although it has huge flaws, I still like it. I'm sure the blu-ray will look and sound amazing. AOTC was bad imo. Didn't really like it back then. I have not seen it in theaters, only on DVD. But maybe I like it better now, who knows. ROTS was very good. Watched it in theaters. Only a few things that I can't stand. Probably the best of the PT. You should give them a try I say.

That's how I rank the saga:

SW/TESB/ROTJ 5/5
ROTS 4/5
TPM 3/5
AOTC 2/5

I almost cancelled my complete saga box set pre-order just because I hate the cover art. I like the cover art for the trilogies much better, but I really want all the extras so I am reluctantly keeping my complete saga pre-order.

"I let my principles get in the way sometimes. I punched a bloke in the face once for saying Hawk the Slayer was rubbish...."
"Good for you"
"Yeah thanks. But that's not the point Tim. The point is I was defending the fantasy genre with terminal intensity when what I should have said is Dad you're right, lets give Krull a try and we'll discuss it later.... THE PHANTOM MENACE WAS 18 MONTHS AGO!"
"I know Bilbo it still hurts...."

It's funny because it's true. If my old man disrespected Krull I'd take him out with terminal intensity.... Luckily for both of us the old bugger loves it.

Another realistic Easter Egg that would be nice would be the radio serials they did after the first release. They'd certainly be easy to fit, seeing as it's audio only.

And yeah, that Boba Fett cartoon seems like a winner, although that's a be careful what you wish for thing: I have one of the Star Trek seasons that has "More Tribbles, More Troubles" in 1080p from the Animated Series, and while the animation certainly blew up cleanly BOY did it show the seams, almost laughably...

The key special features IMO are the 3 contemporary documentaries (The Making of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back: SPFX, and Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi) which go into how the OT movies were actually made, and since the documentaries were made in 1977-1983 they aren't diluted by any revisionism from Lucas, which is somewhat prevelant in the later documentaries like Empire of Dreams, which produced for the 2004 DVD set.

Here is a small rundown of what discs 7,8 and 9 have on them. To me, Discs 7 and 8 are the real treasures:

* DISC SEVEN – NEW! STAR WARS ARCHIVES: EPISODES I-III
o Including: deleted, extended and alternate scenes; prop, maquette and costume turnarounds; matte paintings and concept art; supplementary interviews with cast and crew; a flythrough of the Lucasfilm Archives and more

* DISC EIGHT – NEW! STAR WARS ARCHIVES: EPISODES IV-VI
o Including: deleted, extended and alternate scenes; prop, maquette and costume turnarounds; matte paintings and concept art; supplementary interviews with cast and crew; and more.

* DISC NINE – THE STAR WARS DOCUMENTARIES
o NEW! Star Warriors (2007, Color, Apx. 84 Minutes) – Some Star Wars fans want to collect action figures…these fans want to be action figures! A tribute to the 501st Legion, a global organization of Star Wars costume enthusiasts, this insightful documentary shows how the super-fan club promotes interest in the films through charity and volunteer work at fundraisers and high-profile special events around the world.

o NEW! A Conversation with the Masters: The Empire Strikes Back 30 Years Later (2010, Color, Apx. 25 Minutes) – George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan and John Williams look back on the making of The Empire Strikes Back in this in-depth retrospective from Lucasfilm created to help commemorate the 30th anniversary of the movie. The masters discuss and reminisce about one of the most beloved films of all time.

o NEW! Star Wars Spoofs (2011, Color, Apx. 91 Minutes) – The farce is strong with this one! Enjoy a hilarious collection of Star Wars spoofs and parodies that have been created over the years, including outrageous clips from Family Guy, The Simpsons, How I Met Your Mother and more — and don’t miss “Weird Al” Yankovic’s one-of-a-kind music video tribute to The Phantom Menace!

o The Making of Star Wars (1977, Color, Apx. 49 Minutes) – Learn the incredible behind-the-scenes story of how the original Star Wars movie was brought to the big screen in this fascinating documentary hosted by C-3PO and R2-D2. Includes interviews with George Lucas and appearances by Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.

o The Empire Strikes Back: SPFX (1980, Color, Apx. 48 Minutes) – Learn the secrets of making movies in a galaxy far, far away. Hosted by Mark Hamill, this revealing documentary offers behind-the-scenes glimpses into the amazing special effects that transformed George Lucas’ vision for Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back into reality!

o Classic Creatures: Return of the Jedi (1983, Color, Apx. 48 Minutes) – Go behind the scenes — and into the costumes — as production footage from Return of the Jedi is interspersed with vintage monster movie clips in this in-depth exploration of the painstaking techniques utilized by George Lucas to create the classic creatures and characters seen in the film. Hosted and narrated by Carrie Fisher and Billie Dee Williams.

o Anatomy of a Dewback (1997, Color, Apx. 26 Minutes) – See how some of the special effects in Star Wars became even more special two decades later! George Lucas explains and demonstrates how his team transformed the original dewback creatures from immovable rubber puppets (in the original 1977 release) to seemingly living, breathing creatures for the Star Wars 1997 Special Edition update.

o Star Wars Tech (2007, Color, Apx. 46 Minutes) – Exploring the technical aspects of Star Wars vehicles, weapons and gadgetry, Star Wars Tech consults leading scientists in the fields of physics, prosthetics, lasers, engineering and astronomy to examine the plausibility of Star Wars technology based on science as we know it today.
