Those screenshots from avs are great.

Episode I is mystifying, considering it looks like a lot of DNR but has a crap load of detail in the image...it's just....odd.

The problem with most angry internet haters (in general, not just this thread) is that they seem to only deal in absolutes. Something that's not completely perfect must therefore be utter garbage.

Quite a good overview of the set:

The 2011 Star Wars Saga Blu-rays - First Insights

A section from the article:

Quote:
"Regarding the Original Trilogy films, I don't think it's quite accurate to say that these are simply the 2004 DVD masters recycled for Blu-ray. These films are NOT the 2004 versions. It would be more accurate to say that these are new 2011 Blu-ray versions. Let me be clear what I mean by that: It's accurate to say that these are probably built from the same negative scans that were done for the 2004 DVD release, at whatever resolution those were produced. (Note that I'm working to determine the exact resolution of the original digital masters of all the films - the resolution at which the restoration work for Blu-ray was done, and from which the final Blu-rays were mastered.) But I can tell you from first hand observation that many fixes and improvements have been made to these films. So what does that mean?"

For those that collect Star Wars action figures I thought that I'd post what I saw at Meijer this morning.

While grocery shopping I went into the toy aisle and sitting on the shelf was a Star Wars action figure set of about 4 figures in a window box. I think it also came with some sort comic book or something.

At the very top was the words that went something like "Blu-Ray Commemorative Collector's Set"
On the back was small pictures of the other sets, one for each movie (1-6}

DNR doesn't matter, color timing doesn't matter, edge enhancement, compression errors, digital artifacts, all of it is meaningless as long as he can "see it in 1080p".

I really wonder why some people even bother with Blu-ray, since they don't seem to care about a single benefit it offers.

How does her being 30 now, make it cool? She was still only 16 in the picture.

It's true, she looks almost the exact same age in everything except for like, "Leon", "Heat" and "Beautiful Girls". If people were perving on her in Leon, THEN I would pull the pedo card. Haha.

Natalie is total wifey material, she has everything.

It just means that a lot of DNR was applied with a lot of painstaking effort. DNR is most likely localized, and customized on a scene-by-scene basis. TPM reminds me so much of Aliens in that regard. I don't have a problem with it. DNR only becomes a problem when it's applied haphazardly on a wholesale basis. I often see that with budget-conscious Blu-ray transfers.

I usually prefer to keep natural grain in my video and photos. But in the case of TPM, I think scrubbing away the grain might actually be a good thing. The prequels are full of live action scenes with composited CGI elements. Ep2 and Ep3 were shot digitally. For those films, grainless live action scenes merged well with grainless CGI elements.

However, Ep1 was shot on film. The contrast between grainless CGI elements and grainy live action elements would've been jarring. People complain that CGI Yoda and CGI Jar-Jar stick out like sore thumbs in TPM. I think they would stick out even more had the grain been left in.

Was this movie actually filmed over 2 years before it came out?

The new un-official slogan of this forum has gradually become 'if it's better than the DVD in any way, then it's good enough!' followed by sticking their fingers in their ears and screaming 'LALALALALALA' if anyone tries to point out any flaws.

I certainly don't feel as if anyone should be told whether or not to enjoy a release or not - if you like it, you like it. But at the same time, when so many people will accept any middle of the road transfer (I'm not just referring to Star Wars) with a giant smile on their faces, what reason do the studios really have to try harder?

I remember when the first mess of a Gladiator release came out - people were defending it like anyone who saw the blatant issues were insane. If you take issue with technical problems on a disc, you get an eye rolling emoticon and you are labelled 'nitpicker'.

Seeing Mace Windu front and center on that art is almost enough to cancel the pre-order. That is one fix I wouldn't mind from GL, removing Samuel L. Jackson

Anyone seen this Star Wars Blu-ray commercial yet? R2 and 3PO on the loose in a danish electronics store. I believe the same commercial has been used all over europe.
