not entirely true. Incessant complaining got the unaltered OT released after the SE's

we'll win, eventually. George knows there's more money to be made giving us what we want as opposed to what he'll spend restoring them. It will happen. Some day.

And sales were for the most part disappointing. Which caused the cancellation of a planned re-release when the Clone Wars movie came out. So yeah, incessant complaining got you that. But sales didn't match all the whiniing and moaning that came before. So clearly Lucas is correct, from a certain point of view.

And as you say, it may very well happen someday. Enjoy getting LD Encodes on Blu-Ray.

  1. The UOT's on DVD were just half-arsed non-anamorphic ports of the laserdiscs, so those who really wanted them weren't getting what they actually wanted.
  2. The re-release was never properly promoted.
  3. Those DVDs were released hard on the heels on the first DVD box set. So most of the people who might have been inclined to buy them, had recently purchased trilogy on DVD and wouldn't be inclined to get them again.
In other words, the release of the UOT was practically a recipe for disappointing sales. At least Lucas could say, "I gave them what they wanted and no one bought it. I guess there wasn't any demand for it after all."

I wonder if that was his plan all along (and the sad thing is that would paranoid if I was talking about any other filmmaker).

Yes, release a product which most fans know is shoddy as crap, and then say there is no interest when it has poor sales.

Very disingenuous of anyone who uses that argument.

Unfortunately no his dead didn't explode. Opinions can be wrong unless they're proven by facts, Beast just happens to be wrong more often than not.

There's a difference between trying to state something as fact and then calling it an opinion and an actual opinion.

Funny, they happily purchased those encodes as bootlegs for years.

Other than the numerous ads, press releases, commercials, and store displays.
Yeah, they really hit the market with no word at all about them coming out. Heh.

Not really. The release was 2+ years later. Way longer than say... the Extended Cut release of the LotR films. Or a great deal of other extended cuts of other movies. Plus it was the first time the films were available seperately on DVD, rather than the 4-Disc or 3-Disc boxsets. So should have sold fairly well.

Or it clearly indicated that the majority of people didn't care what version of the films they own.

While not perfect, I do appreciate the fact that the original trilogy was released on DVD, even if it was a Laser Disc transfer. As a result I don't have to download it, deal with a Laser Disc, and I can finally retire my VHS copy. Because it is still better than the VHS copy from 1996.

Why do the percentages in the poll add up to more than 100%?

Apples and oranges. The LOTR extended versions were announced at the same time as the theatrical and explicitly targeted at different audiences. When the theatricals came out, I already knew the extended versions were on the way so I could, if I had wanted, kept my wallet in my pocket until the EE came out.

The interval between the box set and the individual releases isn't all that relevant. The relevant fact is that everyone who wanted the trilogy already had it on DVD. About the only people who might buy the individual releases were those who hated Ewoks so much that they would rather catch Ebola than buy ROTJ.

Those who wanted the UOT already knew they were getting screwed so they didn't bother.

All the "disappointing" sales might have proved is that there was no demand for a half-arsed, low-quality release of the UOT.

Do a proper restoration, make ANH look as good as it did that day at the Big Newport in 1977, and my credit card will leave my wallet in hyperdrive. I'm confident that I am not alone in that regard.

Because it was a multi-choice poll. You could select more than one option.

P.S. Anxious to check out that new Luke/R2 deleted scene from ROTJ. Sort of glad they cut it, though. I like that his introduction is the way it is now.

PLEASE NOTE: This is merely my opinion. I cannot back it up with irrefutable proof.

true. I had already paid for the SE's in 2004. When the re-releases came out packaged with UOT's, I was still hesitant on buying them simply because they came packaged with the same product I just paid for. Then when I heard they were nothing but LD ports, that finalized my decision.

Yeah, that and the execution is near impossible to get anywhere but awkward.
