The only true way to judge the picture quality of these movies is in motion,with your own eyes.

Sure screenshots can be a useful guide but they never tell the full story,and can be manipulated either way to prove your own personal opinion.

I will wait until I get my copy of the blu-ray box set on September 16th to reserve judgement on the picture quality on the blu-rays and not base it on screen captures from the net.

In the picture of the emperor, it looks like his right eye is turned out a little. The contact (with a black pupil painted on) has drifted off his eye just a little. You can see his actual iris poking out from the right side of the contact lens.

Sorry, optometry intern. Notice these things. Thought it was amusing

I think people missunderstand the originals? Because most of the action is directed at Luke they seem to think he is the focus of the three movies. The focus of the originals was Darth Vader from the point of view of Luke, how can he redeem his father and bring back the Jedi he was?

that idea isn't even introduced until ROTJ. You might be able to debate at the very end of ESB.

You got it backwards.

If a film has been DNR'ed to death, then it's impossible to find a single great frame in it. On the other hand...

If a film has been carefully mastered, it's always possible to find a shot that's soft from either motion blur, or simple misfocus. Then you can post it on the internets and accuse the film of having been DNR'ed to death.

And if there are any bad reviews, they will be accused of having given in to "radical fanboyism".

The truth is probably the following:

Ep II and III look very good.

Ep I has mostly mild but occasionally severe dnr.

Ep IV and V look good considering they are old transfers, but a new transfer would have helped fine grain.

Ep VI looks mostly good considering the old transfer, but 5 minutes in the middle are filtered.

I find probable truth in everything you posted.
