Please allow me to apologize. In my previous posts I wrote something that I understand offended a few members, and I should have known better.

He says slightly more, so it wasn't added to the question at the time. These Quiz questions were made after the DVDs were available, and Quiz questions like these do not always include ALL cases where the phrase was added -- it makes them trickier, and you need to think a bit harder as to which is the correct answer from what you are given as choices. Kinda like high school! LOL

It is what you said.

I'll make it simple: you don't need to like all 6 films to be a "fan" of Star Wars. You don't even have to like any of the films. You could just like toys, or the books, or the video games. There is no set of stringent requirements to be considered a "fan" of something.

Arbitrary qualifiers don't add anything to this theory.

The way I see the whole saga and its six movies (Clone Wars doesn't count), is like the story of Michael and Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II (told in flashbacks).

SPOILER ALERT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE STAR WARS MOVIES

IV - The best one, specially because it can stand on its own (a stand alone movie like Matrix)

I - The story begins with young Anakin and we meet the Jedi Council and whatnot; you can assume the connection of Anakin and Luke

V - Back to the future with the continuation of the Rebels and the gang, and the revelation of Darth Vader being Anakin Skywalker and thus Luke's father (up to this point, we could've argued that Anakin was NOT Darth Vader)

II - We go back to the past, where we see how Anakin and Padme's relationship actually began

III - We continue with that relationship and how it ended with the death of Padme and Anakin, and Luke, Leia and Darth Vader being born, as well as the fall of the Republic, rise of the Empire, the Rebels being 'born', and the death of the Jedis

VI - So after knowing that Vader is Luke's father and how there 'might be another [hope]", we know what they meant by that (Leia IS Luke's sister), and finally the resolution of Luke as a Jedi, and the death of both Vader and Palpatine.

I know I didn't write a great thesis about my opinions, but I'm at work and don't have the time. Please feel free to contradict it.

Most people don't know or care. And just combing through these posts, you can see that there are people who do know and care... and they like the changes.

Different strokes, I guess. I'd also argue that these changes aren't "even more horrible" than the Han/Greedo edit, the shuttle ride in ESB, adding Hayden to RotJ, etc.

Anyway, the train left the station on changes a long time ago. Either you're OK with version 3.0 or you aren't... most people don't give a shit.

Those Wal-Mart displays take me back!

I was working retail when the DVD set came out - I think it was actually my first day in the Entertainment department. We had 900+ copies of the box set in stock and this MASSIVE 4 sided display that probably held 60-70 copies at a time. I seriously spent the ENTIRE day running to the back for another 4 boxes, coming back out and filling the empty display. By the time I got back with another 4 boxes, the display was empty AGAIN and people were standing there just pulling the copies out of the boxes as I scrambled to fill the damn thing.

Needless to say, we had sold out every single copy by the end of the day. I don't think I ever experienced a rush like that before. Plus, IIRC, SW Battlefront AND NHL 2005 (had to keep those full too) came out on the same day so I was run ragged by the end of my shift.

I think if you're going to go that route you should view the entire PT as a flash back. I don't really see the benefit of viewing I prior to V. I've tried this method of viewing and I really couldn't recommend it to anyone who knows the story and characters. It really takes you out of it. I think in the future I'm going to stick with I-VI.

I just think that if you put I before V, the revelation feels like a bigger twist. Plus, remember that in The Godfather Part II, the flashbacks were intertwined going back and forth.

Again, IMO. (my opinion isn't humble haha)

Interesting point of view.

If you look at the history of cinema, studios/creators always go too far once they have a successful movie. In the end, the diminishing returns demand they stop, or sufficient time has passed that the interest levels to see a new version eradicates how bad the last one was.

Star Wars is a prime example. ROTJ was the weakest by far of the original trilogy. Leave it 16 years and bring out TPM for huge box office only for it to dwindle away again as the film was sub-par (in some peoples view). It was the Star Wars fans from the OT that helped that happen. The PT fans did not exist.

Examples:

The Godfather - 1 & 2 are cinema classics, 3 not
Die Hard - The law of diminshing returns applies until you reach 4 where we hope it stops
Jaws - Franchise cash in that has ended with the atrocious 4
James Bond - So many misses it defies logic including the latest
Alien - 1 & 2 are classics, 3 & 4 best forgotten but again reboot incoming
Spiderman - 1 & 2 great, 3 not, reboot coming
Batman (Burton era) - best not mentioned
Raiders of the lost ark - Wow, returns with KOCS and everyone wished it hadn't
Back to the future - Original is one of the greatest scripts ever written, but then meh
Blade - The original defied belief and sparked the current super hero franchises, 2 & 3 best forgotten
Lethal Weapon - Just wow, and then just well.......
Blues Brothers - Classic followed by made for TV
Ghostbusters - Greatest comedy ever, followed by greatest travesty
Mad Max - Need I say more?

I could go on and please remember these are IMHO. The point I am making is how flawed your statement is. Because I don't like any of the sequels/reboots/prequels of the films above, I cannot like the originals? If the orginals weren't such defining films, the sequels would not exist. Being a Star Wars fan might be restricted for some to just the original film (ANH) and no other, like Die Hard fans or Alien fans or more so, Jaws fans. What comes after does not and will not diminish your love of what came first.

Star Wars is exactly the same. Even in the OT, people wince at ROTJ. Does your argument hold true then that you are not a fan pre-1999 if you did not think ROTJ was much cop?

The prequel trilogy was demanded by the public, but more so from toy manufacturers and accountants. They are good films, but in the Godfather 3 mould, they are compared against outstanding films, and that is why they receive such derision, not only from FANS, but critics alike.

When the benchmark is set so high, rarely do sequels/prequels achieve the level again. You can count them on one hand. It makes you no less of a James Bond fan if you think View to a kill was a goofball mess, it makes you no less of a fan of the original if you think Alien 4 should never be broadcast again.....anywhere, it makes you no less of a fan of Jaws if you laugh for a full 90 minutes at Jaws the revenge etc etc etc.

Clearly you are passionate about the Star Wars of your generation as we are about the Star Wars of our generation. We are both fans from a different perspective, and treasure the films we grew up with above all others.

My Father loves Dr No, I love Casino Royale. We are BOTH fans. You love the PT, I love the OT, we are still BOTH fans.

The problem with this is, the end of Episode I, we hear the Imperial March/Darth Vader theme when Obi-Wan and Yoda are discussing Anakin's tumultuous future. So, if you watch Empire after it, you are already clued in to Anakin being Darth Vader. Watching it in this order, though, reminds me of watching LOST. Very tempting, but still, some problems with it.

Can anyone help me out here...

A long time ago (in a galaxy... ) I read a post somewhere on this forum about Star Wars. It wasn't even in this thread, and was well before the Blus were announced.

This person had an interesting take/opinion that I had never read before:

It had to do with the conversation between Anakin and Palpatine in the 'opera' in Episode III and Darth Tyranus (-I know, probably wrong). I think it might have had some type of significance with Darth T and Anakin not having a father. It was a very long time ago that I read this, though.

Can anyone expand on thoughts/theories or point me in the direction of that post? I just remember thinking it was really interesting.

I'd love to read it again before I watch the Blus.

I don't watch them in any order because I rarely have 12+ hours to watch movies back to back to back to ... where was I?

I'll watch TPM with my daughter next Friday. Then throughout the weekend I'm sure we'll watch ANH, ESB, and ROTJ, in whichever order she prefers. It'll take us weeks to get to AOTC, and she isn't allowed to watch ROTS (much to her dismay).
